I can't put my finger on it but I always feel depressed in August. June on the other hand is the perfect month.Grin

There are no wasps, hadn't you noticed? This is not good

Do you know what? I hadn't noticed, but now that you've mentioned it, I honestly don't think I've seen a single one.
We are usually tortured by them at work in the summer, but not this year.

theduchessofspork · 17/08/2024 22:52

It’s undeniably the end of summer, so to be a bit sad makes sense. I guess just try and glory in it being the main holiday month, if you can.

June is fabulous for both gardens and long days.

Gertrudella · 17/08/2024 22:52

Could it be the amount of rain we’ve had that have something to do with not many wasps being around - we’ve had loads of bees in the garden

Batmanisaplaceinturkey · 17/08/2024 23:27

I have found my people!

I feel a sense of dread and this thread has brought into perspective why. Sunday evening vibes is an apt description!

saltinesandcoffeecups · 17/08/2024 23:30

I’ve lost track… do we love August or hate it in this thread?

I’m on the ‘not so much’ side. I want fall by this point. In 21 days I’ll be on my annual boat trip that marks the start of fall. I hate my summer clothes at this point. Am happier that it’s actually dark out when I go to bed. It’s my birthday month so at least I get cake. But yeah, It will be a slog for the next couple of weeks. Oh and just as it’s starting to cool down where I live I get to look forward to 90F/32C for my work trip next week 🫤

Eyeballpaula · 17/08/2024 23:44

August is heading towards summers farewell, but it's a sort of 'everyone on holiday' party month - even though I work through summer there is still a different vibe at work, less traffic on the roads etc.

I love september and like autumn and the run up to Christmas though so I embrace it.

Even the kids have about 2 more weeks off school - we are only halfway through the month!

June is the perfect month, with the lovely long days, and August can be a but sad as the days are starting to close in, but it is still summer, so not depressing

I agree. Always feels so melancholy - the end of summer, nights drawing in, kids going back to school etc. It gives me a ‘Sunday night’ sort of feeling - anxiety almost?

Agree.

I used to dislike spring because it was still so cold, still got dark quite early, and the ground was hard and bare, no real flowers yet. Just felt a bit crap to me.

Now I get it. It's still chilly, but the spring sun is lovely and bright, and as cheesy as it sounds, it's the hope and optimism of what's to come.

I now view spring a bit like I view Christmas Eve - you think spring isn't as good as summer, but in actual fact it's better, because you still have summer to look forward to.

As much as I love a lot about autumn, from August onwards just now feels a bit flat to me as we are heading into the dark months....and they are so long Sad

HeddaGarbled · 17/08/2024 23:58

But, but, but: it’s summer, the weather’s lovely. It’s sad that so many of you don’t seem to be able to just enjoy it because you’re thinking about what comes next. You can choose misery if you want to. I’m not.

IfOnlyOurEyesSawSouls · 18/08/2024 00:38

End of August i always get blue 😞

Like others , I get a strange , sad feeling at this time of year , I think it’s the “ back to school “ feeling , even though I’m 51 .

Ditto

It’s lovely in some parts of the UK. Here in NI autumn is firmly in the air - it’s all a bit depressing when summer didn’t really come!

HauntedbyMagpies · 18/08/2024 00:54

@Newsenmum Not really. My DD is Autistic so getting her out of the house unless it's somewhere she wants to go (which is very rare these days - stupid Minecraft), is like negotiating with a lamp post. Thank you for the thought though.
Someone on my Facebook feed was whisked away to Mexico for her 40th birthday last month, by her partner, as a surprise. That stung quite a bit, I must admit.

Namechangeno · 18/08/2024 00:55

We always had summer holidays to Majorca end of August. Anytime after mid August is definitely a change in the weather. Even if hot ,it is not the same as July sunshine .

fridaynight1 · 18/08/2024 01:09

August is my least favourite month. It's the end of summer, my garden is past it's best and we are heading to dark nights and cold. Conversely, January is my favourite - a new year, a new beginning and spring is on it's way.

Pineappleprep · 18/08/2024 01:42

I'm not a fan of August but only because it's still summer. Fully looking forward to it being dark at 1700, even more so in winter when it's dark at 1530! I can't wait.

I've been enjoying browsing all the autumn/Halloween stock the shops are bringing in and planning a load of cosy slow cooker meals for the colder months. I hate summer.

Nourishinghandcream · 17/08/2024 19:34

Although spring is definitely my favourite time of year (gentle warmth, evenings starting to draw out, garden & countryside coming into leaf etc), late August is ok as we can start planning to go to all those places that we avoid during the summer.
Come the first day of term we are away in the moho making up for lost time.😆

I don't think we had a spring this year though. I kept waiting for it to happen but it never did. I know from the garden. I wasn't able to get into the garden to tidy up from the winter it was always raining

KickHimInTheCrotch · 18/08/2024 06:33

The only months I find hard going are January to March. I love August, proper time off work to spend with the DC. Warm nights with the windows open, mooching about on walks, picnics, camping. Looking forward to the new school year. DC both like school and are excited to see new uniforms, bags and stationary build up. I always think the new school year has such promise.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/08/2024 06:35

I agree. It's getting darker earlier and winter is just round the corner. I like may.

AmIHereReally · 18/08/2024 06:38

My kids are here from uni, the weather here has been great and London is much quieter than normal. What’s not to like?!

xxSideshowAuntSallyxx · 18/08/2024 06:44

I noticed it getting darker earlier this week, the lights are now being switched on at 9pm. The Skylarks have all but disappeared by now too. Autumn is definitely on its way.

August sadly brings the impending gloom of Autumn and Winter.

I'm dreading the going to work in the dark and coming home in the dark that's on its way.

SecretWitch · 18/08/2024 07:16

I am decidedly not a summer person so anxiously waiting for August to be done with. All the buzzy summer people doing summer things is off putting to me.

Give me long candle lit evenings snuggled under a blanket just reading and hanging out with my SO.

They're all at the Loxwood Joust. It's half reenactors, half wasp down there.

I'd take a bunch of wasps over LARPers any day.

I'm waiting for the first bite in the air - I love Autumn.

LittleLantern123 · 18/08/2024 07:41

I live in the NW and to be honest we are still waiting for summer! It feels like we have had endless bloody wind and rain since October last year.
I am hoping that the last few weeks of August up until early October are warm and dry. I have health issues and this constant rain and low temperature does me no favours.
I used to love Autumn and Winter as a child but we had more defined seasons, we used to make hay on the farm because it was warm and dry enough to do so, swapped to silage about 25 years ago because the climate changed 😔 winters were cold and brutal with 6ft snow drifts that stayed around for weeks but we had multiple wood burners in the house so it was easy to get toastie and warm inside once the jobs were done!
I think I miss proper seasons, it's just endless months of rain and cold now and most days looking out of the window you couldn't tell if its supposed to be winter or summer.
