I can't put my finger on it but I always feel depressed in August. June on the other hand is the perfect month.Grin

I'm not a fan of the Summer. I'm counting down the days until September 1st when the best time of the year begins.

MeinKraft · 17/08/2024 21:53

I quite like August and that whole part of the year up until probably Boxing Day. Then fucking reality hits that winters only just started and the fun festival bit is over. But then before you know it it's shrove Tuesday and Easter is on the horizon and with it the promise of beautiful spring and the summer ahead.

OneBadKitty · 17/08/2024 21:54

I don't like the dryness of the garden in late August- the lushness of spring and early summer is gone- the grass is browning and patchy, the lime trees are shedding their dried up flower heads everywhere, the leaves are looking tired on the apple trees, the flowers in my pots are looking spent now, and there's a dustiness in the air.

The evenings feel too short and the sense of change everywhere.

I'm already trimming everything back for winter and looking ahead to next spring. May the winter prove short and sweet and spring come quickly and the next summer be more sunny and milder and longer than this one.

HauntedbyMagpies · 17/08/2024 21:48

@Newsenmum Two of them moved away and we grew apart in the years since. Then my 20 year friendship ended 8 years ago when I became a mother & she got married and completely lost interest, effectively ghosted me... I've been on my own friend-wise ever since, as lone parenting doesn't lend well to finding new friendships!

Sorry, I don't want to derail OP's thread! As you were....!

Oh no! Can you afford to give yourself a real treat day? Even if with the kids?

MeinKraft · 17/08/2024 21:56

New Year's Eve I would say is the low point of the year for me. I always feel sad and weird about leaving the year behind and entering into (sob) January. Plus DH always puts on (double sob) Jools Holland and I also really hate auld land syne.

Yeah the hydrangeas look like shit already and you have to keep the dead heads on until next sodding spring.

Oh wow, there really aren’t! 😮

They're all at the Loxwood Joust. It's half reenactors, half wasp down there.

MrsWidgerysLodger · 17/08/2024 21:58

I love this time of year. DHs work means that a family holiday is off the cards for most of July and early August. It's the part of the summer holidays where I actually get my little family all together. Plus I adore autumn and knowing it's not too far away is lovely.
I've also found that in recent years the weather has been consistently better towards the mid/end August and into September than it is earlier in the summer holidays.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 17/08/2024 22:02

Oh, oh, I know why.

  1. Spider mating time (so the big ones come out of hidey holes cos they're horny)
  2. Jenny longlegs are everywhere
  3. It's starting to get that wee bit darker
  4. We (Scotland) have had 2 days of summer
  5. If your a supermum you will miss your kids cos they're back at school.
Is that enough?😊

Who in the UK has had enough sun for brown grass?

I live in the sunnier than average part and still no dry land, or cracks in the ground. Not a single hosepipe ban.

MySocksAreDotty · 17/08/2024 19:21

I have to go back to work 😨 definitely got mid-August blues.

Likewise

Suzuki70 · 17/08/2024 22:10

We were away for the one week it hit 30 degrees and all my herbs and annual flowers died. My garden looks like October.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 17/08/2024 22:10

At this point of the year, I am sick of summer stuff in the shops/online. Round about mid August, autumnal things start to appear and shops and websites have a lovely, fresh look which is deeply cheering.

Also, countdown to Strictly!

Hoardasauruskaren · 17/08/2024 22:12

I’m in Scotland where we’ve had no summer at all this year! Really not ready for Autumn yet! I love the light summer nights which are really drawing in now making it feel like summer is over. Still hopeful for a bit of late summer sun before Sept though! And our grass is very green not a brown patch to be seen.

NameChange210 · 17/08/2024 22:12

It's definitely a Sunday night anxiety feeling. May & June have the Friday night feeling with the whole summer ahead, August has a feeling of impending dread about it. Sorry to be dramatic

Hahaa. Yes this. Just when we all planted drought hardy plants cos of climate change the climate goes cold and wet.

Its not all about the weather though. It's progressively expensive as we get darker. Literally we start spending on Christmas in October. I can't bear it.

RamonaRamirez · 17/08/2024 22:13

August is to the year what Sunday afternoon is to the week

we’ve had some fun, but not enough, and the dread of a new school year and September rains is already in our minds

CubistViolin · 17/08/2024 22:27

Honestly, having spent a couple of years living somewhere with no seasons, I’ll take even the more melancholy bits of the seasonal cycle. You don’t get the excitement and light and growth of spring without the dial-down of autumn and winter. Which I realise is a deadly cliché, but it’s true. Living somewhere where it was always dry and hot and more or less vegetationless, and where the hours of daylight were the same all year round, was really depressing. I came back in love with seasons.

marmaladeandpeanutbutter · 17/08/2024 22:32

I'm very much a summer person so I get what you're saying. I like August but I'm aware in the back of my mind that the summer is coming to an end. I agree about June-it's the anticipation and hope for the summer.

Exactly. We moved and everyone said to plant for shade as summers getting hotter and we'd welcome the shade in the future.

Plants have grown and the summers are cold.

I usually have the slightly melancholy feeling of something winding down and coming to an end, but this year my DD is about to have her 2nd baby so we are all full of excitement & anticipation with a new life about to begin

That's Brilliant! Congratulations!

Our grass is half brown. We’ve been watering it this week as some of it is new turf so don’t want it to die.

Hadjab · 17/08/2024 22:48

I love August, always have. Now my kids are old enough to look after themselves, I can enjoy it more. September is my favourite month though, it’s my birthday month, then I can really focus on Christmas.

Gertrudella · 17/08/2024 22:49

I have always thought that August feels different from the rest of the summer months, I’m early 60s and still get the back to school feeling but in a good way now. Like a mini fresh start.

looking forward to less busy lovely places to walk as kids are back in school, F1 returns soon, usual gang on the Chris Evans show returns and everything just feels more normal for me.

My grass is looking so lush for this time of year but some flowers are beginning to fade now and leaves turning autumnal colours. It’s a funny old month 🥴

Crabwoman · 17/08/2024 22:49

Dog days of summer. I've always felt there's a pensiveness in the air as well. (Not sure if it's a hangover from going back to school).

Everything is past its best and waiting for Autumn.
