It's been in the news today. Monkey Pox or M pox is spreading they have found a case in Sweden now and hinted it could spread more.
Anyone worried or is it scare mongering.

It seems to be in the news again?😪

It is not "scaremongering" for the WHO to put out a notice declaring this new strain of Mpox a global public health emergency.

That gives notice to governments to increase their screening and awareness of this disease, and hopefully contain the spread.

I remember the rumblings of covid in the news a few years ago and everyone saying ‘don’t worry, why are you panicking, there aren’t any confirmed cases in the uk’ And then I remember the news announcing the first case in the UK and then the first confirmed death!!! And we all know the rest of the story.
My point being……yes it’s not here yet but that doesn’t mean it won’t reach our country! People are allowed to be concerned, it’s not fair to dismiss people’s fears as nonsense, as it’s probably only a matter of time until it is detected in other countries and starts to spread cross the globe. Yes, there may be vaccines and ultimately I’m sure most people will be fine but health anxiety is real and Mpox is real, that’s a fact confirmed by the WHO so we can’t deny that it exists and it is a risk.

How young are these children. If previous was sti (ie. Bodily fluids); is it not potentially breast milk? I know that some of these countries breastfeed for a much longer period of time due to poor drinking water?

One was a newborn - spread from someone else in the hospital with an undiagnosed case. Also reported spread in schools - so through droplets, formites, standard close contact of kids. The sad thing is that there is an effective vaccine that Congo are shouting out for that hasn't yet been delivered. The small pox vaccine I believe is somewhat effective so they are using that in the meantime.

Horsecalledrhubard · 16/08/2024 03:19

Couldn’t care less, and quite frankly think it’s all rubbish anyway.

LaMontser · 15/08/2024 21:45

You can only get from skin to skin contact with an infected person or something where they have shed infected skin. So sex. Sharing towels or bedding with an infected person. Last time it was mainly confined to men who have sex with men. But that doesn’t mean much really. - it’s just how it spread. There is a vaccine and effective treatment if you think you’re at risk.

YANBU to worry about public health issues. But keep it proportionate.

I listened to an expert who also said the virus could be passed on from touching something a phone an infected person had been using

Pineappleprep · 16/08/2024 03:35

I wouldn't say I'm worried or anxious, but I'm aware and will keep up to date with any developments.
There's already multiple established vaccination programs again MonkeyPox, there's just not enough vaccines in the countries that need them most, hence the regular rise in cases and this new variant which hopefully one of the existing vaccines can be modified fairly quickly to contain this new strain and keep deaths down.

There's a lot of false information going around that only homosexuals can contract it which is completely false

I bet you said that in Feb 2020 too.

Misspacorabanne · 16/08/2024 06:28

its probably already over here, isn’t there a period of time where symptoms of feeling unwell start and then the blisters begin?

namechangeforthisi · 16/08/2024 06:43

From what I've read the virus has become both more infectious and deadly, but there are effective vaccines

Hunglikeapolevaulter · 16/08/2024 06:50

The world economy is already trashed from the covid response and the mass orgy of money printing.

Beezknees · 16/08/2024 07:09

NAndJIsLockingDown · 16/08/2024 05:03

It's not the same though. Unknown disease vs one that is known and already has a vaccine.

MayonnaiseOnMyChips · 16/08/2024 07:27

Its disappeared from the BBC news website, maybe that means we shouldn't worry now?

LividSummers · 16/08/2024 07:30

My Facebook friend had it in 2022. In this country. Caught it from ?Gran Can.

The data I saw said the fatality rate was very low. I’d worry if it got higher, which this new strain might. I worry about society, Twitter is full of Americans shouting “we will not comply” as if diseases care about their political feelings.

Vic6 · 16/08/2024 07:35

NAndJIsLockingDown · 15/08/2024 23:51

Yep. We warned you that Covid was just the very start.

Sweden needs to go into full Lockdown immediately. Our government needs to start shutting down international travel and introducing protections, though I wouldn't trust Sir Starmer to organise a piss up in a brewery.

For our DC's sake, please get the masks out again. And we're going to need gloves this time too.

He’ll be banging everyone up pretty soon anyway !

namechangeforthisi · 15/08/2024 23:26

I don't know anyone who goes out to work now

Really? You don't know anybody who works for the NHS, emergency services, care workers, retail staff, teachers, manual workers, electricians, plumbers, refuse collectors, cleaners? No one?

namechangeforthisi · 16/08/2024 07:44

@Beezknees no. No wait, I do know one. But I don't talk to him, for years, I just know him

user68712226 · 16/08/2024 07:54

People really should educate themselves. This is a mutation, a new strain with a high death rate and spread through the respiratory system ie breathing and droplets as well as through physical contact. Children are particularly susceptible. The WHO doesn’t put out this sort of emergency warning for no reason

the nhs website hasn’t yet been updated and refers to an old strain.

GRex · 16/08/2024 07:58

No, I'm not concerned for most parts of the world because there's a vaccine. If I lived in DR Congo, or if it remains uncontrolled by October, then I would become mildly concerned and start asking harder questions about vaccines and border controls.

RedVanYellowVan · 16/08/2024 08:07

namechangeforthisi I'm fascinated by how you don't know anyone who goes out to work. Do you mean know them as friends, or don't know them even in passing? I don't know your living circumstances but here we have a postman, the crews on the bin lorries, the Prime and DPD van drivers, there are staff in the shops, a professional dog walker comes to collect my neighbour's dog, the driver of the private ambulance who came to collect an elderly neighbour's body, builders doing an extension up the road, nearby farmers out doing their stuff, etc etc.

Back to mpox. No, not worried but will keep an interested eye on developments. I don't believe all the people claiming they would not comply with any restrictions would still say that if it happened to get very bad here.

Beth216 · 16/08/2024 08:13

From the BBC:

The current outbreaks in DR Congo are being driven by sexual contact and by other forms of close contact.

I'm not worried, no.

No I mean as in know them personally

MouseofCommons · 16/08/2024 08:26

A tiny bit. It looks like it's only spread by contact so far.

Wtf?You do realise not everyone can work from home ,who do you think teaches ,children ,treats the sick ,keeps law and order, sells your food ,drops of your amazon deliveries ,etc ,etc, etc.

FindingMeno · 16/08/2024 08:42

I don't get all this me, me, me.
Yes, I'm worried for the children in DR Congo.
No one seems to give a fuck about them.

usernother · 16/08/2024 08:42

Not in the slightest worried.
