Why do people think it’s cool?

Emz1212 · 14/08/2024 20:15

To pretend they don’t know who trashy celebs are?

I think the whole MM news has highlighted it. But I notice it all the time on social media media when there is something about say the Kardashians and you get a comment saying “who?”

Now to be clear I don’t follow this type of celebrity and I have never watched a single episode of the Kardashians in my life - but I find it impossible that anybody under 60 doesn’t know who they are.

why do people do this?

YABU because how do you know they are pretending? I seem to absorb a lot of news about celebrities without even being conscious I am doing it whereas my dad would genuinely have no idea who Molly Mae is. He's not pretending, he simply knows nothing about celebs

I have no idea who she is or what she is famous for. I am old though, but not totally out of touch. I expect I’ve heard of people that you aren’t aware of too.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 14/08/2024 22:43

I'm so uncool, I'm cool.

Like Billie Eilish on the Olympics looking like she'd just got out of bed.

Me & Billie are just so effortlessly cool. Billie and I, I mean.

Demonhunter · 14/08/2024 22:44

Emz1212 · 14/08/2024 21:11

To be clear I’m not putting Molly Mae as somebody who everybody should know - I was making the point that there was a lot of “who’s” on articles today?

But when it comes to the Kardashians, Taylor Swift, Cristiano Ronaldo, Tom Hanks I refuse to believe people haven’t heard of them - even if they don’t know specifics.

I can't think of any occasion where I've seen "who" when Taylor Swift, Ronaldo or Tom Hanks is mentioned.

Alwaystired23 · 14/08/2024 22:44

I honestly didn't know who MM was until today. I don't follow celebrity gossip type stuff. I don't buy magazines etc. I prefer to read, watch things on netflix, and concentrate on my children, job, career, and uni. I'm 41. I'm definitely not cool, nor do I think I am. I have heard of the Kardasians, never watched their tv show or give two hoots about them.

loropianalover · 14/08/2024 20:21

I often imagine the smug little chuckle they do and how funny they feel after commenting ‘sorry… WHO?? 🤣 how is this news!!’ for the fifth time in one evening.

Those comments are pointless🙄😂if you don't know wtf they are just scroll on.

betterangels · 14/08/2024 22:46

Maria1979 · 14/08/2024 20:33

To be fair mumsnet got readers all over the world and some "celebrities" are just famous in their own country.

This! I have no idea who they are, but I'm shocked a reality TV break up is breaking news. That's bizarre.

Catsbreakfast · 14/08/2024 22:46

I don’t know who most of them are because I don’t live on social media and don’t watch much tv.

I only looked her up because I wanted to see which celeb called their child Bambi poor kid.

BiscuityBoyle · 14/08/2024 22:48

The thing is that 30/40 years ago we only had 3 TV channels and no internet so we all watched the same things and read the same news papers and watched the same new broadcasts. This meant that there was a small selection of people who were known to just about everyone. For example, most people would know the characters Hilda Ogden, Jack Duckworth, Pat Butcher and Frank Butcher even if they didn’t watch the soaps they were in because they would be parodied in comedy programs etc.

These days, and certainly more in the last 10 years, people have existed in separate bubbles. There are people that are famous on YouTube and Instagram that I have never heard of but every under 15 year old can tell me chapter and verse on them. And I expect there are people who are famous to me that the average 20 year old couldn’t name.

It doesn’t make any of us better, but it is very easy to avoid knowing who people are.

sunnywithmeatbols · 14/08/2024 22:49

Of course people can not know who they are. Plenty of people just aren't interested in trash pop culture and don't look at it at all. lots of people have obsessive interests in other stuff that takes over - like sports or arts.

StarryDance · 14/08/2024 22:49

I think the opposite is true. 'look at me knowing who these pointless celebs are' I'm so cool.

Tattle is maybe better suited than MN for the over invested in z listers relationships.

nocoolnamesleft · 14/08/2024 22:50

If I'd had to guess, I'd probably have gone with MM standing for Meghan Markle... There are genuinely many, many, many celebs about whom I know either nothing or next to nothing. Just not my thing.

Lentilweaver · 14/08/2024 22:52

I genuinely didn't know who they were. Wouldn't go on the thread to say that though. Would just Google. Which I have done now, as I was curious.

I do know who the Kardashians are, but I haven't watched any of their shows.

Elliania · 14/08/2024 22:53

I have a friend about my age who was raised in a very conservative & religious household. They were homeschooled, only went out with parents and then usually only to church or another approved outing in the community.
She finally left that life when she was in her mid 20s and now a few years later, she's still learning all sorts of things.
Like until she left that community she:
Didn't know who the President of the USA was (she's American and at the time it was Domald Trump)
Had never heard of Harry Potter
Had never watched a Disney film
Had never been to a fast food restaraunt
And I guarantee you she'd never heard of the Kardashians or Taylor Swift.

There are many, MANY people who engage in the world in totally different ways and have many different life experiences. I never assume someone is lying about what they have or haven't heard of.

HooverTheRoof · 14/08/2024 22:54

It's actually kind of funny when people can't wrap their head around others not knowing about this stuff to the point that they think we must have some kind of ulterior motive like "trying to be cool". It's not that deep. We're genuinely not paying attention.

Notthatcatagain · 14/08/2024 22:55

Emz1212 · 14/08/2024 21:37

It’s amazing how many people are missing the point. No I don’t know who he is - and nor would I expect you to know people I like who aren’t globally famous.

But if you are a fully grown adult I simply won’t believe you don’t know who Taylor Swift, Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, Simon Cowell, Kamala Harris et al - no matter how little interest you have in them or what they do.

Well the thing is that this Molly Mae person is hardly in the same league as any of the other names here is she. Just a very minor sort of celebrity in her own lunchbreak type, obviously Kamala Harris is a very different thing as are all the other names you mention who are mostly famous for a good reason having worked at their speciality for many years

But I don’t know who they are. Not for any ego thing, I just don’t get interested in that stuff.

I know OF the Kardashian’s and they’re all K’s and that Kylie Jenner is linked to them but I couldn’t give anymore information than that.

My TV tends to revolve around kids TV in truth and if I read the news I use Sky and just pick things I’m interested in reading.

I could do Mastermind on Bluey though.

This, I know who they are, but I can’t believe this was breaking news on Sky news and BBC!!

My mum is in her 70s and had never heard of Taylor Swift until I mentioned we were going to the concert. She expressed surprise that Taylor was a girl’s name. And she watches the news several times a day!

@Maria1979

i think that's generous of you, I think most of them are only celebrities in their own heads!

@Emz1212

I wouldn't bother typing 'who?' Because it just looks a bit 'I'm too sophisticated to know who this person is' but when I saw the announcement, my first thought was 'who'

no pretending required.

i don't gaf about a bunch of 'no nanes' ir twats like the kardasians. I've heard of them, but haven't a clue which is which or how they're related to each other, nor do I care to know.

im 55. My friend is 72, she watches Love Island, Married At First Site and all that kind of stuff I couldn't be less interested in & she couldn't be less interested in Great Home Give Away etc.

So 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

mathanxiety · 14/08/2024 22:57

It's one thing not to know or to care who these people are, milking their 15 minjtes of fame. I'm sure the majority of people fall into this category.

But to pipe up with "who?" on SM - that's just attention seeking, snooty, and juvenile.

Oh the great house giveaway. Me and DH are obsessed with it lol.

Have felt sorry for last series selling through the crash though.

mathanxiety · 14/08/2024 23:00

HappierTimesAhead · 14/08/2024 20:24

Or maybe they just don't know who those celebrities are and/or find celebrity worship culture a bit bizarre.

So maybe they could put that sentence together and post it?

*I wouldn't know who Mollie-Mae was if she jumped up and bit me on the bum, but I don't make a habit of pissing on other people's chips.

Cornflakelover · 14/08/2024 23:00

I knew who MM is because I like Tyson Fury and watched his series with his family and his brother Tommy was in the series with MM

i haven’t ever watched love island or the kardashians
or big brother and have no plans to

but I know who they are because of Kim’s relationship with kayne West and I liked his music and that one of the girls dads was OJ Simpsons lawyer😂 and that Bruce Jenner is now well I’ can’t remember what she now calls herself

so I know who most of the celebrities are by other associations

StarryDance · 14/08/2024 23:01

So it's not okay to say you have never heard of someone?

well, they're not trash celebrities are they?

you started the thread, you asked about trash celebrities.

you need to sort you own argument out before accusing people of being obtuse!
