This has just appeared in my news feed and I feel so upset and disillusioned. I was a labour voter, thinking we voted the bad guys out but I'm now really scared about what we've let in...what on earth have we done...? https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/08/17/education-secretary-bridget-phillipson-private-school-tax-r/

Most of school funding is determined by the number of pupils.

We don’t know how many and in which areas will transfer to state schools. They can apply for a place in the same way as anyone else and will be allocated a school place.

How can they estimate cost funding for extra school places if they have no idea of how many pupils will move into the state sector?

Well this is certainly a new way to drag up another whingefest about private school VAT

Just hide the thread if it bores you. You aren't obliged to read it.

https://www.theguardian.com/education/article/2024/aug/17/goves-free-schools-increase-segregation-and-harm-nearby-schools-says-study

The other side to the story… as far as I know UCL is carrying out a study on free schools which does not even conclude until 2025 yet these stories are being published. The reason some of us are pissed off with VAT on private schools is because it is just the beginning of certain commie education policies that will harm the country. It’s symbolic and interventionist and no other country does it. We agree that poor children need raising up but not at the expensive of other good parents who have plugged gaps and invested in their DCs. The hard left want the middle classes to somehow mix with disadvantaged kids and raise them up. It’s not going to work. Nor is VAT going to make money as the aspirational demographic will just adjust their behaviour and chose state plus. And some of the current women in charge are very green and inexperienced and bulldozering ideology through. It’s disappointing.

Finland banned private schools and now they have one of the best education systems in the world with the highest level of attainment for all children. What you want is for about 5% of the children in this country to succeed at the expense of the other 95%, this two tier system of society is not sustainable and should not be allowed to exist. Trying to right historically biased systems and wrongs that are prevalent in British society is not hard left it is right.

Finland has no private schools – and its pupils perform better than British children

Finland ranked seventh in the world in OECD's student assessment chart in 2018, well above the UK and the United States, where there is a mix of private and state education

I’m a Governor at a school, our food isn’t junk .. it’s good. There is a wide choices from Salads to Pasta, we always have a veggie and vegan option, plenty of water and fresh fruit.

What do people think state schools are ? Workhouses ?

InsensibleMe · 18/08/2024 14:11

A political party’s website removes posts critical of that party’s policies? NOOOOO!!!! What kind of dystopian world are we living in, dear heavens? The end of the world is nigh!

MadeleineMummy · 18/08/2024 14:15

People just seem to espouse a system of government marked by centralisation of authority under a dictator, a capitalist economy subject to stringent governmental controls, violent suppression of the opposition, and typically a policy of belligerent nationalism and racism and people call them fascist. What is the mainstream media coming to? No wonder people get their trusted opinions from Facebook which has proper vetting, fact checking, an editorial board and several layers of checks and balances, trained journalists who have public accountability rather than the anonymous fly by nights in the mainstream media.

Mostly I’m objecting to the choice of junk that is served at lunch time. But yes, the breakfasts could also be better.

Right then. So a total backtrack. You won't last long on here trying to improve the nation by forcing poor kids to eat wholefoods. Next you'll be asking why your local food bank didn't want your kind donation of quinoa.

How much of the food gets wasted every day? 70, 80%?

It’s not doing the kids any favours to throw money down the drain like that. Using emotive language to close down the argument won’t change that.

MadeleineMummy · 18/08/2024 14:20

Apologies, Johnson, Gove and all the other states that it was lunacy leaving the single market that we rely on for trade and we would be mad to deny our children the right to work in other European countries and align with countries that share our heritage and values to align with areas on the other side of the world. I was mistaken that the Mail, Express and Torygraph were advocates for this policy to ensure that their proprietors were not subject to the level of scrutiny that the EU was proposing, rather than to help the common person in the street.

I realise I was wrong.

I will happily make a prediction now.

Labour will entirely fuck things up within the space of two years. The majority of them are economic
pygmies driven by ideaology.

This last happened in the 70s and gave us Thatcher.

History WILL repeat itself.

Are you one of those people who make up facts in their head and then believe them @User8646382?

If you make claims, you need to substantiate them - otherwise you just look like you're making things up.

Well the influx of refugees depends on where you live and it doesn’t make you racist, to suddenly notice large groups of teenagers with accents coming out of the high schools in your area.

Sorry, when I said “private school refugees” I meant kids forced to leave private schools for state schools. I think their the parents of private school kids will move heaven and earth to pay the extra rather than move their kids, although if push comes to
shove they may just keep the boys at private and send the girls to state.

And no, noticing accents is not racist, definitely agree with you there.

Darling.

A level playing field doesn’t exist in nature. Do all you can to bring others down if you must, but you underestimate a parents willingness to do all they can for their children.

You will fail.

Your meagre 5 quid merely indicates your lack of conviction, or more likely that you lack the means.

Be serious please.

Cool, I’ve never been on the side of the powerful before.

Oh? Who’s being disingenuous now?
Just because you aren’t one of the powerful, doesn’t mean you can’t be on their side. It just won’t help you. But clearly you are against human rights and I congratulate you on your clarity.

Edited

My 5 quid is an indication of how seriously I take you - I note that you've had to hark back to the 1970s yet again - this is what Tory supporters tend to do. They also tend to ignore the global banking crisis of 2008, or think that it was caused entirely by the Labour government of the time.

Your post concerning level playing fields reveals your ideology - pure market capitalism, no support for anyone who has had a tough start in life, devil take the hindmost. I'm glad we no longer have a government that espouses this.

pointythings · 18/08/2024 14:37

Oh, and I just saw the bit about how I probably lacked the means. The snide assumption that anyone who supports Labour must be poor and on benefits - nope, doesn't apply. Some of us who are comfortably off working homeowners also have a social conscience, darling.

Right, so not Labour's fault then?

I do know what a CDO is. You'd come across as more plausible if you didn't deal in personal attacks and name calling.
