Why do people think it’s cool?

Emz1212 · 14/08/2024 20:15

To pretend they don’t know who trashy celebs are?

I think the whole MM news has highlighted it. But I notice it all the time on social media media when there is something about say the Kardashians and you get a comment saying “who?”

Now to be clear I don’t follow this type of celebrity and I have never watched a single episode of the Kardashians in my life - but I find it impossible that anybody under 60 doesn’t know who they are.

why do people do this?

Icanttakethisanymore · 14/08/2024 21:09

I have 2 small kids and a full time job. I don’t have time to watch tv. I’ve no idea who Moly mae is, I don’t think that’s cool, it’s simply a fact. I do know who the kardashisns are but I have never watched any of their shows.

LiterallyOnFire · 14/08/2024 21:09

Because there are some people who it’s almost impossible not to have heard of.

I am not interested in football but I know David Beckham.

This woman today is very clearly not in that fake league.

As evidenced by most people not having a fucking clue who she is or what she's famous for.

Are you her PR rep? This thread is completely mental.

Borris · 14/08/2024 21:09

Do you think love islanders are on the same famous scale as trump and beckham?

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 14/08/2024 21:09

Lifeomars · 14/08/2024 21:07

Marilyn Monroe? 😄

Must be, as she's the most famous. I am very surprised to hear that she was going out with Tommy Fury in the first place, let alone that they broke up.

brrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr · 14/08/2024 21:09

I am aware there are people called Kardashian. I have no idea what they look like or what they’ve achieved. I cannot tell them apart, but I am aware there is more than one of them.

CoffeeCakeAndALattePlease · 14/08/2024 21:09

I think it’s often genuine!

Some such as the Kardashian’s I know, but many I’ll have heard the name but not know what they’re from or what they look like. Or I might vaguely recognise someone but not know their name. Etc.

I have no idea who Molly-Mae is or why she’s apparently in the news. This thread is the first I’ve heard of it.

TheOnlyCherryOnMyTree · 14/08/2024 21:09

I'm with you op. I don't know tons about various celebs but I've heard of them and get the gist. I like having well rounded knowledge, my brain is big enough to handle the war in Ukraine, the US elections and Molly Mae splitting from her beau, I don't have to choose. I'm always googling random things and learning useless new information.

LesMisSaigon · 14/08/2024 21:10

Emz1212 · 14/08/2024 21:04

That’s not what I’m saying. I’m saying there are people so famous it’s almost impossible to not know who they are.

I don’t listen to Taylor Swift, I couldn’t name one album of hers, but I absolutely know who she is.

@Emz1212 I admit to having heard of Taylor Swift, I am not sure Mollie Mae and her partner are quite in her league!

Underlig · 14/08/2024 21:10

Emz1212 · 14/08/2024 21:07

Because there are some people who it’s almost impossible not to have heard of.

I am not interested in football but I know David Beckham.

I am not interested in US politics - but I know Donald Trump.

But those people have actually done something to be famous for. That’s why people will have heard of them. What do the Kardashians do?

Shinyandnew1 · 14/08/2024 21:10

I think the whole MM news has highlighted it.

I have just searched for who you are talking about and had never heard of either of them. I am in my 40s and not pretending!

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 14/08/2024 21:10

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 14/08/2024 21:06

It's been suggested that it's Miriam Margoyles.

Never heard of him.
Is he a footballer?
( It must be the 'My Goalies' that makes me think this.)

sunights · 14/08/2024 21:10

All I know about the Kardishans is that a Dad used to be a boxer called Bruce (this stuck in my mind cause Bruce is my Dad's name) and girl in a Pepsi advert that was pulled for cultural appropriation.

And the only MM I can think of is Megan Markle.

I read The Guardian, almost from cover to cover (i.e. not the sport section) and don't watch live or current TV shows cause I don't have time or interest.

I also think I have friends who know even less of this stuff than I do.

Emz1212 · 14/08/2024 21:11

To be clear I’m not putting Molly Mae as somebody who everybody should know - I was making the point that there was a lot of “who’s” on articles today?

But when it comes to the Kardashians, Taylor Swift, Cristiano Ronaldo, Tom Hanks I refuse to believe people haven’t heard of them - even if they don’t know specifics.

Or Marilyn Manson 😎

I agree with that but you are quoting random wannabes from love Island (and I only know that from this thread). Of course people know who trump is, anyone saying they don’t I would not think they are uncool I would think they are a bit thick.

LouH5 · 14/08/2024 21:12

The amount of people who have totally missed the original point is mind blowing. I can’t get over how many people have come on here just to say they don’t know who Molly Mae is 🤦🏻‍♀️

SevenMarshmallows · 14/08/2024 21:12

No-one 'needs' to post anything on MN. Most threads are full of people saying one or two things, slightly reworded. Some of them will continue to chime in just to say that they've never heard of (fill in the blank), either to signal their superiority or because they want to participate in the discussion and have nothing else to add. Anyone annoyed by this quirk is most likely annoying someone else in some other way.

JengaCupboard · 14/08/2024 21:12

I had to Google who they were but don’t watch any sort of reality tv at all so. I know who Tyson Fury is tho..

I don’t think people necessarily pretend, I think the majority of people probably just don’t engage with ‘trashy celebrity’ as you say. It seems to appeal to a reasonably narrow demographic..

Emz1212 · 14/08/2024 21:12

Underlig · 14/08/2024 21:10

That probably highlights my point - I couldn’t tell you one brand that the Kardashians promote - but I have heard of them. It’s almost impossible not to have.

OP posts:
mambojambodothetango · 14/08/2024 21:13

I'm well under 60 and know very few celebrities. I know of the Kardashians but nothing about them other than they're a rich family on the tv. I don't watch reality tv or soaps, I don't follow pop music. I know some actors. I'm not bothered in the slightest whether you think that's fake or real ignorance. I'm more concerned that this is something you feel it's worth starting a thread on.

itsgettingweird · 14/08/2024 21:13

I actually genuinely didn't know who they were.

But I googled.

I now know Tommy is the half brother of Tyson.

And a lot about Tyson's mum and lots of miscarriages - the poor woman.

I do know if the Kardashian's. But I don't really know who they are (couldn't name them!) or what they do beyond they did a reality tv show?

Flavabobble · 14/08/2024 21:13

I'm not cool by a long stretch. I have heard the name Molly-Mae but I don't know what or who she is, or her purpose. I think I've heard of Tommy fury being a boxer.
I do know who the Kardashians are. The dad of some of them defended OJ Simpson and the dad of the others competed against Daley Thompson as a decathlete but now wears dresses.

You're doing life wrong. I'm doing life wrong. We are all doing life wrong.

The correct way is to know what OP knows. Watch what she watches. Read what she reads...Etc. If you pretend you're not her, you're lying.

She must be exhausting IRL if this thread is any clue.

Bruce was a decathlete. I think it is Fury you are thinking of.

I am aware there are people called Kardashian. I have no idea what they look like or what they’ve achieved. I cannot tell them apart, but I am aware there is more than one of them.

They've got kids with funny names. They've got funny names themselves that all start with K. One of them has a make-up brand. One of them was half naked on a motorbike in her DH's music video but her nipples were erased, so that's alright. The dad was an Olympic athlete back in the day and is now a woman. That's about it, I think.
