This has just appeared in my news feed and I feel so upset and disillusioned. I was a labour voter, thinking we voted the bad guys out but I'm now really scared about what we've let in...what on earth have we done...? https://www.telegraph.co.uk/politics/2024/08/17/education-secretary-bridget-phillipson-private-school-tax-r/

Me neither

This thread is about 80% fake posters. 😂

Yes, they do appear to be censoring free speech.

I voted in Labour but I will take my vote away, as will many others if they go to the extreme left.

I mean - what did you actually think was going to happen, esp with Rayner as DPM. Great you are going to take your vote away….shame it will be too late.

Do people in her position even need facebook pages. All seems a bit infantile. They will attract hateful comments so rather than delete just dont have a page in the first place.

Yeah - was about to comment that my Conservative MP has never had any social media presence. It's annoying and also quite sensible!

I can't see why Phillipson shouldn't delete streams of aggressive remarks if she sees fit. It's a Facebook page, not PMQs.

If you're a constituent with an axe to grind, make an appointment to see her like I do with my MP.

Yes, as someone is the country clearly heading for dictatorship

And yet, although there was no response last time I asked, you weren’t disturbed by the machinations of the last government? The threats to evoke Henry 8th powers, the illegal prorogation of Parliament, the blatant efforts to suppress dissent from all sides? Just this?

Which one @ChallahPlaiter ? The mum of SEN kids? Or the other one?

It's telling how she / he was unable to argue with the content of the posts...

Of course I could argue with the content of the screenshots! I could argue until the cows came home. And I probably will on a relevant thread, so let’s not attempt to derail this one eh?
Why are you ignoring my more substantive posts?

The only saving grace is that they're almost certain to be a one-term government.

In fact I doubt they'll even last that long - I can see Sir Starmer being forced into a snap election in a couple of years time.

Why?

ChallahPlaiter · 17/08/2024 22:54

Again, the original writer of the screenshot looks a self-important prat for the reasons I’ve already outlined. Twice.

For disagreeing with a policy that adversely impacts their child/children and trying to engage the member of the government who is responsible for that policy, oh yeah, such a prat. The thing is, Bridget Phillipson (or her team) could have just done nothing and left the comments there. Absolutely zero need to delete them. They weren’t offensive or discriminatory.

Sorry, I responded to the wrong message. You said a poster on the screenshot posts sounded "like a total prat". I was asking which one? The mum of SEN kids or the other one?

Because they don’t have an answer. They promised VAT on private schools to buy Labour votes, a bit like the Brexit bus.
It is going to take years and much more money raised promised from vat on schools to fix the mess that the education sector is in.

The education sector is connected closely with the social services, police and the economy.. When one part of the chain is broken, everything else is broken. In our case everything in this chain is broken. The VAT on schools is only going to put a small patch on the problem. I already know few people who have jumped ship to state high schools because of the VAT increase next year. It has started to happen.

Can’t remember but it doesn’t matter since as I’ve said already, the prattish part was the portentous statement that This Will Be Screenshotted.
Please try to understand and move on now, I beg of you.

@Dibblydoodahdah I agree and you should report that comment. This is what people do when they lack words

Bit ironic when you're complaining about "free speech being eroded"
😁

Where is the money coming from to build these thousands of houses? I thought most councils in GB were skint? How on earth is central govt going to fund such ambitious building programs?

Well I’m guessing the source of the money will be given via October’s budget. Let’s remember Rachel Reeve’s statement after the GE, when apparently she said our finances following the ousted Tories were ‘far worse’ than she or the Labour government had anticipated. This is paving the way for heavy taxes coming our way. This is the pattern typically followed by a Labour government. They won’t allow a shortage of funds to halt their plans, and will spend, nspend, spend, and then worry afterwards about costing after they have bankrupted our country. That’s what they do I’m afraid…..

WolabiMe · 17/08/2024 23:05

I’m gonna ask Mumsnet if we can have a separate topic re VAT on private schools. It’s tedious and doesn’t affect 96% of the population

Garlicfest · 17/08/2024 23:06

WolabiMe · 17/08/2024 22:24

Wow a huge amount of posters on here have ‘witnessed with their own eyes’ posts being deleted. Crazy you’d all find this thread at the same time!!!

They all sound the same, don't they. Whatever the spurious trigger for their heartfelt indignation, they froth together and in the same voice.

It’s almost as though you’re picking at a part of my post so you can obfuscate my point but obviously that would be a ridiculous way for you to behave. 🤔

SelMarin · 17/08/2024 23:07

Hi OP

You keep missing my question about why it's okay that Tory MPs have been doing this for years, but once a Labour MP does it you're terrified, can you please explain?

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 17/08/2024 23:09

I doubt the Telegraph publishes even half of the letters it receives from readers expressing their views about policy
