To think being short is mostly rubbish!

SillySausageSandwich · 14/08/2024 21:09

For context…. I’m 4ft 11. And it’s rubbish! Here is why -

  • Food! I can only eat about 1500-1700 a day. I exercise a lot, I try to be healthy but a couple of biscuits and boom, I’m a fatty!
  • Food no.2..eating out.. If I have a main meal then a pudding it can be more than my daily allowance.
  • Gaining weight! One tiny bit of weight and I’m a fatty. And it’s far easier to gain then loose!
  • Alcohol - I just can’t handle it. I’m a ‘cheap date’ but who wants to be drunk on one glass of wine!!
  • Cloths - they just don’t fit! At 14 I got a sewing machine so I could take up all my jeans but often it’s not just the length. The curves and shape just doesn’t fit!
  • Cloths no.2 - short person, little feet! I used to be a size 3, now most size 3 are too big! And 2.5 are less common.
  • Respect.Im an adult, a full on grown up but I constantly feel younger than I am because often feel like people treat me that way. I’m sure there is a statistic about career success and hight/earnings (tall people do better)
  • Running! A 5k for me is a LOT longer than a 5k for someone with longer legs!!
  • Supermarkets - why put things so high up!!
  • People thinking I’m ‘cute’ if I was me, but taller, I wouldn’t be cute.
  • concerts - I can’t see. Any group of people and I’m stuck looking at people’s backs.
  • nose in armpits on busy public transport.

Im sure there are more!!

I also suspect being taller than average is equally rubbish - public transport seats, cloths not long enough etc (but could eat soooo much food!!)

Walking with a taller person and taking three steps for every two they take.

Sleeves are always too long.

4 feet 10 1/2 inches!

StoneofDestiny · 14/08/2024 21:19

Surely
you get more leg room on flights, at cinemas and theatre
You can lie full length on the settee
your feet never stick out the bottom of the bed
In the rain, your brolly will not be taking other people's eyes out when walking
You can jump the queue without being noticed

SkaneTos · 14/08/2024 21:19

I hear you.

(But as a shorter person you get to feel petite. I am 5 ft 8/174 cm and I never get to feel petite. I would love to have smaller feet, too.)

ghostyslovesheets · 14/08/2024 21:24

Nothing being in petit sizes - limited clothing options
Having to ask people to get things down off shelves
Trying to find a car you can drive without sitting on the steering wheel almost upright to reach the peddles
All 3 of your kids being taller than you - even the one that's 5ft 2"
Sleeves - bloody sleeves made for long armed people
Being described as a pocket rocket - at work!

BUT being able to but kids shoes is a bonus.

5ft 1" so a bit taller than some of you short arses - but still a bloody short arse

HRTQueen · 14/08/2024 21:26

I’m 5’1 1/2

I’ve always liked being small I’ve found people are always quite protective

down side is weight gain is very noticeable and I think you have to put more thought into what clothes look good

and now I’m middle aged and dumpy when struggling to reach something off the shelf in supermarkets men are not rushing over to help me

greenwoodentablelegs · 14/08/2024 21:28

4 11.5 here and love being short. You just do what you want and smile and get away with it.
yeah clothes and shoes is a pain.

everything is more comfy as we are smaller. Flights, sofas, husbands.

personally I am lucky enough not to have a sweet tooth so am ok with food and drink a load.

personally I love being being proper short rather than like boring 5 4 or 6.

coxesorangepippin · 14/08/2024 21:29

Totally agree

And I'm 5'5!!!

Thing that bothers me the most is so few calories

Strawberrycheesecake7 · 14/08/2024 21:29

I agree. I’m 5ft 3 so not that short overall, but I have disproportionately short legs. I can’t wear jeans or any other trousers because they’re always too long. I find exercise and keeping a healthy weight difficult as well. There are some positives though. I always have enough leg room. I also find that it makes people more helpful. For example when I’m travelling on trains and buses with my son I always have people rushing to help me lift his pram on and off. My husband doesn’t get any offers of help.

Decoratingdilema · 14/08/2024 21:30

I’m 5ft 1 and it’s shit. Nothing really fits properly. I’m also a fatty with huge boobs that I despise

my daughter was under an endocrinologist for a little while, she still isn’t on the growth centile chart. She is predicted to be 4ft 11.

she is already sick of being called “little” and promptly tells anyone off that dares to use the word (she’s 5)

SillySausageSandwich · 14/08/2024 21:31

@StoneofDestiny yes… flights and trains can seem positive…. But I can’t reach the floor on most flights and trains! Which is really uncomfortable long haul!
Cinema .. all the ones near me have big reclining seats…
Brollies are an issue, above my head is at others eye level!
queue jumping…. I’ve not tried, but people have just jumped in front of me! ‘Oh sorry, I didn’t see you there’!!

Beds are probably better for shorties though! (Still, I have a king size, like to do the star fish)

@SkaneTos .. I’d love to feel tall and elegant. Always envy people who have those lovely maxi dresses!

Ah, but the seats are too high to rest your feet on the ground so your feet end up dangling which gets so uncomfortable after even a short time!

I'd like to add:

  • Mirrors over sinks in public places are often too high.
  • People thinking it's okay to hold a door open for you so you have to duck under their arm like a child.
  • Taller people on the Tube leaning their whole body up against the vertical poles so you can't hold onto one and the horizontal ones above the doors are too high to hold onto.
  • Seats in public places (coffee shops, cinemas etc.) and on public transport being too high.
  • I have to say supermarket shelves again because they're my real bugbear!
  • Having a short torso so the straps of vest tops and strappy dresses fall off too easily.

5'1 here, so appreciate I have a couple of inches on you, OP, but I still feel your pain!

Perpetuallydaisy · 14/08/2024 21:33

Re supermarkets...I just climb up the shelves to reach items out if my reach.

If they don't want short people climbing all over their shelves, they can provide steps, or tall shop assistants in each aisle, or poles like apple-pickers, or just not put things too high up!

79pinkballoons · 14/08/2024 21:34

Totally agree with all your points! I'm 5'0.

Also - legs dangle like a child from sofas, plane seats etc.

  • never look elegant
  • tall people bend down to talk to you like you would with a toddler which feels very patronising
  • only see the top part of my head in some mirrors
Gorgeousfeet · 14/08/2024 21:35

I haven’t read through the thread fully but being little has its pros and cons.

I am five feet one and a half inches. The half inch is very important 😁

Gently. So long as you are healthy and happy with your life, then who actually cares about your height. Apart from you. And this you have to learn to accept and respect it’s the way our body is made .

SillySausageSandwich · 14/08/2024 21:35

@Strawberrycheesecake7 my best jeans are Zara crops, they fit perfectly as regular jeans … but they’re crops! They’re not even ankle grazers!!!

I do agree, people can be really helpful. I get a lot of help at the tip (or rather recycling centre). Cloths and food shops tend to require me asking for help.

Myfavouriteflowers · 14/08/2024 21:36

Oh I totally agree with you OP.

I'm 5ft 2ins and it's a pain in the neck.

On an everyday level such things as trying to get trousers is a nightmare: even those supposedly " short" - which are difficult enough to get anyway - are usually far too long.Similarly skirts are all far too long. Not being able to see if you are in a crowd is so frustrating. Etc. Etc.

I look at the current generations of females who are not only taller than
me but are " statuesque" and who I feel must get taken seriously because they have a physical presence. I feel so humiliated and intimidated. . I don't have the physical presence to be taken seriously.

GoodnightJude1 · 14/08/2024 21:37

I’m 5’10 and my step sister is 4’10. I could get served in pubs at 14….she was still being asked for ID at 30. I am VERY jealous of that now but at the time I loved it.
She always had loads of shoes/boots/trainers as hers were half the price of mine.

Swings and roundabouts I suppose…..

I love being tall now but hated it in my teen years when everyone commented on my height 🙄

But you find the 1/2 inch important to you?

It's not about disliking your body - it's about how difficult it is being short - and how you are treated - uncomfortable seats, clothes that don't fit, etc.

Gabby10 · 14/08/2024 21:38

I'm 4ft 8 and 100% agree! Petit sections in shops piss me off, it's like they think all short women do is go to work in shirts, skirts or formal wear! Although I have found that ankle grazer jeans in the normal height section do actually fit nice length wise! Dresses though I hate! I basically have to wear a long top as a dress because if not I look like I'm a kid trying to wear their mums clothes 🤣. I also get ID'd a lot! I'm in my 30's and look it, I even question why and they always say 'oh it's because you're so short' 🤦🏼‍♀️

SillySausageSandwich · 14/08/2024 21:39

@StaySpicy ohhh you reminded me - bra straps!!!! I need to be selective because some simply don’t go short enough!

Agree with all your points!

Gabby10 · 14/08/2024 21:39

Although I do enjoy being able to buy trainers from the kids section to save myself some money 😂.

LadyKenya · 14/08/2024 21:39

I love my height, which is 5'1. It has its downsides, such as reaching the top of supermarket shelves etc, but I am fine with my height, and build, which is very slim. I used to have issues finding clothes that fitted right years ago, but now I have no issues due to petite sizing. I just used to buy clothes from the teenage range, when I realized that is what I had to do back then. I am the smallest in my family, they are all just average height though. The females, I mean.

Oblomov24 · 14/08/2024 21:40

Me too. Small. Rubbish.

Needmorelego · 14/08/2024 21:40

5 ft here. It sucks.
My poor daughter has it worse. 4 ft 10 and has likely stopped growing.
She could start learning to drive next year when she turns 17 but I fear she'd be like this....

To think being short is mostly rubbish!
OooPourUsACupLove · 14/08/2024 21:41

5 1.5 and I will die on the hill of that 0.5 inch!

Yes to all the above, good and bad.

Adding - high bar stools. I can't just sit on one, I have to sort of backwards-climb up it. And then I can't pull in into the bar and have to do a bounce bounce bounce thing.

Ski trousers are always too long and you can't just shorten them like normal clothes.

One really good thing happened at work though - we got sit-stand desks and I discovered they went down extra low. I can now sit with my feet on the floor at work. OMG revelation! 20 years of neck shoulder and back pain gone!
