To pretend they don’t know who trashy celebs are?

I think the whole MM news has highlighted it. But I notice it all the time on social media media when there is something about say the Kardashians and you get a comment saying “who?”

Now to be clear I don’t follow this type of celebrity and I have never watched a single episode of the Kardashians in my life - but I find it impossible that anybody under 60 doesn’t know who they are.

why do people do this?

I’ve heard of the Kardashians but I wouldn’t be able to pick them out of a lineup, and nor am I sure of their individual names. I know some people who definitely won’t have heard of them. The only MM I would think of is Meghan Markle.

I know it's hard for some people to understand, but if you don't watch Love Island or read the Daily Mail you won't know who all these z list celebs are. As a PP said, I was shocked so many people didn't have a clue about politicians during the election. It depends what you're interested in. I've heard of the Kardashians but I've never watched them and couldn't name them all. That's not me trying to be smug I just have no interest in them.

I don’t listen to Taylor Swift, I couldn’t name one album of hers, but I absolutely know who she is.

I am proper old and know who they all are. I know more about the Kardashians because I wasn't even that old when they started out. I was surprised to see that the Molly Mae thing was on the main news this evening. Guess my oldness is reflected in the way I just wonder why and how they are all so rich and famous as most of them do not have any discernable talent other than self promotion via reality t v and social media.

I have no idea who anyone is, and I'm not at all cool.

Not sure who mm is unless it's Meghan markle? I don't watch celebrity programmes or stuff like love island nor read magazines other than private eye. We all know different things, I can name you the capitals of nearly every country in the world, every state in America and a thorough history of canon law but Tommy Fury, no idea

Yes there are some that famous - Madonna, Brad Pitt, David Beckham ... reality stars don't fall into that band

Why do you find it hard to believe I don’t know who these people are? If their faces popped up in front of me right now, I would not have a clue and the reason is because I am not interested, why is that unbelievable? I am uncool? Your post is very weird.

I have heard of the Kardashians but don't know how many of them are or what any of them do. Or are they just famous for being kardashians. Is one called Chloe and one called Kylie?
I now realise from this thread that Molly Mar was on love Island but I've never watched it. Also font know who Tysoe fury is but feel like I should the name feels familiar a boxer or something

In the specific case of Molly Mae, a number of people are, in my view, quite rightly, questioning why her relationship break-up was headline news on the BBC and Sky.

BBC News tells me they were together for 5 years. A celebrity splitting from a boyfriend/fiance of 5 years is not news - even if it was an Oscar-winning A-list film star who 95% of people would know about.

'Who' comments are a pointed protest against this kind of nonsense being treated as news - on another thread, a poster listed far more serious, far reaching, life-and-death events of the day that hadn't made the headlines.

Because there are some people who it’s almost impossible not to have heard of.

Almost certainly true of the Kardashians. Nowhere near true for the zillions of other "celebrities" out there. MM to me is Meghan Markle or Madeleine McCann.

How would people who haven't watched LI know who any of the contestants are?

I honestly had NEVER heard of this woman until I saw a thread on here today. It just means I don't read the Daily Mail, and don't watch whatever it is that has made her "famous".

I am sorry to state the obvious but Taylor Swift is in a slightly different category than this Molly woman. Did Molly do anything of note lately? Wrote a song? Painted a portrait? Won a gold medal at the Olympics? Found a cure for cancer? Starred in a decent movie?
It is perfectly conceivable that someone wouldn't hear of a person who is of no consequence to the general public.
Like one of the PPs, the only two reasons I am aware of the Kardashians are because of the OJ Simpson case and Jenner whom I heard of when she was still Bruce.
