This has just appeared in my news feed and I feel so upset and disillusioned. I was a labour voter, thinking we voted the bad guys out but I'm now really scared about what we've let in...what on earth have we done...? https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/08/17/education-secretary-bridget-phillipson-private-school-tax-r/

How will state schools get more money if they suddenly have an influx of ex-private school pupils needing school places? Surely this will just increase costs to state schools who will also have the burden of increased class sizes, pressure on school infrastructure of all these extra pupils etc whilst the Government has to fund all these new state school places.

Can someone please answer where the money comes from to fund extra state school places for the influx of ex-private school pupils?

How many private school pupils will be leaving for state school?

Some. But not as many as the handwringers on MN would like us to think.

This is how this type of people get in. Once people stop voting or go for minority candidates they get in. You were fed a lie. I hate to say it but there were many people saying they were going to be worse just to be met with cries about scaremongering. That woman is actually quite dangerous but let’s wait before I get crucified again. Give it two years so that we can have that conversation.

What lies were we fed? The manifesto was released pre election.
It’s good to finally have a party in government with some intelligence and aren’t continuing with the reckless Tory policies.

Most of school funding is determined by the number of pupils.

We don’t know how many and in which areas will transfer to state schools. They can apply for a place in the same way as anyone else and will be allocated a school place.

Wouldn’t worry - state schools will see neither an influx of private school refugees nor a penny of the VAT revenue. Bet you a fiver.

I am not convinced there will be such a big influx.

The majority can afford for fees to increase - families who might only just be able to afford private education have already been put off.

And if lots of students leave, the schools will need to accept smaller student numbers or cushion the impact for parents, either through more bursaries or overall smaller increases.

I knew Labour would be awful but they have totally outdone themselves.
I am constantly in fear of a knock on the door as I 'dare' to post about my concerns on immigration. We are currently living in clown world.

Begsthequestion · 18/08/2024 13:01

Well this is certainly a new way to drag up another whingefest about private school VAT

Quite.

This issue has the most fervent posters who never miss a chance.

The Tories tried to feed us this lie.

Maybe that's what she's talking about. And anyway, that poster might just be the next messiah, so be careful.🫣

Jeremy Hunt admits Tories 'would NOT have cut taxes' as promised if re-elected

Ah, the party of tax cuts, is it? Jeremy Hunt has revealed that any relief the Tories promised to taxpayers was not actually forthcoming.

Perhaps looks at all the other stuff that has been redacted in the past particularly the Thatcher papers- Hillsborough, Orgreave, etc before whinging about a few comments being removed about public schools.

One of the current opposition actually hacked a then opposition website for shits and giggles and has so far escaped prosecution.

The Conservative and Unionist party has suppressed far more than a couple of comments.

Have you missed all the arrests for people who are posting negative remarks on social media ? I must be living in a different world then...

What are you posting? Why on earth would you be living in fear unless you're repeating or spouting racist propaganda, if that's the case, I welcome the your door being chapped 🤞🏻

Parker231 · 18/08/2024 13:13

Because what they call "concerns about immigration" isn't generally "I believe the economic benefits of immigration are overestimated and the social costs underestimated".

When it's not just blatantly racist it's usually about English culture being destroyed in some mysterious way even though they can never cite any actual examples of what it is they want to do but aren't allowed to.

No one has been arrested for posting negative remarks on social media. People are arrested under suspicion of breaking a specific law that the police inform them of at the point of arrest.

What are people being arrested for and what have you been posting?

Exactly, it's never just "I was arrested for voicing valid concerns", there's always something else they're conveniently leaving out or refusing to see.

LeopardPrint12 · 18/08/2024 13:24

You are incorrect. There are people who are being arrested for criticism of immigration. Not even those who are being threatening or inciting anything. We are in dangerous times. Laugh or ridicule me all you like.

Labour won a large majority of seats with VAT on private education as a core manifesto commitment. State schools badly need the money and it's wonderful that children will be able to start the day on a good breakfast, ready to learn.

Do the majority of schools serve a ‘good breakfast’ then? The food’s mostly junk from what I can tell and I can’t see how any of it helps anyone learn.

There are lots of ways that schools could operate more efficiently, and offering everyone the same healthy menu rather than a choice of several different items of junk (most of which must get thrown away) would be a great start. Apologies for the digression, but the idea that the crap served in state schools is ‘good’ and helps children learn is preposterous.

urbanbuddha · 18/08/2024 13:34

Using social media to call for hotels housing asylum seekers to be set alight is not “criticism of immigration”. It’s stirring up racial hatred.
The people who did this deserve imprisonment.

MorrisZapp · 18/08/2024 13:35

Junk food for breakfast? Do you mean cereal and toast?
