Bayesian tragedy over reported

sadabouti · 23/08/2024 16:59

AIBU to think that this tragedy is being vastly over reported simply because it involved very rich people? Why did it require live coverage or the effort to recover bodies on major news channels.

It's newsworthy because it involves well known/ successful British people, it's an unusual event and there was an ongoing rescue effort and now the mystery of why it sank. Plus August is a slow news month.

It has all the features of a long running news story - human interest - rich successful people, a mystery, tragedy It also has technical interest - the rescue effort, details the boat.

Migrant boat sinkings are reported but there is no mystery - everyone knows why the boats sink and by their very nature these oats are undocumented and unknown - so the names and stories of the people impacted cannot reported on in the first few news cycles.

I think there’s also the hint of a conspiracy theory here because of Mike Lynch’s background and the fact his codefendent in the Autonomy trial was killed in mysterious circumstances a couple of days before. And the fact he was well connected with the security services.

Its very strange indeed. I am not a conspiracy theorist but I can see why it makes people wonder if there was more to this than meets the eye.

Plus the human tragedy and the freak weather. I can see why it’s a huge story.

I agree op. But this odd part of the story, the death of Mike Lynch’s co-defendant a few days before - which I think takes this from tragedy for the families to something else - is hardly mentioned.

Having said all that I did weep at the tributes to Hannah yesterday. So so sad for her family. I keep thinking of her mom and sister and their Awful loss.

See also Tommy and Molly Mae ‘break up’ as ‘breaking news’.

This is a terrible tragedy and I have every sympathy for the families but I’m not sure the rolling coverage, including photographs of bodies being lifted into rescue boats and body bags being transferred over at the port is necessary.

It’s already given legs to wild conspiracy theories which people seem to get a real kick from. See also Jay Slater.

I’d love it if people were as invested in news coverage about the numbers of people suffering and dying because of worsening cancer waiting times but sadly that doesn’t generate as msny clicks.

sadabouti · 24/08/2024 08:19

Just to be clear again. It's obviously a tragedy. My question was whether others thought it was being over reported. I agree with the posters pointing out that August is a slow news month, and perhaps there is an ease to reporting this to fill space and time on 24 hour news channels. I suppose it's a summer story, given that it's about a tragedy on holiday, like Jay Slater. Though in that case it was a missing persons case first (on land, which is obvs more survivable than being lost at sea).

I still think Bayesian is over reported. But have no strong feelings on it after that. Bad weather, crew mistakes, boat sank, sadly guests died (including a colourful tech entrepreneur, his lawyer and banker), but some survived, including a baby thankfully. Investigation may provide more detail of why it happened in due course. That's the story, the rest is navel gazing and speculation because of the money angle.

For those asking if I'm jealous. No I'm not jealous of people who have drowned in a ship wreck. I feel sorry for them and sad for their families.

You seem to totally miss the point. Aside from the fact that kids opening exam results coverage took half a day, and most new stories come and go. This one seemed like 24/h coverage with reporters filming bodies being brought to the shore, the same footage being shown over and over, literally no new stuff, just basking in the tragedy and repeating the same phrases- all while OTHER stuff going on around the world was totally ommited.
Similarly to the Titanic submarine, people obsessed over every detail of it hundred times over.

Honestly that’s such a rude comment. Demanding someone ‘seek therapy’. I’m rarely offended but I find that offensive.

How rude you are.
My point is, if this yacht was chartered/owned by a BAME family or a group from a council estate, you would not mention this in your post. It would not read 'is this over reported just because they passengers were black/insert whatever descriptor'
No, you wouldn't, you were just having a pop at rich people.

kerstina · 24/08/2024 08:53

Not true . Jay Slater anybody?

LostittoBostik · 24/08/2024 08:56

sadabouti · 23/08/2024 17:10

So I'm not disputing that it's a tragedy. I'm just asking if it is being over reported by the media. It's been wall to wall coverage. And I can't help but think that the only distinguishing factor is that it involved rich people on an expensive boat.

No the distinguishing factor was the fact that - partly because they were rich - it shouldn't have sunk.

Freak weather, yacht staff potentially failing in their duties, a possible legal case

All human interest factors, plus it's August so there's very little politics/other core news going on.

OlympicGoldfish · 24/08/2024 08:57

The tributes to Hannah were heartbreaking.

The survivors may be embroiled in lengthy processes to try and make sense of this, whether manufacturing, human error, or freak accident. Given they were celebrating leaving ten years of that uncertainty behind, those are more dark days ahead.

I’d only heard of ML in the context of there being two with the same name in the public eye (the other is the Trade Union man). Whatever I think of wealth and the rich, this is one of those times when you shake off your prejudices and feel at a very human and humbling level for those who went and those left behind.

Re migrants, there was a lot of coverage about the baby washed ashore, in the early days. Then mood changed, tragedies became more frequent.

Ginmonkeyagain · 24/08/2024 09:03

@FinalInstructionstotheAudience Indeed, if Beyonce and Jay Z went missing on a capsized super yacht while on holiday it would be headline news for weeks. It is wealth plusfl fame plus human interest plus mystery that makes it newsworthy not race.

sadabouti · 24/08/2024 09:07

Yes, I was being rude to @FinalInstructionstotheAudience, deliberately so, as he/she was being rude to me. Rudeness is almost always unwarranted, but if you can't take it, don't start it. And don't seek the moral high ground. I'm quite happy to scrap in the gutter if someone goes for me first, but you won't see me starting it. That's the difference.

The point was, @sadabouti mentioned the media attention in the context of the people om board being rich, intimating that this was the reason there was so much news coverage. S/he was just having a pop at the wealthy, because as I said in a previous post, if thexpeople were anything but rich, the OP would not have started the thread because there would be nothing to nail his/her colours to

Throughout your entire post. Rude, aggressive, sarcastic, snippy. All of the above. It was a horrible post.

sadabouti · 24/08/2024 09:15

@FinalInstructionstotheAudience you started with childish sarcasm and then said that my opinions are selfish and arrogant. Your entire post was an ad hom attack. It's first thing in the morning, I was pre-caffeine, so I bit back. That's the internet for you.

Wss ^^^

sadabouti · 24/08/2024 09:20

Given that @FinalInstructionstotheAudience is such a deep thinker and able to discern my political leanings from a few posts about a news story, perhaps it's worth saying that I have nothing but admiration for Mr Lynch and his business achievements, and imagine the last 12 years had been horrid for him restoring his reputation after the sale of autonomy to HP. He earns his money and was entitled to enjoy it, and created wealth and opportunity for many people in Silicon Fen.

My original point was that the 24 hr coverage of salvage operations and body retrieval was a bit much. And that it was driven by the fact of Mr Lynch's (earned wealth).

So well done @FinalInstructionstotheAudience as I've danced to your tune and explained my elf. Now bugger off please.

So, no, I won't bugger off because you demand it

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 24/08/2024 09:24

I think the board T&Cs need a reread.
