Why do people think it’s cool?

To pretend they don’t know who trashy celebs are?

I think the whole MM news has highlighted it. But I notice it all the time on social media media when there is something about say the Kardashians and you get a comment saying “who?”

Now to be clear I don’t follow this type of celebrity and I have never watched a single episode of the Kardashians in my life - but I find it impossible that anybody under 60 doesn’t know who they are.

why do people do this?

"You're not superior or smarter or more clever than those who watch these shows"

Yeah, except I am. These shows are drivel of the worst kind. Mind numbing nonsense, anyone who is enthralled by them is a numpty.

I’m no fan. But I wouldn’t go that far. It’s not superior to avoid pop culture, it’s just a matter of taste.

Wideskye · 15/08/2024 21:51

I have heard of the Kardashians but wouldn't have a clue what they look like.
I have no interest.
I have never watched love island or the like.
I have no interest.
The only tim^^e I wish I knew more about celebrity culture is at the pub quiz.

Rhaenys · 15/08/2024 21:53

I had heard of Mollie Mae but it’s only now that I’ve found out she originated from Love Island. I thought she was an influencer who hit the big time like Zoella. I knew that she had a baby daughter called Bambi and that she was dating someone who I guessed was somehow related to Tyson Fury.

hiddeneverythin · 15/08/2024 23:09

I can genuinely only name a handful of celebrities. Don’t have a clue who most of the people are that seem to be talked about. I don’t think I’m cool - I just don’t know

BeSpoonyAquaHare · 15/08/2024 23:18

It’s so silly. I saw someone comment on an Instagram story about Taylor swift earlier saying ‘googling “who?”’. Sure Jan, you don’t know who Taylor swift is but you’re commenting anyway to make sure everyone knows.

When I see new stories about people I don’t know (and it happens frequently) I just scroll past. If I don’t know who they are, how could a news story about them be interesting? I’m certainly not going to spend a minute of my precious life smugly announcing to a crowd of profoundly disinterested strangers that I don’t know who the person in question is.

HayNo · 15/08/2024 23:28

It’s not about being cool. I’m 37 and didn’t know who she was or her fella. I have zero interest in these reality TV shows (or even TV these days)

I do find the hysteria around it absolutely weird now I know who she is from newspapers

But to be arsed writing “who” on articles does seem belittling. If it doesn’t interest them, why bother - clearly the article wasn’t meant for them then

Toptops · 15/08/2024 23:43

Never heard of mm.
But I'm well old and don't watch or read celebrity programmes/articles

MillieMinx · 15/08/2024 23:56

HappierTimesAhead · 14/08/2024 20:21

Also, someone might have heard 'Kardashians' but literally know nothing about them or even their level of fame so if they said, "Who are they, I have no idea " then they would be telling the truth. They may not even know why they are famous, what they look like, what their names are. It would still be fairly accurate for them to say they don't know who they are.

What I genuinely don't understand is why it bothers people when people say they've never heard of a celeb (whether they are lying or not).

This is me. I’ve never watched an episode bc I have zero interest. I couldn’t tell you all their names and would not be able to identify which is which! I’m just not into celebrity stuff or “reality” tv shows or influencers and will avoid at all costs. Also I have no idea who MM is 🤷🏻‍♀️ I’m in my early 50’s

Thefsm · 16/08/2024 00:36

I’ve heard of the Kardashians but couldn’t tell you which is which or anything much about them. And there’s loads of celebrities I have no clue about. If someone posts some story about a guy having been arrested for something I don’t think it is unreasonable to ask who he is/ what he’s famous for. Maybe I saw him in a movie but James don’t stick.

WildLemur · 16/08/2024 00:46

I've heard of the Kardashians, could name two of them and maybe write a paragraph of stuff I know about them. I wouldn't be able to pick them out of a lineup, though.

I know who Taylor Swift is, and what she looks like, but I'm not very familiar with her music (I assume I'd recognize some songs if played, and remember the never ever getting back together one).

Had not heard of Molly Mae prior to today, but wouldn't bother "who"-ing in a thread about her in order to demonstrate that.

Am late 30s.

NickyT64 · 16/08/2024 02:01

How about we’re not doing it to be ‘cool’ but we just don’t care about a barely z - list ‘celebrity’ is so haven’t bothered to read all the boring articles about them.
ps- I was thinking you meant Meghan Markle!!!!

Thevelvelletes · 16/08/2024 02:10

Fimbledore · 14/08/2024 20:21

I'm in my fifties and don't know who many current "celebrities" are , including MollyMae. I saw on a thread about her earlier that she was on love island, but I've never watched it.
I'm not pretending to be cool.

Snap..I'm aware of these people because I read the news and the paper's but otherwise not clued up about the ins and outs because I don't watch the shit content they are in.

SuboptimusPrime · 16/08/2024 05:38

I live in the US. I spent 15 months in the UK in 2022/2023. My ex-wife kept trying to make me watch various videos and odd bits of TV. She would say, “Thus is so-and-so…” and I would just look blankly and state, “I have no idea who that is.” I wasn’t trying to be cool. I genuinely don’t know most of what people consider current celebrities. Stormsy, Katie Price, some UK rapper, etc. I’m completely without clue.

I do know of some annoying women with the last name Kardashian. They seem to have made a lot of money for being famous for no particular reason. I know it isn’t talent, unless shopping and makeup is a talent now.

I would have to glue myself to YouTube, the trashy news, and every single (anti)social platform. Not everyone does. My phone is very often sitting idly. I only really have it on me when I’m out. I’m probably part of some new movement that chooses not to be a zombie and a slave to pointless media. Sorry, not sorry.

Fedupofcommodes · 16/08/2024 05:52

Genuinely had never heard of kardashians until about two years after their TV programme started. Don't know who MM is or minions of other celebrities so I really wouldn't be pretending.

Edingril · 16/08/2024 05:59

I thing there is sector of society that need to feel hard done by 'Oh I have so many issues everything other people do is only done to make me feel bad poor me aren't I misunderstood'

If you are feeling bad then give actual examples of what people have done to make you like this not just 'they walked past me now I feel judged as a single parent' or whatever

dreamer24 · 16/08/2024 06:05

My 17 year old daughter informed earlier this week of their split. I'll admit my first reasons was "and??", however I had a vague awareness of MM and could have probably guessed she was famous due to Love Island despite the fact I've never watched it. However I could not have named her partner at all if you'd asked me. That name was new to me. Im in my late 30s so some way under 60. It just does not interest me in the slightest hence why I wouldn't have known who he was.

whichdresshelpplease · 16/08/2024 06:06

*response not reason 😀

mumwheresmyribena · 16/08/2024 08:58

It's about degree of celebness I think. I seldom watch the TV and when I do it's normally on catch-up to watch a documentary or quiz. I don't read magazines or newspapers except the Guardian and Al Jazeera as apps on my phone. The "News" headlines come from the BBC on my phone, it's heavily filtered to give me the actual news, not entertainment or sport news. So although I see stuff about Taylor Swift, Tom Hanks, Tim Walz, even C Ronaldo and many recent music personalities (I like music and tend to at least know the names of recent artists, if not their music) etc and know about them and I've heard of Love island and other reality shows, I wouldn't have a clue about most of the Reality TV contestants or even their celeb contestants.
It's long been a bugbear of mine that many media outlets can't tell the difference between actual, real news and entertainment, it drives me nuts. But there again, I'm over 60. I thought MM stood for "Mass Media", I do know who Meghan Markle is, I just didn't think of her.

Champers66 · 16/08/2024 09:03

OMG!!! I’m sooooo glad you said this! When someone goes ‘who?’ It really annoys me soooo much! They clearly know who they are!!!

Flightsoffancy · 16/08/2024 09:17

I didn't know who you meant by MM - I assumed Michael Mosley, but I couldn't understand the 'cool' aspect of pretending not to know who he was 🤣🤣🤣 For those who thought Meghan Markle, that does make more sense 🤣 Marilyn Monroe probably more on my radar...
I have heard of Molly Mae but wouldn't recognise a photo of her or know who she is. I don't think I'm cool, quite the opposite!

Packetofcrispsplease · 16/08/2024 09:19

I have read some of the comments and when someone mentioned MM is Molly Mae , well I knew who she was but don’t know much about her .
I am old and was waiting in the hairdressers when one girl mentioned that another looked like MM with her new hair do .
I had to google her 😆 as I have never watched Love Island .
I just have different interests and watch different TV .
Now …I do know who Shun and Dai are 😂 because I loved “ The Boyfriend “ on Netflix 😄

ZombieGirl86 · 16/08/2024 09:26

I know who kardashians are because of my kids. Geuinely dont know who most celebs are these days...just dont care. Dont read the news or watch reality tv or structly so, easily?

Whatever123456789 · 16/08/2024 09:26

I live in my own little bubble. I look at mumsnet, facebook, insta, etc but I don't read proper news or watch it. I don't watch reality tv (anymore, used to LOVE big brother in the early days) so while Ive 'heard' most of the names of these slebs... i couldn't pick most of them out of a line up.

And I don't think im cool because of it. It just is what it is...

BTW, I'm in my early 50s with early teen kids

redskydarknight · 16/08/2024 09:27

Champers66 · 16/08/2024 09:03

OMG!!! I’m sooooo glad you said this! When someone goes ‘who?’ It really annoys me soooo much! They clearly know who they are!!!

I actually very nearly replied "who?" to one of those threads. The thread said something along the lines of "Can't believe what's happened to MM!". I assumed it meant Meghan Markle, went off to google what had happened to her (because, I agree, people who seem unable to use Google are annoying) and found nothing noteworthy recently, so was genuinely puzzled.

By the time I'd finished googling, other responders had replied with MM's full name and added Tommy and Love Island as further clues, so I had a bit more to go on (and a teenager nearby to ask).

I do think people starting threads should add context - if for no other reason than because people who are not interested and don't know who they are talking about, then will know not to click on the thread. If the title had been the full names of the people involved with "Love Island" in brackets, I wouldn't even have clicked on it.
