It's been in the news today. Monkey Pox or M pox is spreading they have found a case in Sweden now and hinted it could spread more.
Anyone worried or is it scare mongering.

It seems to be in the news again?😪

Nope.

namechangeforthisi · 15/08/2024 21:35

I think there will be a lot of cases in the UK but it will get under control early

ItWasntMyFault · 15/08/2024 21:36

No - there's no point worrying about something I can't change and is very unlikely anyway.

skibiditoilet · 15/08/2024 21:37

get informed and read up on it yourself, do research and decide if the news report is sensationalist or not.

Edingril · 15/08/2024 21:37

Why? will worrying prevent it?

Blankfaced · 15/08/2024 21:38

No

sonofrageandlove · 15/08/2024 21:39

No, it is what it is

Mumofteenandtween · 15/08/2024 21:40

No - I am kind of “virused out”. I just don’t have the ability to worry about viruses any more.

Why is it unlikely?

It is concerning as this strain has a higher mortality rate. Last outbreak seemed to be mainly in the MSM population. The vaccination programme seemed to work well. Not clear if this is same. Perhaps we need another vaccine roll out again for targeted populations. Then wider if needed.
I am hoping it won't be a big thing. Healthcare can really do without another big issue!

Congratulations....you've cured anxiety!

Pottedpalm · 15/08/2024 21:44

The scientists are worried…

LaMontser · 15/08/2024 21:45

You can only get from skin to skin contact with an infected person or something where they have shed infected skin. So sex. Sharing towels or bedding with an infected person. Last time it was mainly confined to men who have sex with men. But that doesn’t mean much really. - it’s just how it spread. There is a vaccine and effective treatment if you think you’re at risk.

YANBU to worry about public health issues. But keep it proportionate.

Spreading more easily now. Not just sex and towels etc.

Seeing as it’s often transmitted via sexual contact I think it’s possibly unlikely to become a big thing for you unless you aren’t in a monogamous relationship?

Whu · 15/08/2024 21:52

I’m a bit worried about it as I read the new strain was a 1/10 fatality rate which is far, far higher any other pandemic disease in Europe in our memories.
Personally, I participate in a close contact sport and am also at the gym daily which is not the most sanitary environment with everyone’s shared sweat and breath!

MilkyWayAtoms · 15/08/2024 21:55

I am worried. With that fatality rate (and the ways it can now be caught) we should be shutting down travel from affected countries immediately (or at least reintroducing quarantine hotels). Did covid teach us nothing?!

AgileGreenSeal · 15/08/2024 21:58

Nope.

x2boys · 15/08/2024 21:59

We had all this a couple of years ago and it faded into nothing, scientists are at risk of cry wolf here',most people are fed up because of covid and until things become if they do become serious, are going yo ignore it..

It's transmitted more easily now.. but no, still not worried

MonsteraMama · 15/08/2024 22:01

I feel like I should be. I remember in the late months of 2019 when Covid was but a whispered rumour, laughing with my pals going "it's just a cold, what's going to happen really?" and then look what happened.

But I'm not worried yet.

SunnieShine · 15/08/2024 22:01

Give me a minute to finish my banana and swing down from the chandelier and I'll let you know.

Username75184 · 15/08/2024 22:03

Can anyone share a rational, non sensationalist report on this please?

Not true. Close contact transmits it hence the high number of children who get it.

Ponoka7 · 15/08/2024 22:06

I know this strain is slightly more contagious, but we have these outbreaks every year. Were you aware of last year's numbers? They've declared a national emergency so African countries take note and respond appropriately. Nigeria responded quickly when there was the last out break of Elboa. It can be done. In the Congo, 'white' medicine isn't trusted, healthcare workers are killed and gealth/vaccination centers burned down. A national emergency allows for military back up.
