This has just appeared in my news feed and I feel so upset and disillusioned. I was a labour voter, thinking we voted the bad guys out but I'm now really scared about what we've let in...what on earth have we done...? https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/08/17/education-secretary-bridget-phillipson-private-school-tax-r/

removing a person's right to free speech is the stuff of revolutions. Starmer is a fucking idiot. A dangerous one too.

Starmer is a patsy to the hard left - he will do as he’s told.

Hence the GCSE economics and pound shop policing.

lubl · 18/08/2024 16:38

@pointythings the trouble is, left
wing media don't want to publish the truth. They've conveniently changed their newly mouthed tune since the publication of the Cass review, but not so
long ago over 300 members of staff signed a petition against gender critical
beliefs. They referred to these (commonplace, boringly uncontroversial) opinions as transphobia.

Who do you claim has removed whose right to free speech? Because the example quoted by OP is not the removal of any right to free speech.

Had that bloke not been arrested, accusations of two-tier policing would have been the least of your worries.

What would have happened to pointythings if he hadn't been arrested?

DuncinToffee · 18/08/2024 16:41

Any example yet of a person whose right to speech has been removed @lubl ?

Or a link to when Starmer removed the right to speech?

itsgettingweird · 18/08/2024 16:41

Some. But not as many as the handwringers on MN would like us to think.

I know at least 20 families who choose a private education for their children. A few aren't happy with the VAT.

Not 1 is planning to move to state school!

I agree with you pointy that what we read on MN isn't a reflection of what is being seen or being done in RL!

Half the people applying don't even intend to move their children. There was a SM group encouraging parents to apply to make a point.

Glad they have more time in their hands than I do 😂

And here you are, saying what you've just said. Free speech!

I knew Labour would be awful but they have totally outdone themselves.
I am constantly in fear of a knock on the door as I 'dare' to post about my concerns on immigration. We are currently living in clown world.

Do you feel that way when under the Tory government it was highlighted in a review that prevent doesn't tackle far right extremism enough and it was added to the list?

Didn't think so.

Rather like the men who worried that me too meant they'd end up being accused of sexual assault for just chatting women up, noone has got in trouble for doing what you say you're doing.

People are, rightfully, getting in trouble for inciting violence and hatred towards minority groups. You can say "I'm really worried our nhs can't cope with our existing population " or even make broad comments about integration. You can't suggest people deserve to be hurt. It's really not that hard.

Have you missed all the arrests for people who are posting negative remarks on social media ? I must be living in a different world then...

They have posted to go and set fire to hotels housing asylum seekers.

That not posting about concerns over the 700,000 immigrants that were given visas last year.

I don't know if anyone arrested for that!

They are being silenced because the education secretary responsible for the policy is effectively pretending that any question or concern doesnt exist. We live in a democracy. These people are democratically elected to represent the views of the public. How can they do that when shutting the public down or refusing to engage? Local mp's are not engaging either, they are all sending out the same stock responses. Its very concerning. I wrote to the Scottish Gov regarding concerns about my local NHS board. I didnt like the answer the gave me and i didnt agree with it, but at least they actually replied.

Because they are free to post their views and concerns all over the place, including Facebook. The fact that someone chooses to post a question does not mean that they are being silenced if the questionee doesn't choose to reply, or indeed if they reply with a stock answer.

If people are that insistent on getting a direct response, they can go to the MP's constituency surgery, they can put questions at public meetings; if they are valid questions, they will no doubt get asked on other forums, like TV interviews and Question Time.

People were constantly asking the likes of Johnson about his lies in Parliament and elsewhere, he and his supporters deflected them every time. Did you complain then that they were suppressing the right to free speech?

Marseillaise · 18/08/2024 16:48

lubl · 18/08/2024 16:19

@DuncinToffee he's made it clear that some opinions are more acceptable and more permissible than others and he's using "right wing thugs" to describe anyone who isn't a left wing idealist.

No, he isn't. He's using "right wing thugs" to describe right wing thugs, e.g the people inciting others to attack immigrants and set fire to hotels.

What would have happened to pointythings if he hadn't been arrested?

Huh?

The bloke was caught on camera. Had he not been arrested, accusations of two tier policing would have been well founded with implications for all of us, including the Labour apologists.

itsgettingweird · 18/08/2024 16:53

3 private schools near me have closed in the last decade.

We didn't have a Labour government then!

jellycatandkittens · 18/08/2024 16:54

@LeopardPrint12 I've seen all the posts about people saying negative things on social media. They were all racist or threatening.
Care to share examples of any that weren't?

And he was arrested. So accusations of two-tier policing are not well-founded. We can all be happy that free speech is not under threat.

Would that be because you went through the appropriate channels?

Nadeed · 18/08/2024 16:59

I am just trying to understand what you are implying would have happened if he wasn't arrested.

Not that it matters seeing he was arrested and charged with encouraging violent disorder

We didn't have a Labour government then!

But we did in 2008 though. And 1978 too. So they must be to blame, somehow.

Thank fuck the parties who wanted to remove our rights under ECHR didn't get in, eh?

I have read many of the comments. They were not provocative or inflammatory. They were from concerned parents, many of whom are being told by their LEAs that there are no spare places in their local state schools.

Really? There has to be a place in a local state school although not necessarily the one the parents prefer. All children are entitled to a state school place. If the school offered is more than walking distance the state will provide transport.

Unless it's a special school in case it probably is full.

But it seems likely the comment is a lie and that's why it was removed.

I went to a public meeting just before the election and this topic came up. The labour mp didnt answer questions on it just gave a stock answer on why he/labour think its a good idea. And yes, if you are talking about during covid then i did complain about freedom of speech then too. Its been getting steadily worse and worse. If you saw it then with boris, why do you not see it now?

removing a person's right to free speech is the stuff of revolutions. Starmer is a fucking idiot. A dangerous one too.

Starmer is a human rights lawyer. He's extremely well educated and experienced in this field.

What is it you do for a living that makes you think you know more than he does on this particular topic? Have you held a role where you defend the welfare of others or indeed any type of responsibility at all?
