To think being short is mostly rubbish!

For context…. I’m 4ft 11. And it’s rubbish! Here is why -

  • Food! I can only eat about 1500-1700 a day. I exercise a lot, I try to be healthy but a couple of biscuits and boom, I’m a fatty!
  • Food no.2..eating out.. If I have a main meal then a pudding it can be more than my daily allowance.
  • Gaining weight! One tiny bit of weight and I’m a fatty. And it’s far easier to gain then loose!
  • Alcohol - I just can’t handle it. I’m a ‘cheap date’ but who wants to be drunk on one glass of wine!!
  • Cloths - they just don’t fit! At 14 I got a sewing machine so I could take up all my jeans but often it’s not just the length. The curves and shape just doesn’t fit!
  • Cloths no.2 - short person, little feet! I used to be a size 3, now most size 3 are too big! And 2.5 are less common.
  • Respect.Im an adult, a full on grown up but I constantly feel younger than I am because often feel like people treat me that way. I’m sure there is a statistic about career success and hight/earnings (tall people do better)
  • Running! A 5k for me is a LOT longer than a 5k for someone with longer legs!!
  • Supermarkets - why put things so high up!!
  • People thinking I’m ‘cute’ if I was me, but taller, I wouldn’t be cute.
  • concerts - I can’t see. Any group of people and I’m stuck looking at people’s backs.
  • nose in armpits on busy public transport.

Im sure there are more!!

I also suspect being taller than average is equally rubbish - public transport seats, cloths not long enough etc (but could eat soooo much food!!)

I can only eat 900 calories now (as a short AND menopausal woman) without putting weight on

That's insanely hard and my choice is either weight loss injections forever or being fat 🤷‍♀️

CharlotteLucas3 · 14/08/2024 22:49

I’m 5’ 0.5” and it doesn’t really bother me. I don’t like it when I take my shoes off and people say “Ooh aren’t you small” and occasionally a taller person will think they’re superior. I’ve got a small camper van and I can almost stand up in it without putting the pop top up! I am petite though so i guess from a distance I don’t look short and I love my size 36 feet.

ItsNotUnusualToBe · 14/08/2024 22:49

I specifically told the builder that I am 5 foot 1 and he is six foot and pointed to the preferred mirror placement. I also told the electrician. And still they fucked up. Yes they moved it but never filled in the holes 🙃🤡

To think being short is mostly rubbish!
Futurascope · 14/08/2024 22:49

Also too scared to use a drive through incase I can’t reach to pay/take the food!

ALunchbox · 14/08/2024 22:49

I'm 5 ft2 and like it this way but I may have felt differently if I'd been shorter.

Beginningless · 14/08/2024 22:50

Not rtft so am sure someone else has said it, but what the chat about ‘a fatty’, not enjoying that turn of phrase at all. Otherwise, as you were. Sorry for your troubles.

RunsWithDinosaurs · 14/08/2024 22:59

All you shorties with your tiny feet. 5’3” here with massive feet and hands. I can’t even get the more choice in the sales benefit from being short.

Mmm I've never found I've had more choice in a sale

Newbie8918 · 14/08/2024 23:01

4.10.5 here.

I've grown to love it (or learned to live with it)

I agree with the downsides but let's balance it out with some positives-

At a size 36, I can buy kids shoes
More room on planes, trains
King size beds are tremendous
I can lie down in most bath tubs
People think I'm younger than I am
I can easily weave through crowds and often get pushed to the front in gigs or at the bar

MadKittenWoman · 14/08/2024 23:02

Height 4" 9", bra size 30G, shoe size 1.5 / EU 34. Nightmare.

needanewername · 14/08/2024 23:03

Yes this is me too, 4 ft 10 and I hate it.

In Tesco every single thing I want to buy necessitates climbing on the shelving units (whereas not so in Waitrose, maybe my product choices are more mainstream there as I know the most popular products are supposedly placed mid-height). I particularly hate loose fruit and vegetables where I can only reach the very inferior produce costing the same as those at the top.

My measurements for sleeve and back length are those of a 10-12 year old girl so jackets and shirts for that age range would be great if they weren’t straining across the chest.

Very luckily my feet scrape into being adult size 3 for at least some shoe brands so I do have a good choice of sale items while also being able to buy trainers etc in the youth range.

My boyfriend bought me an electric mountain bike as a present; I naively thought that a small-size step through frame would be possible to ride, if not ideal, with the seat all the way down. Not so: I can manage to start off fine if I position the pedals correctly but straddling the frame my legs are too short to touch the ground on both sides even on tiptoe so unless there’s a very favourable camber dismounting requires allowing the bike to fall which isn’t ideal if there’s other traffic! Apparently there isn’t much demand for this type of bike in a children’s size.

SkiingIsHeaven · 14/08/2024 23:12

Seatbelts cut my throat

Bar stools are really uncomfortable because your feet don't reach the foot rest.

KimberleyClark · 14/08/2024 23:14

5ft 2. Ithink short people look more youthful as they age. Tall people can start to look a bit cadaverous.

Rainallnight · 14/08/2024 23:18

All of the weight comments are really interesting. I got away with murder for most of my life, I think due to a good metabolism, but have really piled it on in my 40s. I’ve been really self critical and blaming myself for being greedy but maybe it’s just my height!

Im doing WeightWatchers now and it’s finally coming off but it’s dawning on me that I’ll have to stay on it for life…

Likemyjealouseel · 14/08/2024 23:26

Shorter people have a lower cancer risk if it’s any consolation (because you have fewer cells)

itsallabitofamystery · 14/08/2024 23:28

This thread makes me sad for my daughter. She's been under paediatrics for two years due to a long term condition (unrelated), but as they weigh and measure her every month we know she has only grown half an inch in that time. Shoe size has stayed the same. Her consultants are therefore satisfied that she has done growing at 5ft 1. I'm 5ft 6, her dad 5ft 8 so we're hardly giants but she hates being so short. Her much younger sister is already the same height so will grow taller. Reading these comments makes me feel quite worried about how she will feel growing older (she's currently 16).

Perpetuallydaisy · 14/08/2024 23:34

I really like being short, just not how the human world is designed for taller people (probably because it's mostly designed for men).

I'm a similar height to your daughter, please do not worry. Yes some things can be tricky like some people have mentioned on this thread but it really isn't something that impacts me enough to bother me. Mostly I like being short. It's all in the attitude we choose to have about our height. Your daughter will be fine and there are definitely pluses to being short too! One tip I wish I'd had decades ago though is that driving an automatic helps loads. Not having to deal with a clutch pedal has made my seat adjustment way easier when driving! Much comfier.

Smartiepants79 · 14/08/2024 23:47

I’m 5’2’’ size 3 feet. I quite like being short.
I don’t have the issues you seem
to have with food.
Clothes are often too long which can be annoying but I’m quite good at shortening stuff now if no petite version on offer.
The concert thing is a pain but I don’t go to many standing things anyway.
I love my small feet as I can buy cheap kids shoes!

MercianQueen · 14/08/2024 23:52

Stiles (and most steps) are not made for the stumpy of leg.

Jimmyneutronsforehead · 15/08/2024 00:45

4'11 and I agree.

I used to work for a coffee franchise that rhymes with shmarshmucks, and the store I worked in has these silly high shelves, I could never stack things on properly, I'd never be able to push things on enough so the blue rolls used to drop off and fall in the sink or the merch used to get knocked off the edge of shelves easily, and don't get me started about the cramped stock room that had no ladders.

It really slowed down what I was capable of doing at work, and that impacted how others viewed my performance.

Also my nipples are door latch height. I wish I could afford to have them surgically removed now they've served their purpose. Useless bloody nipples.

MooseBeTimeForSnow · 15/08/2024 03:09

I’m 5’3”. Whilst I can see over the steering wheel of my car, the goddamn sun visor is too high up. Add in astigmatism and I can see all when there’s a low sun.

“Short girls with astigmatism ride! But not at dawn or dusk”

LostittoBostik · 15/08/2024 03:15

All of these! I'm 5ft, in my forties and still hate it.

Particularly clothes (although I've finally admitted I have to cash up for petite sizing now), and the food situation. It's got worse since I've got older. My healthiest weight is about 8st 1lb. I'm currently 8st 9lb and have so many back rolls.

Also hate the being patronised, although that's calmed down since my face filled with wrinkles. I'm the only women I know who doesn't hate ageing 🤣

LostittoBostik · 15/08/2024 03:17

Needmorelego · 14/08/2024 21:40

5 ft here. It sucks.
My poor daughter has it worse. 4 ft 10 and has likely stopped growing.
She could start learning to drive next year when she turns 17 but I fear she'd be like this....

I didn't stop growing til I was 21! I definitely added an extra inch at uni, I was so pleased 😂

Still an absolute shortarse

tuttuttutt · 15/08/2024 03:18

I'm 5 foot 1 and it's never bothered me. Apart from reaching high shelves. More choice and comfort with cars. Never had to worry about leg room. I don't feel any more vulnerable than a taller woman. Sure clothes are a bit longer but so what.
