Family wedding next year.. seen this dress online that I love....

Would I be unreasonable to think this is ok for a wedding guest? Or is it too bridesmaidy?

I think it's lovely. Not bridesmaidy at all or attention seeking. Weddings are supposed to be a happy occasion, a celebration of love. I don't know why people have such a problem with a bright colour. I went to a wedding recently and wore lime green. There were quite a lot of people who looked like they'd just rolled out of bed and put on the first thing in their wardrobe. A lot looked like the were just going to a BBQ or for a pub lunch.

It's gorgeous! I'd go for it!

BluebellsareBlue · 19/08/2024 10:45

@BrandNewHeretic I know!!! Absolutely unbelievable!! In fact it's shocking, especially the comment regarding attention seeking, that's heading all the way back to r*pe and blaming the woman's choice of attire.

It's really really bad. I can only think that these posters actually do want people to not have any self esteem. If I was younger and had the figure for this (and not have massive boobs that need a bra) then I'd be wearing the hell out of that dress!!

Then you'll get:

"Hmmm, not sure I'd personally show so much ankle- what if the bride's ankles arent that great? wouldnt want to draw attention to my slender beautiful ankles, might make the bride feel shit about herself on "her" day- have some thought for others"

😆

To be honest, I was thinking moreso the elbows. People might think the guest has been so disrespectful towards the brides elbows if they wore my suggestion 🤣

BrendaSmall · 19/08/2024 10:47

May be ok for a wedding abroad where you’re guaranteed the hot weather, not sure about in the uk though as it’s not a dress that’s suitable to be worn with anything over it

lavendermoonx · 19/08/2024 10:47

It’s beautiful and perfect for a wedding - the back is stunning!

I’m always confused by the ‘too much’ comments because where I’m from (Glasgowish), guests are expected to turn up dressed to impress. I wouldn’t wear most of the wedding guest dresses recommended on mumsnet to do the messages never mind a wedding.

Can you ask the bride / a bridesmaid? Get their take on it.

BluebellsareBlue · 19/08/2024 10:49

Bollox Brenda! Fire a wrap over the dress if it's cold.

I'd be going all out with this and going for a lime green wrap, shoes and bag (pink and green should never be seen my ass).

There is a lot of opportunity to stand out in a beautiful way with a contrasting colour of accessories

Yes it would be fine for a beach wedding, and yes the shoulder shape means it would be difficult to wear anything over it, and a short shrug would look silly with those back straps anyway.

Sweetteaplease · 19/08/2024 10:50

Ita lovely, as long as it's not the same colour as the bridesmaids

True- elbow jealousy can ruin a person 😆

OP- wear the dress- its gorgeous!

LookItsMeAgain · 19/08/2024 10:52

I'm LOL-ing at the part if you scroll down and it says "Goes well with". Usually you might see a handbag or shoes or even a hair fascinator but this one has nipple covers! I'm sorry but that tickled me this morning 😆

It's usually even more entertaining when posters start showing you suggestions instead of the one you've asked about, like this... (totally opposite to what you've shown).

Maybe we start the opposite and suggest worse dresses 🤣

It's gorgeous. I think whether it's acceptable for you to wear is entirely down to a few things including.... and I hate to say this, but your age.

I've not read the full post, so not sure if your age or any other of the below factors have been mentioned but I would say the dress is acceptable if

a) you're younger than 30 and the majority of the guests will be as well. You'd also need to consider how the dress looks on YOU - not the model. Two different people can wear the same dress and have drastically different looks when it's on. Different body shapes, accessories, even hair styles etc can make a dress look trashy or classy. Some people may not agree, but it happens.

b) often friend groups share similar taste in style and also what is acceptable. Chances are if you're considering wearing something like that others may be too. Do you know any other guests you could consult outfits with?

c) the venue, while this would be perfectly acceptable for a destination wedding in Italy, it wouldn't really be a great option for a rustic barn venue in the U.K.

Oh but you can't point out that trying to police women's clothing is bordering on victim blaming and the "well dressed like that. She was asking for it really". Because that's just your internal misogyny showing.

BusyMum47 · 19/08/2024 10:57

@Shiningstarr

Wow! That's stunning! If you can carry that off, then bloody good for you - go for it! (As long as its not the bridesmaid colour!) I'd possibly add a pretty shawl for the day, unless it's boiling hot weather.

KimberleyClark · 19/08/2024 10:56

Except no one has done this on this thread.

Missing the joke there but ok

GreenPoppy · 19/08/2024 10:58

That's a beautiful dress. It probably depends on where in the country the wedding is / your family is from as to whether showing so much back is normal at a wedding.

Prawncow · 19/08/2024 10:59

When you try it on, get a picture of the back when you’re sitting down. The back needs to be tight enough to keep the front in place, so I’d want to make sure it didn’t make my back look like a Sunday roast.

TruJay · 19/08/2024 11:00

I think it’s stunning and assume you would look stunning in it which is why I presume you’re getting the shitty comments. Don’t choose something you look crap in to appease others.

Dh’s family dressed like tramps for our wedding (they didn’t agree with us being together) and I was actually shocked when I turned up and saw them all. Surely any couple want their guests to look amazing, I did!
I always make an effort for my friends weddings, buy a new outfit specifically for the occasion, it’s an opportunity to dress up and look your best as opposed to my usual jeans and a t shirt daily look while chasing my toddler around! I love a wedding and getting all dressed up, it’s part of the fun of the day.

Buy the dress OP

I'm dundee and exactly the same opinion!!

I asked about a dress for a wedding last year and was told I'd be mistaken for a bridesmaid (of which there were none).

The dress was complimented so many times and even staff asked where I got it, I only asked on here as I'm booby and wanted suggestions on how to make it less so. You should have read some of the comments, inappropriate for a wedding etc. then some fellow Scots appeared MF tried to explain how we dress to impress at weddings!!

They would have had a fit if they had seen the dress I wore to a wedding last month! 😂 looks silky like a nighty and way too bridesmaidy lol!!
