Anyone else worried about M pox?

It's been in the news today. Monkey Pox or M pox is spreading they have found a case in Sweden now and hinted it could spread more.
Anyone worried or is it scare mongering.

It seems to be in the news again?😪

No. I don’t worry about things I have pretty much no control over.

Comedycook · 15/08/2024 22:09

Tw33dleD33 · 15/08/2024 22:05

Not true. Close contact transmits it hence the high number of children who get it.

I think it has spread a lot in the DRC because so many people are living in camps in very close quarters with each other and limited sanitation.

Butterbeanbutterbo · 15/08/2024 22:13

I have a little involvement in this through work. This is a different strain of mpox to the one that was in Europe a couple of years ago (actually multiple other strains or ‘clades’). So far in places like DRC there have been high cases in children - so it is not only / mainly spread by sexual contact. The numbers are very high and fatality % worrying (although latter could be inflated by unreported cases I guess).

I deal with it by not thinking about it too much😬. There are vaccines

Dymaxion · 15/08/2024 22:13

I thought the fatalities were largely in young children ? which is awful , but at the same time , the areas with outbreaks probably don't have access to the level of health care we have here, would that have an impact on the figures ?

ListenLinda · 15/08/2024 22:21

What is the fatality rate and R number?

Tw33dleD33 · 15/08/2024 22:05

Not true. Close contact transmits it hence the high number of children who get it.

Of course close contact will be involved but children will generally get it from an infected parent. More of an issue in this country for healthcare workers who are involved with physical care …but it’s still not something that’s going to keep me up at night.

Caroparo52 · 15/08/2024 22:26

Yes its been on my radar this week. Case in Sweden today. God I hope its now Round 2

MySereneBird · 15/08/2024 22:28

From the WHO “The emergence last year and rapid spread of a new virus strain in DRC, clade 1b, which appears to be spreading mainly through sexual networks, and its detection in countries neighbouring the DRC is especially concerning, and one of the main reasons for the declaration of the PHEIC.”

No.

The scientists are worried…

Which ones and who is paying them?

it’s a hard no from me.

LaMontser · 15/08/2024 22:32

girlfriend44 · 15/08/2024 21:51

Spreading more easily now. Not just sex and towels etc.

It’s still largely spread through very close contact with some cases linked to coughs and sneezes from an infected person. Again, you’d need to be in close contact with them. It’s mostly spread through sex still.

jaimelesoleil · 15/08/2024 22:32

NO

MrsSkylerWhite · 15/08/2024 22:36

No. From NHS website:

”Mpox is usually mild and most people recover within a few weeks without treatment”.

TeenLifeMum · 15/08/2024 22:38

No, not worried at this point. I get confidential email updates and measles and whooping cough are far higher on the concerns list.

TheHouseElf · 15/08/2024 22:39

Absolutely not, and I won't comply with any stupid lockdown measures if any Government stooges are watching this forum either. I am fully done with virus outbreaks thanks.

Mespher · 15/08/2024 22:43

No

Corksoles · 15/08/2024 22:44

It has a high death rate in children so, yeah - it's worrying. All those poor families in the DRC - we could have been vaccinating them all this time, and reducing the risk for the rest of the world's children.

Was just going to say similar. I don't get emails but I work in schools and whooping cough, measles, and covid are far higher on my list of concerns than m-pox. And vomiting bugs because they're grim and are always going around school (my body is a bit of a dick when it comes to vomiting bugs, it doesn't know how to stop being sick once it starts so I almost always end up at urgent care for a fluids drip and a bum cheek injection of anti-emetics).

I'm not trying to downplay it but the media will be wetting themselves with glee at the prospect of the 'next covid' because fear sells.

KimKardashiansLostEarring · 15/08/2024 22:44

In a word, no.

mummymeister · 15/08/2024 22:48

Yes I am. I used to be involved in emergency planning and have a background in this. both Mpox and bird flu are horrendous in terms of the consequences. I have a religious friend. they believe covid was sent to prepare us for the horror that is to come and to start working collaboratively and to work harder on vaccines for diseases previously viewed as "third world and not worth the bother" I used to think they were a nutter. I am not so sure now.

You tell em 😂

Firealarm1414 · 15/08/2024 22:49

No. I just can't do this again. If they start wanting lockdowns again with the state the economy and general mental health, (particularly in kids) is in after the last ones they can fuck right off.

I doubt they would do it again. The country can't afford it.

Covid was unprecedented, it was a new disease with no vaccine, this is not a new disease and it has a vaccine.

AInightingale · 15/08/2024 22:52

MilkyWayAtoms · 15/08/2024 21:55

I am worried. With that fatality rate (and the ways it can now be caught) we should be shutting down travel from affected countries immediately (or at least reintroducing quarantine hotels). Did covid teach us nothing?!

Edited

There should already be mandatory tests at airports and Dover for anyone arriving from the African nations where it's prevalent. But of course there won't be. No, we learned nothing from Covid. Nothing.

Whichbagtochoose · 15/08/2024 22:52

No. It’s basically an STD. Yes I know other close contact will spread it but that’s it.
