AIBU to wear secondhand knickers?

RedVelvetGazpacho · 20/08/2024 15:12

Obviously only after washing them for a long time at a high temperature. They don't have any stains on them.

YABU - yes, that's disgusting, put them in textile recycling and go to M&S
YANBU - no, they're no different from any other secondhand clothes

Why would you?
I wonder why anyone would recycle their knickers… surely they’re at a point when they aren’t wearable?! They’re not expensive enough for me to put myself through the ick!

Wishimaywishimight · 20/08/2024 16:23

Not in a million years - gross!

Dozycuntlaters · 20/08/2024 16:18

Jesus no, thats so rank.

Tesco and Primark etc do cheap undies, the thought of wearing second hand ones is just ick.

Why rank??? A rather hyperbolic reaction.
If they’ve been thoroughly cleaned then there really is no logical reason why not.
I’d happily borrow from family and friends. I’ve not needed to buy second hand so I’ve never been tested but I think I would if I needed to.
PP makes a good point about swimwear and I’d share that after a wash.
It just seems so wasteful and a real first world privilege to be so irrational about it.

jolota · 20/08/2024 16:27

I buy almost all my clothes second hand but I wouldn't choose to wear second hand underwear

eggandchip · 20/08/2024 16:28

Yes i have boiling wash all good.
I had no choice at the time skint as fuck.
I do now buy new but if im in a charity shop and they are still in the packet why not still give them a good boiling wash good to go.
Second hand bras wash and wear.

VioletladyGrantham · 20/08/2024 16:32

Ewwww!🤮

Autumnismyfavouritetimeofyear · 20/08/2024 16:33

Those and shoes are a no no for me.

Hadjab · 20/08/2024 16:48

I'd wear my mum's knickers or my sisters' or my very best friend who I've known for forty years. Outside of that? Nope!

PrimitivePerson · 20/08/2024 17:05

All the people acting like it's disgusting - have you never heard of washing machines?

Normallynumb · 20/08/2024 17:12

I buy most of my clothes from Vinted and although there's nothing wrong wearing them if they're really well washed I would feel them too intimate, not sure why though.

Ribenaberry12 · 20/08/2024 17:15

I was going to say no but then I’ve bought swim wear off Vinted and worn it and I guess really there’s no difference!

Custardandrhubarbcrumble · 20/08/2024 17:18

It's basically impossible to buy it as nowhere will let you sell it so I never have apart from a couple of pairs of my mum's she gave me when I was pregnant. My kids have had second hand though, they grow so fast and I can't see an issue with it. Peopke gave me bundles of clothes with pants in it. As above it's no different from swimwear. Nurseries and schools always keep a stock in case of accidents. There's also an excellent trade in second hand cloth nappies so it makes no sense to me why you can't buy, sell or even donate used underwear.

The donating is particularly annoying. We read about how in certain countries, wearing underwear can protect girls against rape. And yet charities that collect clothing for these countries won't let you donate clean, barely used knickers. Ridiculous. I know what I'd pick if I had a choice between no knickers and clean used ones.

Daffyyellow · 20/08/2024 17:31

Logically they should be fine after a hot wash.
Morally it would be a good thing.
Actually, I couldn’t!

TheFormidableMrsC · 20/08/2024 18:12

The only time I can see second hand pants as acceptable is when I donated a load of decent ones of DS's to nursery for when they need them for accidents. Otherwise, absolutely not. I am a big fan of charity shops and second hand clothing but I draw the line at smalls.

Second hand bras wash and wear.

In a packet is different. I don't think that's what OP is referring to.

FieldInWhichFucksAreGrownIsBarren · 20/08/2024 18:14

2nd hand can be fabulous, for underwear though it's a no from me. Just the thought makes me feel a bit ick.

mugglewump · 20/08/2024 18:16

Why not, if you like them? I've bought second-hand, worn once bras, second-hand swimwear and I've bought second hand trainers that can go in the washing machine. When we are old and decrepid, the nursing home will probably put us in each others' underwear, so best lose the ick now!

Misthios · 20/08/2024 18:18

My wardrobe is almost exclusively second hand but I do buy new underwear. I wear knickers/bras/vests until they are absolutely falling to bits though, hate wastefulness.

StanLeeCameo · 20/08/2024 18:19

I haven't, but I have worn pre-loved swimwear, so it's the same, really. I don't see an issue, once its all washed.

LuckysDadsHat · 20/08/2024 18:23

I have 2 rules no used underwear and no used mattresses in my home. I know the mattresses is bonkers as when we go on holiday it is a used mattress but I just couldn't have it in my own home. And knickers, nope 🤮🤮

ginasevern · 20/08/2024 18:38

It's completely irrational but no, I really wouldn't want to. However, I don't have to as I can afford new ones. If I was really that skint then the answer would be yes.

MrsSunshine2b · 20/08/2024 18:41

Where did you even get second hand knickers from? Pretty sure nowhere would sell them! You can buy a 5 pack for £10 ffs.

ChristmasFluff · 20/08/2024 19:04

I've done it in the past. Poverty has a miraculous way of curing the ick.

SummerSplashing · 20/08/2024 19:09

PrimitivePerson · 20/08/2024 17:05

@PrimitivePerson

no, do tell us more... they sound handy. I'm getting a bit fed up of schlepping down to the river with my rock!

TrishM80 · 20/08/2024 19:10

Mycatisashit · 20/08/2024 15:27

I wouldn’t.

When I’m processing returns at work I hate re packing underwear. I had no idea people could return undies to a shop until I started working at one!

Thought underwear was non returnable for hygiene reasons?!
