AIBU to wear secondhand knickers?

RedVelvetGazpacho · 20/08/2024 15:12

Obviously only after washing them for a long time at a high temperature. They don't have any stains on them.

YABU - yes, that's disgusting, put them in textile recycling and go to M&S
YANBU - no, they're no different from any other secondhand clothes

Sorry gross knickers are cheap enough to buy,

GivingitToGod · 20/08/2024 19:15

KreedKafer · 20/08/2024 15:16

There's no rational reason why this wouldn't be OK.

I still wouldn't, personally, but that's purely irrational on my part. Hygiene-wise, if they've been washed at a high temperature, there's no actual risk.

I agree with this. Am unsure why anyone would choose second-hand knickers over new ones when you can buy them so cheaply.
With second hand clothes, it's different but knickers?????

Sfxde24 · 20/08/2024 19:21

Interesting. Wouldn’t give it a second thought. Washed knickers 🤷‍♀️
Am sure banisters and door knobs are more ‘gross’.

EddyF · 20/08/2024 19:23

What kind of debate is this? Like why would you wear worn knickers from a stranger/family washed or otherwise? Just nasty. Silly thread.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 20/08/2024 19:23

Nope- but wouldn’t care of someone else did. Where do you get second hand pants? I didn’t think charities etc accepted them.

Straightouttachelmsford · 20/08/2024 19:24

Whilst I wouldn't buy used pants, I did buy cycling tights preloved and they're usually worn commando...

I didn't think I would but they looked ok, smelt ok and I washed them twice. I've lived..

dottiedodah · 20/08/2024 19:24

There is advice online about sterlizing pants in Milton or similar. I would not do it though.pants are cheapness chips.i did have a swimming cossie my friend gave me but wouldn't like to have one from a stranger.

Where did you even get second hand knickers from? Pretty sure nowhere would sell them! You can buy a 5 pack for £10 ffs.

Rudey crudey websites that sell pants for sniffers 🤷🏻‍♀️

and ebay people sells their deliberately well worn 😉 but never worn. Panties there too.

But legit worn not in a dirty way pants god knows.

TotesDelulu · 20/08/2024 19:41

I always thought nobody would ever buy second hand pants to actually wear, but I'm on a couple of FB groups for makers of handmade underwear and people do both sell and buy them "preloved". Not my bag but I think they're all quite crunchy eco friendly types and the underwear is ££ new, so I can see why there's a market.

BeSpoonyAquaHare · 20/08/2024 19:43

I love second hand but it’s a hard no from me. It costs next to nothing to buy new and I don’t have to wonder whose vag sweat has been seeping into the fabric for the last couple of years.

Pastafortea · 20/08/2024 19:46

Why oh why would you do that?

I started a thread on recommended gym wear recently and several posters advised me to buy second hand and I would never do that either.

TinkerTiger · 20/08/2024 19:47

Looking for stories about used knickers, OP?

When I started secondary school about a hundred years ago, part of the uniform was regulation knickers in the school colour, a delightful bottle green.

My mother was given a load of second hand uniform for me by a friend, including a few pairs of these enormous green knickers. I didn't mind the shirts or skirts, but the knickers were a definite NO. Eeewww!!!

A few weeks into term, we first years realised that none of the older girls wore the regulation knickers anyway.

Same. Wasn't a school in a row E beginning with S ?

They were horrid. Think we had to wear them on pe days

Judellie · 20/08/2024 19:56

Only some of my mum's Sloggis after she died. I wouldn't wear anyone else's old knickers.

CableCar · 20/08/2024 19:59

Minority here, but yes! I bought preloved cloth nappies for my baby, which is no different (or worse arguably, as they get soiled?!) and since that went successfully with my DC, I now happily buy second hand swimwear. I don't think I've ever seen second hand knickers for sale, but I don't think anyone ibu to buy them if they want to!

ItsTheGAGGGGGGGG · 20/08/2024 21:08

A pack of knickers is like 8 quid

Branleuse · 20/08/2024 21:12

I dont really care. Ive bought loads of second hand swimwear, and i am sure ive bought underwear sets second hand before.

gentileschi · 20/08/2024 21:27

I've donated extremely expensive sets and wondered about this. Bras weren't probably going to fit again (pregnancy) and I added in the matching pristine pants £300+ a set, I hope someone loved a divine bargain but I've never been sure.

TotesDelulu · 21/08/2024 08:18

The whole thing about a pack of knickers being only a fiver or whatever is a bit grim too though really, when you think about it.

I mean, who is making them for that little money? What conditions are they working under?

Beezknees · 21/08/2024 08:21

No.

I'm fairly frugal with clothing but knickers and socks are cheap enough to buy new so there's no reason to want to wear second hand (unless you are in dire poverty).

anyolddinosaur · 21/08/2024 08:35

You are not being at all unreasonable, so I voted accordingly - but I wouldnt do it myself.

I dont like to think of the recycled water I drink ......

PaulaTrilloe · 21/08/2024 08:44

Ooh it would be like being in prison with communal clothes

Gives me the major ick!

@Mudflaps you might ahem be able to sell your nice sets there's probably a Pervy after market on eBay/ Gumtree

I managed to sell old worn (clean!) tights once.

StoatofDisarray · 21/08/2024 09:19

YANBU - wouldn't bother me. But then I did grow up dirt poor in the 70s.

Claire903 · 21/08/2024 09:19

Couldn't do it, wouldn't do it
