This has just appeared in my news feed and I feel so upset and disillusioned. I was a labour voter, thinking we voted the bad guys out but I'm now really scared about what we've let in...what on earth have we done...? https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/08/17/education-secretary-bridget-phillipson-private-school-tax-r/

The only saving grace is that they're almost certain to be a one-term government.

In fact I doubt they'll even last that long - I can see Sir Starmer being forced into a snap election in a couple of years time.

So you reckon a 158 majority is going to somehow melt within a couple of years?

Right....

55andlovinglife · 17/08/2024 20:27

Keir Starmer is just a younger version of Jeremy Corbin. He’s extremely dangerous. He has a clear ideology he wants to impose on us, as he knows better.

Honestly, we are 6 weeks in and I wish the Tories would come back, warts n all.

I didn't vote for Elon Musk. I voted for people I thought were honest and had integrity. This is what they told us. They said they were different, better. This is not right.

Edited

All politicians of all parties, and celebrities, and businesses, and in fact anyone, have always been able to do and have done this, it isn't removal of free speech because you can still post anything you like on your own feed.

It's not curtailing free speech to remove comments from one's own social media accounts.

There are better places to raise grievances and ask questions, and if people don't like her replies then it opens the door to unseemly public arguing.

Right....

Course it could. Just like it did 2019 to 2024. Many many marginal wins in all of that.

The actual number of votes they got was pitifully low for a majority government. I reckon they're on pretty thin ice.

But on such a scale? So openly? I've never seen it before

You've only not seen it because the Telegraph didn't bring it to your attention before.

It isn't censorship, you can post whatever you like (so long as it is legal) on your own SM.

How? Please explain the process you are imagining that makes the majority evaporate.

PonyPatter44 · 17/08/2024 20:31

Do you really seriously think the Daily Telegraph of all newspapers is doing anything other than desperately trying to smear Labour? I've been reading it for the past few weeks (long story) and sometimes the reaching to "blame Starmer" is laughable.

Excuse me?

Where did a 158 majority melt between 2019 and 2024? It certainly wasn't in the UK.

Utterlydisillusioned · 17/08/2024 20:22

I hope so. I feel betrayed and so scared

Really ??? “Betrayed and scared” , mainly because people have realised that they can be held accountable for what they say (good!)

People routinely remove comments, look at any thread on MN, and you’ll see things removed that are “against community guideline”

BTW, we don’t have “Free Speech” we never have .. if you want to go somewhere where Racists, Misogynists, and Conspiracy Theorists are allowed to say what there like, without any censure, move to the USA .. a place you will find a lot more scary

Starmer is nothing like Corbyn!
Corbyn is a life-long true socialist, ideological to his core.
Starmer is like Cameron - a dilettante "centrist" with no real political ideology but just fancies being "in power".

A lot of people leant their vote to Labour as they were brainwashed by the media that "Tories bad". I don't think they'll be doing the same next time.

Utterly irrelevant until such time as there is another GE, and if Labour feel like it, that won't be until summer 2029.

BunfightBetty · 17/08/2024 20:33

Provided the comments are reasonable - as some at least appear to have been here - why would an honest politician acting in good faith want to censor comments from concerned voters, instead of engage honestly with them?

Will Reform be bigger come the next election or will Nige have given up for good this time? If Reform voters go back to Tory and Lab voters have had enough then it could easily swing back to Tory. To me it all depends on the Reform party or any other far right parties that emerge. If they grow and grow, then the Tories are doomed. And based on current news, far right may continue to grow!

Have you ever seen facebook? Its troll central, as I said earlier no point politicians having such pages.

No - there will likely be civil unrest due to rampant inflation, tax rises, and the curtailment of free speech and women's rights, which will force them to call a snap election.

You said you thought there would be an early election.

If you mean you think they will lose in five years' time, that is possible.

But who will votes transfer to, on what issues? It is far too early to know that.
