To pretend they don’t know who trashy celebs are?

I think the whole MM news has highlighted it. But I notice it all the time on social media media when there is something about say the Kardashians and you get a comment saying “who?”

Now to be clear I don’t follow this type of celebrity and I have never watched a single episode of the Kardashians in my life - but I find it impossible that anybody under 60 doesn’t know who they are.

why do people do this?

You are so missing the point. I’m not saying you have to watch what I watch or listen to what I listen to.

My point is I don’t listen to Taylor Swift but know who she is. I don’t watch football but know who Lionel Messi.

Because it’s almost impossible not to.

I can promise you my teenager has no idea who Tom Hanks is. I am kinda embarrassed about that.

We don't read those news stories, and if we do, we don't bother to save the information in our brains, because it's clearly useless.

If you asked my parents they would not have a clue who they were, I would not say it is impossible at all.

Believe it or not, OP, there are people in the world who don't care about this sort of stuff. I genuinely don't know who most of them are.

I’m in my 30’s and have literally never heard of Molly Mae before seeing her name pop up on MN threads today. Not a clue who she is. I’ve of course heard of the Kardashians, couldn’t tell you which is which or anything more than that they’re a rich reality tv family.

I’m 42 and have no idea who MM or Tommy Fury are. And I do use Facebook a fair bit (obviously too uncool to use Insta or Tiktok much). I assume people who know who they are are probably under 20. I couldn’t care less who most celebs other than comedians or musicians are. You know, the ones with talent 😂

In the time it takes to type 'who is that?' they could google it!

My first thought when you wrote MM was actually Meghan Markle (just because those initials are mainly used to describe her) even though I think it would be mean to call her a trashy celeb. Most of my family wouldn’t have a clue who Molly Mae is! I don’t really follow news about her or Tommy Fury.

I have to say, I was quite sad to hear they’d broken up. It is sad news, as it would be for anyone, and I do like Tommy Fury. I think Molly Mae is okay, but I don’t like comments she’s said in the past (about how everyone ‘has the same 24 hours’ etc etc), and found them quite thoughtless, so that’s probably unfairly affected my perception of her.

I'm in my 30s. I know the Kardashians are the children of OJ Simpsons laywer who got famous in their own right via a reality TV show. I would recognise a picture of Kim. I wouldn't recognise Khloe (though I know how she spells her name) or any of the others, who I can't name. I might recognise the mum.
I don't have a TV, but I watch comedies (and basically nothing else) online. I don't have Instagram, tik tok, or Snapchat. I have Facebook, which I use to keep up with family and to be part of groups mostly related to parenting, DIY, and outdoor pursuits.
I'm not remotely cool. I'm just interested in what I'm interested in, and that's not celebrity culture or reality TV. I think I'd probably be cooler if it was 🤷🏼‍♀️

You just keep naming very famous people and telling us that because lots of us have heard of the very famous people, we must somehow magically know who the slightly famous person is. We don't.

Kardashians, yes obviously know their names even though not watched.

Its not deliberate because they’re “trashy” (if they are) but I just don’t have the capacity to follow all that as well as work, kids and stuff I really want to know about.

I know Kardashians exist, but I don't actually see them doing anything, so I don't really know anything about them.

I'm guessing MM is the Molly Mae person there were some news articles about today. I don't know who she is or what she's famous for, but the headlines seemed to be saying she's had a relationship end. That's usually not a fun thing, so I hope she gets whatever needs sorting, sorted, and that she has supports around her.

The original point is that the OP thinks that people who say they don’t know who Molly Mae or the Kardashians are, are lying for effect.

People are posting on here to say that they don’t know who Molly Mae is, and their knowledge of the Kardashians is sketchy at best, and that they aren’t lying.

I wouldn’t put Molly Mae and Tommy Fury on the same fame level as the other people you’ve mentioned OP - e.g. Ronaldo, Taylor Swift etc. They don’t have a global level of fame like Ronaldo or Taylor Swift.

Kardashians - I know a little because my best friend likes and talks about them

Taylor Swift - yes, because I like most kinds of music and listen a lot

Cristiano Ronaldo - yes, because I’m a football fan

Tom Hanks - yes, because I watch Hollywood movies
