This has just appeared in my news feed and I feel so upset and disillusioned. I was a labour voter, thinking we voted the bad guys out but I'm now really scared about what we've let in...what on earth have we done...? https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/08/17/education-secretary-bridget-phillipson-private-school-tax-r/

Have you ever heard of people having complex views? I know the Left LOVE to put people in boxes, and can't cope when someone doesn't fit into their neat little categories, but it is actually possible to like and dislike parties for numerous different reasons. Just because someone is criticisng Labour doesn't mean they're a whinging Tory-apologist.

Thank you. I'm not a Tory but I am very very very upset at this... I don't want this. I want a country where we are free to question, express our objections and where democratically elected cabinet ministers have a duty to respond and engage with those who elected them. It's not about which side you are on. It's about democracy, respect and freedom. Anyone who says "this is how it is, you are stupid and should just accept it". I don't. The same way people didn't accept communism, racism or misogyny. I find it disturbing

I will post some if I can.

I don't believe a single one of you voted Labour.

Sure of it!

Shrekmate · 17/08/2024 22:02

Man alive…

  1. This isn’t about censorship. If the government were censoring these things, how come we’re all merrily discussing it on Mumsnet?

  2. There won’t be a snap general election. Labour won a thumping majority six weeks ago. Not only was that barely any time ago, but they’ve not actually passed a single law yet. Who do you think is going to be arranging this snap election, and given that the guys who won the last one the other day haven’t had the chance to do anything good or bad yet, why do you think the result would be different?

  3. VAT on school fees needn’t cost parents a penny more. If you pay £20,000pa in fees, VAT will mean you pay £24,000. Rather than complain about the democratically elected government implementing a policy that was front and centre in their manifesto, why not get your school to cut its fees from £20,000 to £16,000pa? Add VAT to that and you’re quids in. State schools have had to absorb budget cuts, so maybe your private schools could do the same?

"We’re moving away from hate, division and culture wars..."

You mean, the side of the "culture wars" that you disagree with?

Well clearly not 😂

It is not a common practice in a democratic world

Did I miss the revolution/volte face where Zuckerberg turned FB into a democracy, UK or otherwise?

No I didn't so instead of wasting time whining on a SM forum mediated by foreign tech bros, how about contacting her direct through her office/via your MP? The methods actually under the control of the UK democracy.

Of course that doesn't offer the public performance aspect or the opportunity to add a photo of your lunch but it is more likely to achieve a response to a serious question.

But there is an official process for that, it’s writing to your mp.

...doesn't mean they're a whinging Tory-apologist.

But I'll bet a good many of them are. Also, I'm not "of the Left", and I didn't vote Labour, so I don't fit into your "neat little category" 🤣🤣🤣

TheNuthatch · 17/08/2024 22:05

I completely agree with you op.

It smacks of incompetence when a minister behaves like this. She's sticking her fingers in her ears ffs.
If they have confidence in their policy they should own it!

AInightingale · 17/08/2024 22:06

In a few weeks, they've already managed to upset most pensioners and thousands of working-class people, who now feel effectively silenced when it comes to questioning or protesting large-scale immigration. The dispersal of up to 70,000 asylum seekers into private or council accommodation will see rents rise and waiting lists burgeon. I really am worried about the next five years; we could end up with a housing crisis on the scale of Ireland's.

localnotail · 17/08/2024 22:06

OMG! Labour betrayed Free Speech! Starmer is awful, we warned you!!!

Bring back fucking liars, thieves, corrupt and incompetent stuck up wankers, they are SO, so much better.

Said no sane person ever.

Mrsdyna · 17/08/2024 22:07

It's awful and so sad. Anyone cheering the government on should realise that they'll come for you eventually.

Zeeze · 17/08/2024 22:07

So, OP. A message ‘appeared in your FB newsfeed’? And you had a damascene revelation that there is Government censorship? Another right wing shill. Moscow bot. Who knows? We see you.

Utterlydisillusioned · 17/08/2024 22:07

Thank you @Dibblydoodahdah . None of them look very aggressive or offensive, right? I hope other posters will make the effort to find them in this thread but I can't understand why they would be removed...

So what did you think of the Tory attempt to outlaw peaceful protest, distance us from our European neighbours, degrade the judiciary and hand power from Parliment to the executive? Because if you’re this worried about btl comments in the Telegraph, all that must have really freaked you out.

Thepeopleversuswork · 17/08/2024 22:08

55andlovinglife · 17/08/2024 20:27

Keir Starmer is just a younger version of Jeremy Corbin. He’s extremely dangerous. He has a clear ideology he wants to impose on us, as he knows better.

Honestly, we are 6 weeks in and I wish the Tories would come back, warts n all.

This is ridiculous. And I speak as one of the hated private school parents who are being inconvenienced by the VAT policy. And I voted Labour and have no regrets. “Extremely dangerous” because he is delivering on a policy he was very clear about before he was elected? You sound unhinged.

Massaging comments on social media is absolutely routine and politicians of every stripe do this. Grow up.

Yes you voted bad guys out. But you also voted bad guys in. Nobody wins.

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 17/08/2024 22:12

I get information about public opinion on government policy from the many independent platforms for freedom of expression that exist in this country (not least the free press that we are fortunate to have here), not from a minister's Facebook page.

Please don’t defend far right racists. It’s just not an appealing look.
