Why do people think it’s cool?

Emz1212 · 14/08/2024 20:15

To pretend they don’t know who trashy celebs are?

I think the whole MM news has highlighted it. But I notice it all the time on social media media when there is something about say the Kardashians and you get a comment saying “who?”

Now to be clear I don’t follow this type of celebrity and I have never watched a single episode of the Kardashians in my life - but I find it impossible that anybody under 60 doesn’t know who they are.

why do people do this?

My DP has become so fed up of the news that he literally doesn’t watch it, turns off the news when it comes on the radio, only watches YouTube videos about traditional crafts and DIY tips Grin and I can absolutely guarantee he wouldn't know who Kamala Harris is or any of the kardashians or Lionel Messi and quite possibly Meghan Markel. He is 60 and has run his own business for years etc etc, functions perfectly normally in most ways.

Kentucky83 · 15/08/2024 18:02

I know names. I know faces. I know songs. I know TV shows. I know all these things because I've heard about them whether I want to or not. But I have little to no interest in most popular culture so I know only the vaguest details and often, if I say 'who's that?' what I mean is 'I vaguely known the name but that's about it.' I'm in my 40s.

ColdWaterDipper · 15/08/2024 18:08

I am in my early 40s and have no clue who most celebrities are. I know there are Kardashians but I wouldn’t be able to pick them out of a line up or know their names or even how many there are. I have no clue who Molly-Mae is (or that MM referred to her before I read some previous comments). I don’t think I’m cool for not knowing, in fact I feel slightly embarrassed when it becomes obvious that my knowledge is lacking, but equally I don’t have the time or will to find out about minor celebrities or follow along with that sort of news. As long as my ignorance doesn’t impact other people I don’t suppose it matters much.

Who or what is MM?

TiredTeaBag · 15/08/2024 18:18

I'm definitely not cool and I only learned who MM was on this thread, and only really from a quick scroll that she has broken up with a fella I'm also unfamiliar with.

I know who the kardashians are but I don't watch reality tv, soaps, read magazines etc., most of my social media is cat videos, baking and for some weird reason i get a lot of videos about hoof care... (absolutely fascinating and i can now spot a white line defect in a cows hoof at 100 yards even though i know naff all about animals generally) and so I do think it's entirely possible for this celebrity stuff to pass you by if you don't engage with these things.

I don't consider this to be any kind of badge of honour, but I'm also not particularly interested in these people.... and no judgement on anyone who loves it either....

TangentsPlease · 15/08/2024 18:18

In my early 30s and no idea who Molly Mae is... I wouldn't necessarily comment on a post and highlight it by saying 'who?' but I genuinely don't know the vast majority of trashy celebs because I'm just not interested. YABU in thinking everyone does.

(I do know who Kim Kardashian is but I don't think I'd recognise the other Kardashians, although I know there's a few of them?)

I genuinely never heard of this woman until today. Different planets, different orbits.

Kjpt140v · 15/08/2024 18:52

Jeez, if this is all you have to worry about, I envy you.

Panjandrum123 · 15/08/2024 18:56

Life is too short to keep up with all the celebrities and wannabes. I always think I’d be a shit Maitre’D because if they turned up at my restaurant expecting a good table I’d have no idea who they were. Happy to keep it that way.

But for those who enjoy Love Island, TOWIE, etc etc crack on.

NoDought · 15/08/2024 19:11

I think people who are going out of their way by commenting 'who?' is to belittle their significance. They likely will know who they are otherwise wouldn't be incensed enough to comment. Like if there was a post about a famous sports person within a certain field but someone didn't follow that sport and therefore didn't know them, I'm sure they would just pass by the article rather than commenting 'who'

Anonymous54 · 15/08/2024 19:12

I don’t know who most of them are, vaguely know the Kardashian’s but only really Kim.
I don’t think it’s ‘cool’ to not know them in the slightest and whilst I completely understand everyone’s right to engage in whatever they want, I feel it mindblowing how few people engage in politics for example. I could argue that these people think that is ‘cool’ and yes I find this v irritating! Because basically everything is politics!

Openthefloodgates · 15/08/2024 19:16

They usually do know but are saying “who” to make it seem it’s beneath them.
But if it was really beneath them, they wouldn’t bother commenting at all!

ObelixtheGaul · 15/08/2024 19:19

Not remotely cool, never watched Love Island, but I do watch 'reality TV'. I know all the regular cast on 'Deadliest Catch' and 'Gold Divers'.

Everlore · 15/08/2024 19:21

I am a little saddened by the comments on this thread which imply that posters can't possibly know about modern celebrities or pop stars because they are interested in some much more worthy subject, this seems to suggest that some people think it is only possible to have one set of interests and that anything outside of that must be inferior or less worthy of appreciation or enjoyment.
I watch very little television, just quiz shows, I mostly listen to Radio 4 and 4 Extra. I'm very interested in literature, history, politics and science and frequently listen to documentaries on these subjects as well as reading voraciously.
However, one of my all-consuming passions is contemporary female pop artists, which means that I avidly follow my favourite artists and their work and listen to Radio 1. I don't consider this to be a less valid or meaningful interest than history or science as this music brings me very great pleasure.
I don't think that the fact that I know a great deal about Taylor Swift and countless other modern pop stars is incompatible with my enjoyment of Natalie Haynes Stands Up for the Classics or The Infinite Monkey Cage. Nor do I think it strange that I can read a great deal of classic and modern literary fiction while still adoring the Harry Potter books with all my heart.
It is possible to have an interest in both so-called high and low-brow culture simultaneously. I have a friend who is a brilliant mathematician but he also follows Love Island avidly. It is perfectly possible and even desirable for people to be interested in a range of varied and often seemingly incongruous subjects and it is unnecessary to belittle someone else's interests in order to bolster one's own intellectual status or demonstrate superior taste.
I am also a keen competitive quizzer so I know the value of learning about a range of subjects, even those outside of one's immediate sphere of interest. Not being able to answer a quiz question because everyone on your team considered the subject matter to be beneath their notice can gift a point to your more open-minded opposition!

But the thread wasn't about anyone in particular, it was about people claiming not to know slebs to appear cool - that's what people are commenting on

MintyNew · 15/08/2024 19:21

Had no idea who she was either. Had a look at her profile and couldn't see anything spectacular either. Just one of the other million 'influencers' with a ridiculous child name.
I thought she was in her 30s too! I genuinely don't know why anyone is supposed to know who she is?

Exactly and I’m saying that they probably do know who they are; they are just saying “who” as if it’s all beneath them

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 15/08/2024 19:28

Why do you care what other people think or whether they know of these people or not? I don't know of them other than the basic that they're famous for something or other as their names keep popping up. Does that make me 'cool'? I couldn't care less for a random's assessment of me, why do you?

If you like/follow these people then who cares? If you feel 'less than' for your interest then that's for you to work on, not other people.

Think for yourself and never mind what other people think.

Openthefloodgates · 15/08/2024 19:27

What does it matter if people do think it's 'beneath them'? It might be, why should that matter to you? Are your own views so flimsy that you can be swayed by what other people think?

If you like a celebrity then so what, it's not news is it? Let other people not know of them or if they do, not like them. Why on earth would it affect you?

Tomatina · 15/08/2024 19:30

Only realised from other posters that MM stood for Molly Mae, and I've never heard of her. I know who the Kardashians are, but my interest in them is close to zero. Under 60, but don't see what age has to do with it.

Scottishgirl85 · 15/08/2024 19:34

I'm 39 and genuinely don't know who anybody is! I've heard of the Kardashians, but no idea who they are or why they're famous, what they do, etc etc. Never heard of Molly-Mae.

Do you genuinely not realise that there are plenty of people who, until this thread, or looking at the BBC website, had not a scooby who Mollie Mae is? It doesn't make them snobby, cool, or anything other than uninterested.

butterpuffed · 15/08/2024 19:56

Does it really matter who knows who the Kardashians are , who doesn't know who they are, who is pretending to be cool , who is saying they aren't . It's not important 🙄

MadMadaMim · 15/08/2024 20:13

I'm under 60. I have no idea who MM is. I've heard of the Kardashians as I watched OJ and my DD asked for Kylie make up. That's literally all I know them. Oh - and one of the women in the family is trans and was a famous athlete. That's it. You could offer me a £billion for one more fact and I wouldn't be able to give one

MarvellousMonsters · 15/08/2024 21:16

"You're not superior or smarter or more clever than those who watch these shows"

Yeah, except I am. These shows are drivel of the worst kind. Mind numbing nonsense, anyone who is enthralled by them is a numpty.
