This has just appeared in my news feed and I feel so upset and disillusioned. I was a labour voter, thinking we voted the bad guys out but I'm now really scared about what we've let in...what on earth have we done...? https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/08/17/education-secretary-bridget-phillipson-private-school-tax-r/

How will state schools get more money if they suddenly have an influx of ex-private school pupils needing school places? Surely this will just increase costs to state schools who will also have the burden of increased class sizes, pressure on school infrastructure of all these extra pupils etc whilst the Government has to fund all these new state school places.

Can someone please answer where the money comes from to fund extra state school places for the influx of ex-private school pupils?

It's really not difficult to work out. State schools receive funding for every pupil on their register, with extra for those with SEN. It costs very little more to run a class with 30 pupils than it does to run a class with 25 pupils; the only difference really is text books and stationery. Therefore, for state schools with vacancies, every new pupil coming in to fill those vacancies is a bonus. Even if they don't have a vacancy in the relevant year group and have to push a couple of classes up to 31, it's still a bonus.

removing a person's right to free speech is the stuff of revolutions. Starmer is a fucking idiot. A dangerous one too.

How are they being silenced? Each and every one of them is completely free to post their messages on their own FB pages and in a myriad of other public sources. You know that. Why perpetuate this myth?

They are being silenced because the education secretary responsible for the policy is effectively pretending that any question or concern doesnt exist. We live in a democracy. These people are democratically elected to represent the views of the public. How can they do that when shutting the public down or refusing to engage? Local mp's are not engaging either, they are all sending out the same stock responses. Its very concerning. I wrote to the Scottish Gov regarding concerns about my local NHS board. I didnt like the answer the gave me and i didnt agree with it, but at least they actually replied.

When did Starmer remove a person's right of speech?

I knew Labour would be awful but they have totally outdone themselves.
I am constantly in fear of a knock on the door as I 'dare' to post about my concerns on immigration. We are currently living in clown world.

I don't believe you're in fear. Unless you are constantly posting inflammatory racist stuff inciting riots or similar, you know perfectly well that no-one is going to come knocking at your door.

Apparently not, because the kids who go to the school in User's head don't like them. This results in 70, 80% wastage.🥸

Maybe they should add caviar or truffles

lubl · 18/08/2024 16:19

@DuncinToffee he's made it clear that some opinions are more acceptable and more permissible than others and he's using "right wing thugs" to describe anyone who isn't a left wing idealist.

Thank fuck the parties who wanted to remove our rights under ECHR didn't get in, eh?

@LeopardPrint12 "You are incorrect. There are people who are being arrested for criticism of immigration. Not even those who are being threatening or inciting anything. We are in dangerous times. Laugh or ridicule me all you like"

I will neither laugh nor ridicule. But I will
discount anything asserted without evidence...

Can you give a more concrete example of the removal of a person's right to speech?

And how would you describe the rioters?

Not true. He's describing people who are committing criminal offences online (which have been illegal for a loooooong time) and people who are rioting as right wing thugs. Which, given their targets (Muslims, asylum seekers) is manifestly exactly what they are.

Has it escaped your notice that a Labour councillor has also been arrested for incitement?

For the hard of thinking at the back: Freedom of speech does not mean being allowed to say whatever you want, nor does it mean freedom from the consequences of your words.

Do provide details, I'm sure they're readily available to you.

CurlewKate · 18/08/2024 16:24

@lubl "removing a person's right to free speech is the stuff of revolutions."

I absolutely agree. Tell me who is removing whose right to free speech.

AboveBeyond3 · 18/08/2024 16:27

pointythings · 18/08/2024 16:05

My point is that your contention that the current Labour party will lead the UK into ruin in 2 years and that the evidence for this is what happened in the 1970s is complete nonsense. I was just preempting you using the sub-prime crisis as evidence in case you were thinking of using that instead - Tories do so like to deflect from their own party's economic failings.

Hence also the small size of my proposed wager - your point really isn't worth more than a fiver.

I completely disagree.

Labours propensity to tax and spend is well documented - just look at them going gangbusters now. They were deliberately mute on tax rises during the election - it was blindingly obvious why. They are now providing unfunded wage settlements, premised on tax rises they will make in October.

I’ve seen it all before.

Meanwhile, I make no defence of the last Tory Government, hence my reference to Thatcherism.

TooBigForMyBoots · 18/08/2024 16:28

TBF to @LeopardPrint12 she is repeating the shite and lies pumped out by GB News. She probably thinks it an actual news channel, some do. It isn't.

What, the bloke who threatened some throat-cutting in a crowd and on social media?

Erm…

Marseillaise · 18/08/2024 16:29

LeopardPrint12 · 18/08/2024 13:54

Nah. Just can't be bothered to argue with a load of women who love the Labour government . If you think free speech isn't under threat then I am clearly living on a different planet to the rest of you.
Oh, and obviously I don't mean tweets with direct reference to incite or hate either. They obviously do deserve to be arrested.

You don't have to argue, people are just asking you to post a little bit of evidence of your assertion that people are being arrested for posting views critical of immigration.

Why would you suddenly get coy about that?

And why is it only women who are undeserving of your efforts?

I notice that no examples of free speech which is not incitement to riot or violence have been provided.

Have you come up with an example yet? Because you must have read it somewhere, seen a news story where someone who didn't use racist language or language that could incite violence was arrested and charged.
Your "nah I can't be bothered to argue" response is right up there with "do your own research".
Pathetic.

Yes. He's a left wing thug and rightfully was arrested and charged. Your point is?
