I can't put my finger on it but I always feel depressed in August. June on the other hand is the perfect month.Grin

@HighlandCow78 , Sunday night feeling is a perfect description.

The tea-time of the soul.

Hahaha... in an attic flat between the tannery and sweet factory... not so much...

Ha! I was about to say - I'd rather I saw less of some of the hot (and unwashed) summer stinky bodies in a market town Asda this lunchtime.

On a personal level the first half of August is rough for me. My daughter died Aug 15, 1990 and my father died Aug 11, 2011. Once I'm past those dates though I start to feel rejuvenated. I live in the US. The nights are getting cooler which I love (I hate the heat of summer) and usually the days are cooler and less humid then they were in July. I work in a school and we have one more week and we are back. I love my job, so I'm happy to be going back. All my kids are grown now, but when they were school age I also loved the routine of "school time". Fall is my favorite season and I know it will be here soon

I’m so sorry about your losses. I also have a particular summer month where I lost a few close people and it is forever tainted for me. All the faux summer positivity makes it worse for me.

Fall has grown on me over the years and I love how it seems in the us! I try to make a bigger thing of pumpkin picking, beautiful autumn leaves and walks and lots of warm, festive drinks.

WomensRightsRenegade · 17/08/2024 21:18

I feel melancholy because there are still two whole weeks until schools go back. Teen kids are fed up now and need to get back to routine - I always find the ‘back to school’ feeling delicious. I love a few weeks of hols but after that it drags. The esrly
autimn feeling in the mornings now gives me a real thrill

Time40 · 17/08/2024 21:19

I love it - it's still summer! There is more summer to come! I don't think summer is over until late September.

It is a bit sad, though, with night falling earlier, and the greenery looking a bit past its best.

There are no wasps, hadn't you noticed? This is not good

We have loads. There’s a nest outside DD’s room 😬

exiledfromcornwall · 17/08/2024 21:20

I hate summer, hate having to mow the lawn constantly, hate the hot, humid weather we get where I live. By the time August comes around I find myself looking forward to September. Autumn is my favourite month. Where I live the autumn colours are so amazing, who needs to go to New England?

WolfFoxHare · 17/08/2024 21:22

Mid-late August is the Sunday teatime of the year. The ultimate ‘school tomorrow’ feeling.

Same! 30th August here. It's my 40th this month and I've no friends anymore 😢 So I'll be spending it alone. Not looking forward to it at all. Might buy some sleeping aid pills and try sleep through it all.

What happened to your friends? 😢

I normally like August.

However it’s cold today, getting dark already, I have a glass of red wine and there’s a Harry Potter movie on TV.

So it feels like autumn already, and I’m mildly depressed that there has been no real summer.

It as lovely and warm here today without being as crazy hot as it was last week.
So maybe depends on the area. It doesn’t feel like autumn here at all. More like summer in full swing! Kids in outdoor pool today and tomorrow looks similar weather wise.
I too don’t like it when autumn arrives. Mainly because of the darker nights.

Funny you should say about this OP, This is the first year where I’ve really noticed this. As a PP said, there’s a definite touch of autumn in the air and the light has changed. Mention of the Sunday evening feeling is right as well!

Thought it was just me noticing the slight drying out and browning of the leaves. We went for an evening walk and there was a nip in the air and the light went down really quickly… Sunday evening feeling sums it up perfectly.
I found myself looking at my food cupboards and freezer this week to see what stock I’ve got… definitely an autumn/ winter habit of mine🍁

HideousKinky · 17/08/2024 21:25

I usually have the slightly melancholy feeling of something winding down and coming to an end, but this year my DD is about to have her 2nd baby so we are all full of excitement & anticipation with a new life about to begin

BashfulClam · 17/08/2024 21:25

The Scottish Schools are back so this is Autumn for me. I love September and October but the I’d happily hibernate till March…how do I get in on the hibernation gig like Bears?

Guavafish1 · 17/08/2024 21:27

Love August

Hate December to February- so dark and grey and miserable

Wheredidileavemycarkeys · 17/08/2024 21:27

I love Autumn so, no, I have no problem with August. It’s to damn hot during summer these days 😂

Mistressofnone · 17/08/2024 21:28

I find mid-late August odd too. Everywhere is a bit quiet, yellow and dry. I love the autumn but feel guilty for not relishing the summer more while it's here! I miss the structure of the school term.

I get waves of excitement when I see the autumn stuff appearing in shops and the TV schedule gearing up.

I do wish we would just stick with GMT+1 though. Love the dark mornings but prefer lighter evenings.

Scorchio84 · 17/08/2024 21:28

Yeah mid August always has that "back to school" feeling for me too, lots of leaves have already fallen, I don't mind that but it's just another reminder that summer has gone & soon it's be early alarms & getting our shit together for school

scalt · 17/08/2024 21:30

This year, August has made me happy. Spring and summer were exceptionally late this year. I have not forgotten:
April: cold and very wet.
May: cold and very wet.
June: cold and very wet.
It's made up for the crap weather in April, May, most of June, and most of July. We've had the best of the summer weather in late July and early August, at a time when children can enjoy it too. In several previous years, the only glimpse of summer was in June, when children were stuck in school, and teenagers were doing exams.

Mumsnet is always full of people wishing the summer away and moaning about the heat, which we only have for a very short time each year.

PerkyMintDeer · 17/08/2024 21:34

Summertime Sadness.

Yes, it's quite melancholic. Especially as we didn't really get much of a summer at all this year.

I am trying to look forward to Autumn. Decided to embrace the Pumpkin Spice Latte cosy vibe this year and I'm thinking of rewatching all of Gilmore Girls, taking regular Autumn Walks, read twee Autumn books and get some twee home decor and apple/cinnamon scented shite. Because I get badly affected by SAD and I honestly don't think I can take it this year.

I HATE Nov/Dec/Jan. Need a plan to get through that.

Give me the bliss of May/June when it's all ahead of us in it's glory any day.

kfellover · 17/08/2024 21:39

My birthday is the end of August and a lot of my family are born in August so it’s a really busy month for me. I like it, but I can see why it makes people feel like Sunday tea time, it definitely has them vibes.

Eldrick47s · 17/08/2024 21:47

Greenlittecat · 17/08/2024 19:15

I like August! I don't like January or November though, too cold!

January is my birthday so that takes care of that month for me (otherwise, being post Christmas decorations and cold, it would be shit).

November, just after Halloween, and it's the run in to Christmas, so not too bad.

February is probably my least favourite.

HauntedbyMagpies · 17/08/2024 21:48

@Newsenmum Two of them moved away and we grew apart in the years since. Then my 20 year friendship ended 8 years ago when I became a mother & she got married and completely lost interest, effectively ghosted me... I've been on my own friend-wise ever since, as lone parenting doesn't lend well to finding new friendships!

Sorry, I don't want to derail OP's thread! As you were....!

KimKardashiansLostEarring · 17/08/2024 21:49

August is the pit of the year. Sept-January is the best. I love the new school year, autumn, run up to Xmas and a fresh new year. The rest of the year I’m just waiting for September.

That's not right. Two summers ago was boiling, July especially.

The last two summers have been very unseasonal.

Oh I had never thought of you all in that context. It's always " youngest in the year " like spoilt babies.
Have a last day of summer birthday. Invite all the neighbours because actually no one wants more than one or two of them to actually arrive.
