Why do people think it’s cool?

To pretend they don’t know who trashy celebs are?

I think the whole MM news has highlighted it. But I notice it all the time on social media media when there is something about say the Kardashians and you get a comment saying “who?”

Now to be clear I don’t follow this type of celebrity and I have never watched a single episode of the Kardashians in my life - but I find it impossible that anybody under 60 doesn’t know who they are.

why do people do this?

I know who the Kardashians are although I’ve never watched the show. I genuinely don’t know who MollyMae and Tommy are, clicked on the other mumsnet thread as it was in trending and have seen they’re from love island which I’ve never watched. I’m not pretending when I say I have never heard of them, I don’t think it makes me cool and I do watch lots of similar ‘trashy’ shows like Love At First Sight, I’m A Celeb, Britains Got Talent etc so I don’t think I’m superior just because I’ve never watched Love Island but I’m not pretending when I say I don’t know who the people on it are. I don’t have live TV (no aerial) so only watch stuff on catch up, never watch things like This Morning or The One Show or whichever shows these celebs are probably interviewed on and get exposure outside of the show, I don’t read any celeb magazines, so I really only k ow of celebs if I’ve watched whatever show they’re in.

Haven't read the thread but why do you think people are pretending? I'm guessing MM is Meghan Markle as I see endless threads about her on Mumsnet but don't engage as I don't have a clue about any of it.

I assume they genuinely don't know who you're talking about but posting "who?" is pointless. Like going onto a thread about any subject when you have no clue about it or experience. But this is the online world and people do as they please 🤷🏻‍♀️

The Kardashians are a rich Beverley Hills family whose names all start with K, but some aren’t Kardashians because their dad is Bruce Jenner. The dad of the other ones was OJ Simpson’s lawyer. One of them wore a cardigan to the Met gala.

That’s the extent of my Kardashian knowledge, which seems plenty.

I consulted the household expert and she (teen Dd) tells me Mollie Mae is no one I need to know stuff about.

Was going to say the same thing. I honestly honestly have no idea who Molly Mae is and I’m in my 40s. The fact you’ve put MM is even more obscure! Is that to highlight those of us who follow no celeb culture whatsoever. I simply don’t have the time in my life to do it.

I know who Kim is and that there are others called maybe Kylie and Jenner (?) but couldn’t ID them.

Not trying to be cool, I don’t watch trashy celeb TV (cos I’m watching a different version of what someone else thinks is trash). Not on FB, TikTok, YouTube. I watch Netflix series and Amazon etc. but no mainstream TV they’d be on.

I don’t have social media and don’t watch tv (but do watch films) so not heard of either of them before today.

since not having a car (almost 13 years now) I’ve not listened to the radio so I also don’t know any well known music either. I do have a great selection of folk and rock music on Spotify which I love.

Not wow at all. A lot of kids are not into reality telly. Some are into clarinet or horse riding or swimming or sailing. I can't see why you would expect all teens to know about people famous for wearing bikinis and being on telly and nothing more.

I don’t watch any reality TV. I don’t actively avoid it, it’s just not on my radar at all.

Nope, no idea who Mollie May is. Never watched Love Island. Do know who Kim Kardashian is, but probably couldn't pick her out of a line up and have never watched the TV show. Doesn't make me feel superior just not something I'm interested in.

I just asked my 19 year old son if he knew who Molly Mae was and he said ‘sort of’ - reality tv not his thing.

However he could probably name every footballer in the premier league because that’s his passion

I also asked if he knows Taylor Swift and he’s heard of her but doesn’t know any if her songs. Despite being born in 2005 his music taste is 90’s Britpop - his favourite artist is Noel Gallagher

In my 30s and have never watched love island. Is it some sort of live tv like big brother? (Not that I ever watched that either!) I have never heard of this person.

I am not remotely cool, I just rarely watch tv. I literally have no interest in any celebrities.

You can't pretend to not know something that you actually don't know. Until all these threads this evening, I'd never heard of these people. I have never watched Love Island, and I don't read sleb news stories either.

As for the Kardashians, I have heard the name, but I wouldn't recognise one.

It doesn't matter how many times you say the same thing, you are still wrong.

I am 51 years old, I dont own a TV, dont read magazines and dont follow SM so I have no idea who most "famous" people are. I have heard of the Kardashians but wouldnt recognise any of them if I found them eating my dinner. As for the "Mollie May and Tommy" thread, genuinely never heard of either of them.

Its a generational thing. When I was a kid my mother and her best friend were very excited about going to see Neil Diamond. I was about 10 I think, and had no clue who they were on about (except that obviously he was OLD and rubbish!) My kids are in their teens and twenties and talk about people I have never heard of and equally when Nik Kershaw came on the radio in the car earlier they were all mystified as to a) who he was and b) why the hell I was singing along to this crap.

Maybe you should stop assuming everyone knows what you do and cares about what you care about.

There are people who do performative "not knowing" but then I also know plenty of people who genuinely have no idea who various slebs are. I know them all! (Or I think I do)

I'm 62 and I know who MM is as I watched that series of Love Island.
Obviously I've heard of the Kardashians but have never watched their TV series.

I really don’t know who they are. Have seen their names before but not read further than the heading of any article about them as not interested. I have never watched love island and don’t even know what channel it’s on. The Kardashians are a bit different, even if you have no interest in them at all, it’s impossible not to have at least a vague idea of who they are by now.
