To think being short is mostly rubbish!

For context…. I’m 4ft 11. And it’s rubbish! Here is why -

  • Food! I can only eat about 1500-1700 a day. I exercise a lot, I try to be healthy but a couple of biscuits and boom, I’m a fatty!
  • Food no.2..eating out.. If I have a main meal then a pudding it can be more than my daily allowance.
  • Gaining weight! One tiny bit of weight and I’m a fatty. And it’s far easier to gain then loose!
  • Alcohol - I just can’t handle it. I’m a ‘cheap date’ but who wants to be drunk on one glass of wine!!
  • Cloths - they just don’t fit! At 14 I got a sewing machine so I could take up all my jeans but often it’s not just the length. The curves and shape just doesn’t fit!
  • Cloths no.2 - short person, little feet! I used to be a size 3, now most size 3 are too big! And 2.5 are less common.
  • Respect.Im an adult, a full on grown up but I constantly feel younger than I am because often feel like people treat me that way. I’m sure there is a statistic about career success and hight/earnings (tall people do better)
  • Running! A 5k for me is a LOT longer than a 5k for someone with longer legs!!
  • Supermarkets - why put things so high up!!
  • People thinking I’m ‘cute’ if I was me, but taller, I wouldn’t be cute.
  • concerts - I can’t see. Any group of people and I’m stuck looking at people’s backs.
  • nose in armpits on busy public transport.

Im sure there are more!!

I also suspect being taller than average is equally rubbish - public transport seats, cloths not long enough etc (but could eat soooo much food!!)

I'm the same size
There are disadvantages and I have the same experience with a lot of the things you say but at the same time I'm ok with my size

heatdeath · 14/08/2024 22:01

Not being able to adjust the driving position to get comfortable/feet reach the pedals - looking like a giant toddler when driving & having crap visibility.

Not being able to reach anything high or deep - I fell in a crate once.

I've spent too many years on my feet in extremely high heels.

The inability to put my feet on the floor when sitting has been mortifying at times (thinking of a job interview when my perch on the edge of a wheeled desk chair spun it out from underneath me & I ended up on my arse on the floor).

Having to use 1/2 or 3/4 size kids sports equipment, & I have real problems with various gym equipment.

Not being able to walk holding hands with my husband without serious arm/shoulder strain.

Men who think I'm cute.

Looking out of place in any group photo with average sized people (lots of my friends are really tall - I always look like I've been photoshopped in).

StickyStones · 14/08/2024 22:05

I'm 5'0, I hear you. It's a pain in the ass.

Another I'll add to your list:
Playing an instrument can be a nightmare for small hands, I can barely reach an octave on the piano 😢

But on the upside:
Yes, gaining weight is obvious very quickly and there's no place to hide, however, when you lose 5lbs it's also very noticeable- it goes both ways for us shorties.

I used to think the same about running and our little legs and I put my poor times down to having to take so many more steps 😂, but I was watching the olympics and the winner in the 10k and 5k is only 5'0! en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beatrice_Chebet

Most of the longer distance runners were in and around that height, but weighed about 40kg!

coffeeandsleep · 14/08/2024 22:05

I’m 4’11 and agree with everything you’ve said.

I also have big boobs so look way bigger than I actually am.

The hardest thing is the lifelong struggle to maintain a healthy weight and have a slim physique. When I have managed, I’ve had to be extremely strict about diet and exercise to the point where it’s taking over my life and it’s not enjoyable. It’s hard when you enjoy food and also my DH is 6 foot plus so can eat way more than me. The number of calories I would need to eat in a day could easily be consumed in one meal!

Justsewsew · 14/08/2024 22:06

I'm getting more annoyed with my height the older I get. I have to use a step stool to reach the top shelf of my fridge and don't have enough low cupboards to keep everything in my reach. I'm sick of it now - I don't think i'm going to get any taller than 5ft as I am now 57 🤔. 34h bra size and look fatter because my boobs are nearly at my waist. My poor old mum is now about 4ft (no exaggeration) as she has shrunk as she gets older.

jonnyjanetkeogh · 14/08/2024 22:08

I'm short but overall I like it. I used to want to be tall but as I've got older I've come to love my height- or lack thereof. I don't care about people calling me cute despite being middle aged at this point, it says more about them than it does about me. I'm a successful business owner, respected in my field and I know my own worth. People calling me cute doesn't take any of that away. I buy petite clothes, kids shoes. I enjoy being small. Yes the calories thing is a pain but I try not to overthink it. If I'm out for dinner it's a treat so I don't focus on it being over my allowance etc- it's not like I'm out for dinner every single week. Being short is the best, wouldn't change it but everyone's different I guess.

orangegato · 14/08/2024 22:08

Only seeing eyebrows in the mirror
Nearly dislocating shoulder opening windows
Driving, can’t see shit
Legs dangling from chairs
No clothes arriving ever that look like they do on the models
Basically programmed to be fat at calorie allowance is that of a child

CobaltQueen · 14/08/2024 22:11

I'm 5ft 3 and around 9 stone 4.
I used to weigh a stone less and was defined as petite. I actually liked it but hated it as a teen. I weigh more now so definitely not described as petite like I was for years. Good old age.....

78Summer · 14/08/2024 22:11

An amusing thread. I am five feet. Quite happy with it now I am in my 40s.
At work I worked with three women who were all nearly six feet, they would actually measure each other with a tape measure, and one would yell every morning ‘good morning little person’ - until I asked her to stop. I did feel bullied.
Being on the tube is annoying as you are essentially in someone’s armpit.
And I notice at work a lot of leaders are taller so I have had to work on being taken seriously.
My legs may be short but at least they work! I always count my blessings.

What can stop shrinkage? Not everyone shrinks lots surely? But my nan ended up level with my boobs and im just below 5 foot! I don't want to shrink like that!

coxesorangepippin · 14/08/2024 21:29

Totally agree

And I'm 5'5!!!

Thing that bothers me the most is so few calories

You are not short in any sense of the word so you have no idea what you are talking about. I hate these threads where someone of average height or more breezes in like this. YOU ARE NOT SHORT.

I'm 5 ft 1 and hear your pain OP.

Towelin · 14/08/2024 22:13

Struggling to be able to reach up high enough to get the hand held bits of the ski machine in the gym.

The skier handily has hooks to place the hand bits back half way down, easily in reachable distance. But no one ever does.

changedusernameforthis1 · 14/08/2024 22:15

Yes! I'm 4'7" and today we took the kids out. Got seated in the taxi and went to buckle youngest in, but the taxi driver opened the door and went "It's fine, I've got it for you sweetheart." I thought it was just me, but a few minutes into the journey he told DW that she was brave to take all four kids to the cinema.
We have three kids.

Then other days people barely glance at me when I'm buying a bottle of wine. For context, I'm 34 and I definitely don't think I look under 18 anymore! 😂

HRTQueen · 14/08/2024 22:16

There is another annoyance the bigger shopping trollies can’t remember which shop it is but they are so deep I worry I am going to loose my balance when emptying the trolley and fall in

but apart from a few annoyances I love being small

purpleme12 · 14/08/2024 22:16

I bought my child a t-shirt in age 11-12
I'm considering keeping it for myself now
I'm not a teeny tiny person. I know the only reason I can wear it is because I'm short.
It's a bit tight around the boobs 😂 but it's ok fit apart from that!

(I should say that I don't normally fit/look good in kids clothes cos I gave a grown up body shape 😂)

systemicmotivations · 14/08/2024 22:16

Out of interest does 5'2" count as short? Asking as it's a bone of contention among a few of my friends (we vary between 4'10" and 5'3" or thereabouts)

heymammy · 14/08/2024 22:18

Having to clamber onto the kitchen sides to reach things in the top cupboards.

I hate hate hate being short and have quite an inferiority complex because of it 😒

SillySausageSandwich · 14/08/2024 22:18

@StickyStones Thats really interesting! I’ve been watching the olympics and felt like they all look tall! But then, if they’re really slim it could be an optical illusion.

I tend to be a HIIT work out person or yoga… might try running. I tried spin recently and struggled with the seat hight!

But this isn't short is it

Clementine22 · 14/08/2024 22:18

Noooo … I’m 5ft 10 and would love to be petite.

Being tall is awkward for a woman, you feel like lurch, people in shops are always asking you to get them things off of the top shelf and sometimes you feel like your standing out like a sore thumb.

Flights are uncomfortable because there’s no leg room, you centre of balance is higher meaning for me I’m clumsy.… it’s just not that great!

CobaltQueen · 14/08/2024 22:19

People can be patronising as well. I had a super tall older guy at work say to me 'You're a tiny little thing'.
Wish I had said something now. I was 32 at the time.

RandomMess · 14/08/2024 22:20

Years of seats being too deep has given me back issues.

Drivers seat in the car always too deep and am too close the steering wheel for air bag safety. Just learnt about peddle extenders so ought to invest in them.

So many already mentioned!

Standing at a concert I could the blokes in front of me talking the whole way through as the music went straight over the top.

Zow · 14/08/2024 22:20

I agree. And I am a bit taller than you (5 ft 2!) I hate it, and would love to be 5 ft 7 to 5 ft 8! The worst thing about it for me, is (as you said,) the inability to carry any extra weight. I look proper chubby at just a stone overweight. My 5 ft 9" friend can put on 4 stone and still look glamorous and willowy with her tallness, and her long bloody legs. FML! 😆

PolkaStripeShirt · 14/08/2024 22:21

Tall men seem to love dating shorter women so there is that.

78Summer · 14/08/2024 22:21

I was heartened to read the fabulous Olympic gymnast Simone Biles is 4 feet 8.
