AIBU to wear secondhand knickers?

RedVelvetGazpacho · 20/08/2024 15:12

Obviously only after washing them for a long time at a high temperature. They don't have any stains on them.

YABU - yes, that's disgusting, put them in textile recycling and go to M&S
YANBU - no, they're no different from any other secondhand clothes

It's fine. There is no reason not to. I wouldn't want to myself but that is because I'm silly. My kids used second hand sleep suits and body suits as babies and I'm sure they would have seen worse than any adult underwear so it would be hypocritical of me to.say that it's not ok for adults.

Mudflaps · 20/08/2024 15:42

I wish someone would use second hand underwear as I have bags of really nice sets in my attic, all clean and in excellent condition and I do t want to dump but I'll never fit into them again.

There is a charity called Smalls for All.

I see they accept gently worn bras.

BarnacleBeasley · 20/08/2024 15:47

I personally wouldn't, but clearly I am a total hypocrite as I've put hand-me-down pants on my toilet training toddler.

DramaAlpaca · 20/08/2024 15:48

When I started secondary school about a hundred years ago, part of the uniform was regulation knickers in the school colour, a delightful bottle green.

My mother was given a load of second hand uniform for me by a friend, including a few pairs of these enormous green knickers. I didn't mind the shirts or skirts, but the knickers were a definite NO. Eeewww!!!

A few weeks into term, we first years realised that none of the older girls wore the regulation knickers anyway.

See my children don’t hand down pants either or bras/crop tops. Or swimwear actually lol

2dogsandabudgie · 20/08/2024 15:49

I didn't think charity shops sold secondhand bras and knickers now, because of hygiene reasons.

namechangetheworld · 20/08/2024 15:49

Wouldn't particularly bother me, no, not after a thorough wash. Honestly, after working in the food industry, eating out in a restaurant is FAR more of a concern than something like this - you have absolutely no idea who has been touching your food or what they could have done to it. At least you can wash used knickers!

MerelyPlaying · 20/08/2024 15:50

I buy all my clothes secondhand on principle, but I draw the line at underwear - however, there’s absolutely no logic to that, I agree. As someone else said, I’d happily borrow a pair from my sister or even from a friend if I was desperate for some reason. So if you can do it, go for it.

I wear mine until they go into holes, so I don’t often buy new ones; there are good ethical reasons not to buy £1 knickers from Primark though.

WitchyBits · 20/08/2024 15:55

I've worn my sisters kickers ( clean obviously) in an emergency but no I don't think I could wear second hand knickers. I wouldn't but a second hand sex toy either.

Conniebygaslight · 20/08/2024 15:58

No, but then I would buy a used bikini which is the same thing. Most of us wouldn’t buy a used mattress or toilet seat either but would happily use a toilet and bed in a hotel that have been laid/sat on by hundreds if not thousands….
🤷🏼‍♀️🤷🏼‍♀️

MavisPennies · 20/08/2024 16:00

I'd say do it if you want to, but don't tell anyone!

Personally there's a limit for me in trying to be eco and that's it!!

OrangeJeans · 20/08/2024 16:01

I wouldn't be giving OP kicks from this.

Cantgetyououttamyhead · 20/08/2024 16:02

No.

People buy and sell swimwear all the time and they seem to sell okay as I have seen a lot on 2nd hand sites. So I'm not sure why bikinis get the nod and underwear doesn't. Bra's seem to sell as well.

I've never bought nor sold 2nd hand underwear myself though, mine wouldn't be fit for use as I wear them until they are worn out.

See, this is interesting because to me, second-hand swimwear is absolutely the same as second-hand knickers, and there's no way I'd buy/wear it! I also wouldn't wear second-hand pyjamas or nighties.

As I said in my previous post, I'm aware that's completely irrational, though. I don't think there's any actual hygiene issue. The thought of it just makes me cringe for some reason. Too intimate!

Delphiniumandlupins · 20/08/2024 16:05

I wouldn't unless in an emergency, and my standards are pretty low. I've bought the wrong size previously and given away the rest of the pack but only the unworn pairs.

LizTruss · 20/08/2024 16:05

It's a definite no from me! Not after last time.

I had collected up all the discarded knickers after Conference. Took them home and thought the best way of giving them a thorough washing was with the Karcher jet-wash in the garden.

Well bugger me if they didn't get whooshed over the fence into the neighbours garden!
I was too embarrassed to go round and ask for my knickers back. In fact I can see a couple of pairs are still adorning their plum tree. 😵‍💫😆

CountessWindyBottom · 20/08/2024 16:06

There are not enough V's to really express how much YABVU.

If times are really that tough I'd urge you to go commando.

socks1107 · 20/08/2024 16:07

No I wouldn't

sweeneytoddsrazor · 20/08/2024 16:09

I wouldn't personally but just recently where I work the swimwear has stopped coming in with the plastic hygiene strips on and are refundable so now not sure I want to buy swimwear

I assure you, the only kicks I'm getting are from watching the poll numbers go up. But this is the internet, soooooo

SummerSplashing · 20/08/2024 16:16

Do, let's see if MNHQ would wear them.

Dozycuntlaters · 20/08/2024 16:18

Jesus no, thats so rank.

Tesco and Primark etc do cheap undies, the thought of wearing second hand ones is just ick.

Happiestwhen · 20/08/2024 16:20

No sorry I wouldn't. Someone's minge and butt has been sitting on them , I couldn't get past that sorry 😆

PinkyFlamingo · 20/08/2024 16:22

Nope. Why would you need to?
