It's been in the news today. Monkey Pox or M pox is spreading they have found a case in Sweden now and hinted it could spread more.
Anyone worried or is it scare mongering.

It seems to be in the news again?😪

No. It’s basically an STD. Yes I know other close contact will spread it but that’s it.

Edited

It's spreading a lot in schools in the Congo and has a reported 10% fatality rate in children over there. So whilst you wouldn't expect it to be anywhere near that bad here I'd still prefer it didn't get in.

Exasperateddonut · 15/08/2024 23:55

Welll….. I’ve just booked flights to Sweden for 5 weeks time. I’m sure it’ll be fine…

ListenLinda · 15/08/2024 22:21

What is the fatality rate and R number?

This study (www.sciencedirect.com/science/article/pii/S2588933822000267) has the R number for the previous strain at approximately 3.1, and expect the R number for this strain to be orders of magnitude higher.

The fatality rate is widely reported to be approximately 10%.

We need protections.

At least we have a decent government that gives a shit about people this time.

If you're male, perhaps.

Cobblersorchard · 15/08/2024 23:57

No, not worried. I might be if I was likely to come in to contact with anyone that had been exposed but it’s very unlikely for me personally.

There’s already a vaccine to so the management would be far easier.

I’m not saying it’s completely insignificant, but not worthy of worry yet.

I don't know anyone who goes out to work now

Indeed - not stepped into the office since March 2020.

Yes I am. I used to be involved in emergency planning and have a background in this. both Mpox and bird flu are horrendous in terms of the consequences. I have a religious friend. they believe covid was sent to prepare us for the horror that is to come and to start working collaboratively and to work harder on vaccines for diseases previously viewed as "third world and not worth the bother" I used to think they were a nutter. I am not so sure now.

Your friend is still "a nutter" if they believe they can vaccinate themselves from death (because the vast majority of deaths are from disease of some kind).

TooBigForMyBoots · 16/08/2024 00:00

The Mpox virus has mutated. That is why the warning has been sent out.

Mespher · 16/08/2024 00:01

We will have to have a section on here for it like Covid

Why? will worrying prevent it?

Would you be worried if you had cancer? What makes some things worthy of worry to you? It's normal to worry about things that might impact on life. A bit of worry is what motivates us to prepare and plan and ultimately makes us safer. Why do you think we use car seats, seat belts, highchairs, earthed plugs even?

1dayatatime · 16/08/2024 00:32

Well I'm willing to sell the Government PPE equipment at very reasonable prices if that helps.

Not sure how effective it is or when it will arrive but I promise it will be "reasonably priced".

Dymaxion · 15/08/2024 22:13

I thought the fatalities were largely in young children ? which is awful , but at the same time , the areas with outbreaks probably don't have access to the level of health care we have here, would that have an impact on the figures ?

How young are these children. If previous was sti (ie. Bodily fluids); is it not potentially breast milk? I know that some of these countries breastfeed for a much longer period of time due to poor drinking water?

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 16/08/2024 00:40

Orders a pallet of toilet paper

I would have thought it was more likely in areas where sex with a virgin is viewed as a cure for life-threatening sexually transmitted diseases.

What!!

Nadeed · 16/08/2024 00:53

Nope. Don't have sex with strangers. At worst we will be advised not to shake hands at work. You have to be in physical contact with the blisters to catch it.

Nadeed · 16/08/2024 00:56

Young children engage in a lot of physical contact. But if a case is detected in a child they will be quarantined.

UNICEF and some researchers think it's a big issue, others refuse to accept it, possibly for ideological reasons.

BobandRobertaSmith · 16/08/2024 01:08

@Inlaw @Dymaxion it’s spread by respiratory droplets (coughing, sneezing, breath), fomites (inanimate objects touched by someone who is infectious), as well as skin to skin and sexual contact. Clade 1 (the current outbreak of concern) is more easily transmissible than Clade 2 (the previous outbreak) and has a higher fatality rate.

Boopbeepbeepboop · 16/08/2024 01:36

No...perhaps I'm living under a rock but this is the first I've heard of it 🤣

PoopedAndScooped · 16/08/2024 01:41

LaMontser · 15/08/2024 21:45

You can only get from skin to skin contact with an infected person or something where they have shed infected skin. So sex. Sharing towels or bedding with an infected person. Last time it was mainly confined to men who have sex with men. But that doesn’t mean much really. - it’s just how it spread. There is a vaccine and effective treatment if you think you’re at risk.

YANBU to worry about public health issues. But keep it proportionate.

The one they are concerned about is the more contagious and more deadly one
Which is capable of killing 1/10
You can catch it through breathing , sneezing and coughing too in close contact

There are not enough vaccines
They arent sure what anti virals work
There is no ‘set’ treatment

I work in a restaurant where the clientele are almost exclusively pensioners. Feels like they are the only people with money these days. I think they’ll survive.

You have no idea!!!!!
