To think being short is mostly rubbish!

For context…. I’m 4ft 11. And it’s rubbish! Here is why -

  • Food! I can only eat about 1500-1700 a day. I exercise a lot, I try to be healthy but a couple of biscuits and boom, I’m a fatty!
  • Food no.2..eating out.. If I have a main meal then a pudding it can be more than my daily allowance.
  • Gaining weight! One tiny bit of weight and I’m a fatty. And it’s far easier to gain then loose!
  • Alcohol - I just can’t handle it. I’m a ‘cheap date’ but who wants to be drunk on one glass of wine!!
  • Cloths - they just don’t fit! At 14 I got a sewing machine so I could take up all my jeans but often it’s not just the length. The curves and shape just doesn’t fit!
  • Cloths no.2 - short person, little feet! I used to be a size 3, now most size 3 are too big! And 2.5 are less common.
  • Respect.Im an adult, a full on grown up but I constantly feel younger than I am because often feel like people treat me that way. I’m sure there is a statistic about career success and hight/earnings (tall people do better)
  • Running! A 5k for me is a LOT longer than a 5k for someone with longer legs!!
  • Supermarkets - why put things so high up!!
  • People thinking I’m ‘cute’ if I was me, but taller, I wouldn’t be cute.
  • concerts - I can’t see. Any group of people and I’m stuck looking at people’s backs.
  • nose in armpits on busy public transport.

Im sure there are more!!

I also suspect being taller than average is equally rubbish - public transport seats, cloths not long enough etc (but could eat soooo much food!!)

Although I do enjoy being able to buy trainers from the kids section to save myself some money 😂.

I got green ones in the Next sale - £9.50 in the boys section ! also buy Junior sized trainers - not women's ones.

Oh I forgot the chat up lines - my 'favourite' - being told he liked short women because 'if you couldn;t pick it up and throw it on the bed it wasn't worth shagging' - yeah that was nice

Needmorelego · 14/08/2024 21:41

I'm getting very close to buying a grabbing stick for when I go to the supermarket.
Stupid top shelves.....

JaceLancs · 14/08/2024 21:42

I look awful in any type of jumpsuit, maxi or midi dress, waistlines are always in the wrong place
I am short in the body v leg length so bras are nearly at my waist and anything other than plunge style digs in if wired or shows unless I wear a higher neckline
As I’m busty - high necklines just make me look like a block shape
Overweight unless I eat like a sparrow
Positives I can buy very cheap or even children’s shoes - especially designer bargains
I have dainty hands and love my rings and having my nails done
People (not just men) want to protect, help or generally look after me

heatdeath · 14/08/2024 21:42

YANBU - I'm just over 5ft & you've summed it up pretty well.

I can never exercise enough to be able to eat anything like a normal adult diet without instant fatness - put on 3lbs & you feel gargantuan. Nothing EVER fits - you can shorten trousers & skirts but they just look wrong - waist in the wrong place, shoulders in the wrong place, sleeves ridiculously long etc. I have the added curse of being short waisted with big tits ... it's just crap. I also hate never being able to sit back on a chair because my legs dangle & I feel infantile.

I really dislike being short.

SummerBarbecues · 14/08/2024 21:43

StoneofDestiny · 14/08/2024 21:19

Surely
you get more leg room on flights, at cinemas and theatre
You can lie full length on the settee
your feet never stick out the bottom of the bed
In the rain, your brolly will not be taking other people's eyes out when walking
You can jump the queue without being noticed

On flights, my legs don't reach the floor. It's quite tiring on my legs. I am late 40s and they used to have leg rests on seats. They don't do any more. I have to make sure I bring a handbag that doubles as a foot rest.

SillySausageSandwich · 14/08/2024 21:43

@OooPourUsACupLove I find wetsuits are the same.

and now, I need to look for a desk!! I have a little stool but I’d prefer the floor.

Yep I wouldn’t like being that short. Being tall is not a picnic either I can tell you. 5ft 10 here. I think about 5ft 6 is probably ideal.

ghostyslovesheets · 14/08/2024 21:44

Adding - high bar stools. I can't just sit on one, I have to sort of backwards-climb up it. And then I can't pull in into the bar and have to do a bounce bounce bounce thing

OH yes - there is a photo of my on my birthday, it's actually a lovely pic, in a fancy cocktail bar. We where on high stools at a high table, I had got down and I'm stood - thinking I look glam, I look like a bloody borrower!

SummerBarbecues · 14/08/2024 21:44

I started sewing to take up trousers too! I've now learned to sew so I can make clothes that fit properly.

ActionNeeded · 14/08/2024 21:44

In shops, I ask people ‘can I borrow your vertical advantage?’ if I need something from high up 😂

LyndaSnellsSniff · 14/08/2024 21:46

I have a friend who is 4' 11" and when her nephew was very young he was shocked to discover she was allowed to use the cooker without adult supervision! 🤣

RishiIsACuntWaffle · 14/08/2024 21:47

Nearly killing yourself getting giant toddler out of cot (one where sides did not lower).

Said giant child being a foot taller than me age 14..ffs.

However being able to fit easily in beds and baths and plane seats is good.

Gabby10 · 14/08/2024 21:47

I hate supermarket shelves and I absolutely refuse to ask for help- I also struggle to reach the bottom of the big trolleys when trying to unpack 😂. In general terms I like being short it's just certain things I can't do that actually make me rage! Although when I'm pissed off people always come out with 'god your so cute when you're angry' yeah great way to stop me being wound up- not! 😂

SillySausageSandwich · 14/08/2024 21:48

@heatdeath Yes! 3lb and I’m a balloon! My colleague is on a diet and has lost 12lb in a month… I was amazed! I’d need to not eat anything to do that.

Yep, boobs. I’m a 30DD. So not only impossible to buy, but also… makes me look fatter than I am.

Oh yes - ditto not being able to use proper shopping trollies because you can't reach the things at the bottom when unpacking

Needmorelego · 14/08/2024 21:49

@RishiIsACuntWaffle I had to ask the security chap to get my (then toddler) girl out the trolley seat at the supermarket because I just couldn't lift her high enough 😂

SillySausageSandwich · 14/08/2024 21:50

@LyndaSnellsSniff ohhh that’s brilliant!!!!

OP posts:
Needmorelego · 14/08/2024 21:50

Also have been known to practically fall into a full size trolley while trying to reach whatever is at the bottom 😂

Milkandtwosugarsplease · 14/08/2024 21:51

This is really interesting to read. I don’t know if I’m lucky or just see it totally differently.
I’m 5”1 and genuinely love my height. The weight thing is shit but that’s the only real negative for me. My clothes are either kids tracksuits or midi dresses which are the perfect maxi on me. Travelling, I find easier because I’ve got more space to manoeuvre into a comfortable position. I climb or ask for help in supermarkets and I have a cushion in my car and an adjustable seat. Professionally, no one has ever not taken me seriously because of my height.

ghostyslovesheets · 14/08/2024 21:51

When the kids were babies - trying to use one of those car seat trolleys but not being able to see over the top!

also trying a baby sling with DD3 to try and have my hands free and banging her head on the kitchen counter tops

Whaleandsnail6 · 14/08/2024 21:51

I agree with everything you have said! I'm 5ft and I'm sick of it (not that I can change it 🤣). I'd absolutely love to be 6 inches taller. I also have horrible dumpy legs, I'm so jealous of people with lovely long legs.

SummerBarbecues · 14/08/2024 21:52

Second the PP who mentioned standing desks. Some of them go lower than standard desks. I got one and now I don't need a foot rest anymore. I much prefer working from home because I have set up my computer area for a shortie like me.

greenwoodentablelegs · 14/08/2024 21:52

Come on people ! Short and loving it !

ok standing desk plus a balance board. Makes work more fun.

startstopengine · 14/08/2024 21:55

But us shorties when we get older look younger than our actual age.

I'm 5'1 the weight is always an issues feeling dumpy not petite.

But everything else I love.

SillySausageSandwich · 14/08/2024 21:56

Well…. I didn’t expect my shortie moan to result in me looking for a new desk…. But that’s absolutely what I’m all about now!

I think 5’4 5’6 would be nice. Cloths would fit better.
