This has just appeared in my news feed and I feel so upset and disillusioned. I was a labour voter, thinking we voted the bad guys out but I'm now really scared about what we've let in...what on earth have we done...? https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/08/17/education-secretary-bridget-phillipson-private-school-tax-r/

Do the majority of schools serve a ‘good breakfast’ then? The food’s mostly junk from what I can tell and I can’t see how any of it helps anyone learn.

There are lots of ways that schools could operate more efficiently, and offering everyone the same healthy menu rather than a choice of several different items of junk (most of which must get thrown away) would be a great start. Apologies for the digression, but the idea that the crap served in state schools is ‘good’ and helps children learn is preposterous.

It’s better than nothing. Which is what they would otherwise get.

You are incorrect. There are people who are being arrested for criticism of immigration. Not even those who are being threatening or inciting anything. We are in dangerous times. Laugh or ridicule me all you like.

Come on then, give us an example

You won't get one. Scaremongers never back up the things they claim.

The point is, it could be healthy. It doesn’t have to be crap. And if it was all healthy and there was no choice - i.e. if one healthy meal was served instead of a hundred different choices of junk - it would be a hundred times cheaper.

I hope you still feel the same way when a bloke in a frock is standing next to you in the changing rooms.

Bingo!

Can't we have one thread where "blokes in frocks" aren't awkwardly shoe-horned into the discussion?

What is the one healthy choice that the kids will eat please?

A hungry person will eat whatever is put in front of them.

CurlewKate · 18/08/2024 13:51

@LeopardPrint12 Give an example of the kind of post you want to make but feel you can't, please

Gruel?

I was going to say that being disingenuous is better than just making snide comments that contribute nothing except to make the maker’s mean little virtue signalling heart glow, but I just realised that of course the snide little remarks are just a variation on thought cancelling cliches - all you want to do is shut down debate.

If you shut down debate, you are on the side of the powerful. Full stop. Freedom of thought and speech are important human rights and only the evil want anybody deprived of them. They are quite different from violent thuggery.

Edited

Cool, I’ve never been on the side of the powerful before.

TooBigForMyBoots · 18/08/2024 13:51

I think @LeopardPrint12 sounds more scared than "scaremongering ". Someone, probably connected to GB News, has exploited gaps in her knowledge and is making her feel afraid to further their own agenda/grift.Sad

Are we talking porridge here? Just say the food item you mean. And a hungry person has every fucking right to eat food that is palatable to them, how offensive to suggest otherwise. Mr and Mrs Bumble vibes.

DuncinToffee · 18/08/2024 13:51

Gruel?

Is it a choice between gruel and cheap burgers and pizza then? How absolutely tragic.

LeopardPrint12 · 18/08/2024 13:54

Nah. Just can't be bothered to argue with a load of women who love the Labour government . If you think free speech isn't under threat then I am clearly living on a different planet to the rest of you.
Oh, and obviously I don't mean tweets with direct reference to incite or hate either. They obviously do deserve to be arrested.

urbanbuddha · 18/08/2024 13:55

I don’t think some people in this country realise the extent of the poverty of their neighbours. I was working on a project in Westminster (the borough) about ten years ago and at that time research by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation showed that one in three children in Westminster - the second richest borough in Europe - was going to bed hungry. The situation will not have improved in the years of Tory government since then.

It's breakfast. I've never heard of a breakfast club that doesn't offer toast and cereal, the breakfast the vast majority of British people remain healthily alive on.

For breakfast, yes, I would serve porridge. And for lunch, one healthy meal.

iI own a nursery - we don’t offer a choice of food (imagine the waste). The children all eat the same healthy meal. Some of them turn their noses up at first, but funnily enough, they all learn to eat what is put in front of them. And they end up loving it.

FREEZE PEACH!

But I can't give you examples of what I claimed was happening because it didn't happen...

CurlewKate · 18/08/2024 13:58

@User8646382 are you objecting to cereal or toast? Because that's what every breakfast club I have ever been involved with has served. Usually with the option of some fruit.

Have you got a single real example of a person being arrested for 'criticism of immigration'?

A very long winded way of saying 'I've got nothing'.

@LeopardPrint12 "Nah. Just can't be bothered to argue with a load of women who love the Labour government"

You could have given an example quicker than posting that post!

KTheGrey · 18/08/2024 12:56

Wouldn’t worry - state schools will see neither an influx of private school refugees nor a penny of the VAT revenue. Bet you a fiver.

Well the influx of refugees depends on where you live and it doesn’t make you racist, to suddenly notice large groups of teenagers with accents coming out of the high schools in your area.

Mostly I’m objecting to the choice of junk that is served at lunch time. But yes, the breakfasts could also be better.

It's terrible OP, you can't say anything these days can you? I posted to Liz Truss asking why she trashed the economy, failed more abysmally than any other PM yet sqtill struts around promoting herself and stamping her little foot when everyone laughs at her? Deleted immediately, didn't even reply. Same with Boris. I asked if he felt even a sliver of shame about lying to the North to get elected and behaving so disgracefully that he's thrown the Tory party into the arms of Farage but guess what? Delete, no reply. I just can't understand it. No manners at all.
