This has just appeared in my news feed and I feel so upset and disillusioned. I was a labour voter, thinking we voted the bad guys out but I'm now really scared about what we've let in...what on earth have we done...? https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/08/17/education-secretary-bridget-phillipson-private-school-tax-r/

The key word in that article is alleged. Don't believe everything you read.
I have a feeling you didn't really vote Labour and this is a post to stir the pot

Findmethesmallestviolin · 17/08/2024 21:26

I’m bemused you

  1. voted Labour,
  2. support VAT on private schools
  3. read political thought articles on a right leaning paper only available by subscription
  4. regret your vote to the point of utter disillusionment 6 weeks into a new government based on the Facebook feed of one MP

It is all quite a contradiction

Arrivapercy · 17/08/2024 21:26

Merryoldgoat

It alarms me that all these people have nothing more serious to have a rant about. Honestly

It's social media the whole bloody point of it is to present a very curated perspective

It’s true. I have seen screenshots of many of the deleted comments.

And what was that "something" that he posted on FB, then?

Yes, I'd hazard a guess the bloke didn't "just post something on FB."
You don't get sentenced for posting a photo of your Sunday dinner.

‘I read all media actually as I'm in the media sector’

Is that what they’re calling working the kiosk nowadays?

Oh come on now. Did anyone really think the 6500 teachers would appear after the school holidays?

Like the 40 hospitals?

Or the 19,000 new police to replace the 20.000 experience police we had?

Or all the new drs?

And anyway - if you've given notice on your private school then you have until January as they all require a terms notice.

So I'm sure after recess they can work with LA to give those insurances. Which btw won't be the nearest school, or school of your choosing. You will get a school and if over 3 miles away a transport pass of some sort.

SelMarin · 17/08/2024 21:28

OP, if somebody deleting some comments on their Facebook posts is deeply scary and upsetting to you, you might not be mentally equipped to full engage in the wider world. Could you busy yourself with some relaxing solo hobbies?

Just found out today that this newspaper pays Farage 4K a month to write his racist shite, and it illustrates beautifully where the Troygraph’s principles lie.
I wouldn’t believe a word it prints.

5128gap · 17/08/2024 21:29

Surely everyone has always been entitled to remove posts from their own Facebook profile? It's not a new thing the Labour Party has suddenly introduced, is it?

Humanpincushion · 17/08/2024 21:29

Oh fgs hardly the first time a political party have manipulated public narrative.

get a grip

Maybe post the before and after shots here? You're allowed to- because if fee speech Wink

But as everyone has pointed out the article does clearly say alleged.

Because reading ALL newspapers is part of my job. That's why. Mystery solved. I read Daily Mail too, because I have to

NotSayingImBatman · 17/08/2024 21:32

It’s deeply concerning that the Tories have pushed things so far to the right that a centrist Labour government can be painted as “the far left”. Maybe try reading newspapers other than the Torygraph, it’ll be better for your blood pressure.

itsgettingweird · 17/08/2024 21:33

I think I love sooty has an excellent point. If reading media scares you it's probably not the right job for you. Grin

iamtheblcksheep · 17/08/2024 21:34

I love that the lightbulb has come on for some already. Grass isn’t always greener is it! Just wait until the budget comes.

Mum2jenny · 17/08/2024 21:35

Any one that believes the media shite, is a numpty. It’s been obvious that all political parties lie. And this will be ever so. Just vote for the least objectionable imo. I’d like to see proportional representation but this will never be a choice for the main parties. In this election, Labour got in with around 20% of the overall vote. How does that represent the views of the population?

ichundich · 17/08/2024 21:36

I am vehemently against the policy but can't see how how removing comments from her own Facebook page amounts to an attack on the freedom of speech? She's not telling The Telegraph to remove critical comments on their FB page, is she?

Ghostgirl77 · 17/08/2024 21:36

You are being ridiculous. It’s her facebook page, she can delete whatever she wants. It’s not censorship or “taking away free speech”, she’s not stopping you from making your comments anywhere else! She’s just choosing not to leave them displayed on her own page.

Stop buying into this right wing bullshit. It’s classic Telegraph tactics to try and undermine the credibility of the government in the hope that you’re impressionable and naive enough to fall for it and vote the Tories back in.

iamtheblcksheep · 17/08/2024 21:38

Utterlydisillusioned · 17/08/2024 20:23

I didn't vote for Elon Musk. I voted for people I thought were honest and had integrity. This is what they told us. They said they were different, better. This is not right.

Edited

This is the funniest thing I’ve read all week. I wouldn’t worry OP. They’ll be gone in one term. You’ll all be broke by then but hey ho.

OneBadKitty · 17/08/2024 21:40

I can't believe anyone who has worries about paying VAT on their school fees even voted labour- seems your views are juxtaposed.

It's not her personal page. It's her official page as a democratically elected senior cabinet minister. It's her responsibility to serve and communicate with her electorate. Not block them
