I can't put my finger on it but I always feel depressed in August. June on the other hand is the perfect month.Grin

I get a weird feeling too OP. A kind of melancholy.
But I do love autumn once the leaves start turning, big warm jumpers, boots, wood fires, comfort food, starting to think about Christmas. Staying in more, doing more baking.

gov · 18/08/2024 18:47

Accidentally hit the wrong choice - I said that YABU when I very much think that YANBU!! Had to make a comment to correct! I wish we had the same school holidays as Scotland, breaking up in June & back in mid August, because summer fades so fast in late August and it’s always depressing. I also wish that we’d stay on BST all year because I hate the dark evenings.

Pliudev · 18/08/2024 18:57

I always think autumn starts in mid August. The garden has gone over and the evenings are shorter but still muggy. It's also the time when I get bitten. Last night a large fly kept landing on me and I ended up with itchy red bites on my legs. It just wouldn't leave me alone and I had to go into another room to escape it. I'm having to wear insect repellant in my living room.

Crunchymum · 18/08/2024 19:03

I find August peculiar as I spend half of it desperate to get back to the routine and structure of school / work and the other half relishing the freedom and the lack of demands (being up at 6.30am everyday, clubs, hobbies all stop for summer etc)

I feel sad but also glad about the darker evenings / more autumnal weather. Although we're set for a warm end to August here.

It's very strange. No other month makes me feel this way.

I have a real love / hate relationship with August.

"PFB" is due to start secondary school in a few weeks and I'm definitely feeling the "August Angst' this year.

Although I have a very, very strong memory of being in a park with DC1 and DC2 (both very young) in very late August 2017 and feeling a shift in the air. I actually felt a perceptible shift as summer became autumn. Was very bizarre but one of those rare 'feeling at one with the universe' moments. I'll never forget it.

MadeInYorkshire69 · 18/08/2024 19:06

August always feels a bit melancholy and out of routine, I now actually enjoy September more, apart from feeling sad about the nights drawing in.
May and June are usually the best but not this year 😰

Snoopsnoggysnog · 18/08/2024 19:06

Not getting this at all, baking hot all day here in the south east, has been all week, but with nice cool evenings, forecast is the same next week.

still two weeks of the holidays left and I’ve got the last week off which I will spend pootling about with the DC getting things ready for school and we’ve got some theatre tickets booked etc.

I work in a fast paced role in the city and things are much quieter. I love this time of year! Kids are a bit feral though 😂

DOBARDAN · 18/08/2024 19:06

It is around mid August that I start to feel happier, knowing that autumn is just around the corner, I really look forward to it.

There are no wasps, hadn't you noticed? This is not good

Yes I've noticed too, also flies?

linsey2581 · 18/08/2024 20:05

August is the best month of the year, it’s my birthday month!!

openforall · 18/08/2024 20:06

September is becoming my favourite month
So im looking forward to that

New school year, new start! Back to routine

lindyloo57 · 18/08/2024 20:08

I like August up to today, my birthday, then I'm sad, as nights start to pull in, autumn and winter is on the way, I love June and July best.

I have only seen about 3 this year! Mind you I hate wasps and love bees

We have them in our garden. There are still some about.

I feel a bit sad as it’s the ‘death of summer’ month in scotland, if we are lucky to have one. Trees start changing colour ever so slightly, bloomed shrubs and flowers start to wilt, haystacks start appearing more and more. It still can be warm but in a last hurrah kind of way. I think i have residual anxiety from the teenage years with exam results and the start of term (scotland), also where i studied at uni it’s term started in august and all the feels from that. A family member who passed away started to get unwell in august and i feel grief circulating again. Weirdly i sometimes find it calming as well as the craziness of summer ends and i can plan my year, garden breaks away etc for the year.

SE here and this August has been gorgeous after a miserable spring and not great June/July.

Yes, I agree. It’s my busiest month at work but I’ve been making the most of the weekends and really enjoying it.
My children are long grown so no ‘back to school’ stuff, I just hope the warmth lasts into the second week of September like it did last year for my weeks holiday.

suburburban · 18/08/2024 21:48

We've had quite a few

Anyone else had those annoying large brown moths flittering about and coming in the house

RavenhairedRachel · 18/08/2024 22:31

I 'm not a fan of August either I always get the feeling of the summer days coming to an end and shorter days and colder weather is not far away. I like April and May for the opposite reason,.

Murphs1 · 18/08/2024 22:48

It’s funny I usually feel exactly the same this time of year, that the summer is drawing to a close, and darker nights and autumn is not yet welcome. But this year I’m enjoying ‘late summer’ and have reminded myself the past few years, September has been beautifully sunny and warm. Hopefully we still have a good few more weeks of sunny warm days to look forward to.

cinnamonwhirl · 18/08/2024 22:50

August, die she must
The autumn winds grow chilly and cold

Baking hot? We must have a very different definition of baking.

DrCoconut · 18/08/2024 23:09

It's starting to get dark too early now 😭, just as summer was starting to get going. We just desperately need a prolonged spell of good weather and good light and it hasn't happened for the past 2 years. Horrible for people who are solar powered and really need it to recharge their energy and mood. It looks like the temperature is on the way down now and then it's the long haul through autumn and winter. June and July are usually the best months and I'd happily forgo bonfire night and Christmas for year round summer. So anyone feeling meh at the moment is not alone.

Gingernan · 19/08/2024 00:50

I prefer May and June

Yes I live in the South East and it definitely wasn't baking or scorching hot yesterday or Saturday. We had the odd day above 30 last week, and a couple of days in July. But I've definitely not sat in the garden much this year.

What it has been is dry though.

TaterTots68 · 19/08/2024 08:50

I get it. May and June are full of promise. By mid August I start thinking that autumn is just around the corner. Once we get to September, it's Christmas before we know it

I love moths - so pretty and very important pollinators.
