Why do people think it’s cool?

Emz1212 · 14/08/2024 20:15

To pretend they don’t know who trashy celebs are?

I think the whole MM news has highlighted it. But I notice it all the time on social media media when there is something about say the Kardashians and you get a comment saying “who?”

Now to be clear I don’t follow this type of celebrity and I have never watched a single episode of the Kardashians in my life - but I find it impossible that anybody under 60 doesn’t know who they are.

why do people do this?

InsomniacsUnite · 14/08/2024 22:28

I know the name ‘Kardashians’ but I genuiely would not recognise them if I saw a picture of them. I don’t generally watch TV and I don’t follow celeb social media or magazines, so why would I know who they are?

longestlurkerever · 14/08/2024 22:29

Do you think pre social media there was more of a shared public conscience? Most people watched the same TV news at least

Lulubo1 · 14/08/2024 22:29

Because there are more important things in life. Never watched Love Island in my life and only today found out who Molly Mae is, and I don't care one bit. I'm under 40 and have no plans on caring about these "celebrities". I'm not trying to be smug, I just don't care and don't want to know them.

RaininSummer · 14/08/2024 22:30

No idea who molly-mae or Tommy fury are. Assumed MM was The Megan person. I looked earlier to see who the slebs were on celebrity race round world and hadn't heard of any of them either.

SimplyTheGuest · 14/08/2024 22:30

Shawdee · 14/08/2024 20:20

Who cares?

Exactly!

Issorryreallythehardestword · 14/08/2024 22:30

I don't know who MM is (beyond her name given in this thread) and by the sounds of it I'm pleased about that! I'm vaguely aware of tyson fury but I don't watch boxing. Honestly, I don't think people pretend to be cool! I bet I know a lot more about a lot of other things, not knowing about vague famous people doesn't bother me at all!!

WWHRD · 14/08/2024 22:32

I don't think you understand how echo chambers and targeted social media work.

We get fed specific streams, relentlessly...and we assume everyone else is getting the same stuff, though they aren't.

I have no idea who MM is, what they are famous for etc. I'm guessing some UK reality tv celeb, only because whenever someone mentions a celeb that I don't know, that's usually the blind spot they come from. I don't watch that stuff, don't read the Daily Mail, so none of my targeted reels or news includes them.

FlyingButtresses · 14/08/2024 22:32

Because you’d have to have the IQ of a tin opener to give those people a passing thought?

PrettyFox · 14/08/2024 22:32

Why do you think people pretend?! I’m 39 first time I heard about MollyMae was just now in a separate trending thread. My husband thinks there is only one Kardashian (Kim) and until very recently thought she was married to Jay-Z.

We barely watch TV, we don’t care about celebrities, Instagram influencers etc.

emmetgirl · 14/08/2024 22:33

I've never bloody heard of her.
Couldn't give a shit if people think I'm cool or not.

I'm not by the way.

thehourwaslate · 14/08/2024 22:34

Also thought MM must mean Meghan Markle. No idea who Tommy is either. I’m 38.

Differentstarts · 14/08/2024 22:35

Rummly · 14/08/2024 21:52

Oh for Pete’s sake. Do you live in a cave?

MM is Mad-Eye Moody. Everyone knows that.

No this is MM

Why do people think it’s cool?
Mabelthebore · 14/08/2024 22:36

Because they have no interest in it. Same as I know very little about sports or football players. I might hear it in the news but if you asked me about it 2 minutes later I would not know what they said. I have no interest so it just passes me by.
I am always amazed when people know so little about current affairs because I have a big interest in politics.

Pocketfullofdogtreats · 14/08/2024 22:36

Passportnightmare · 14/08/2024 21:20

I have no idea who MM is.

It's possibly Meghan Markle, Miriam Margoyles, Eminem, Marilyn Monroe, Mad-Eye Moody or Marilyn Manson. Take your pick!

I found out about 6 months ago that Taylor Swift, whose name I'd heard in pub quizzes, is a woman!

ValsCupcakes · 14/08/2024 22:16

I know who the Kardashians are, Molly-Mae and Tommy Fury and even one or two others but not because I follow them or watch anything they are in. It's because there is no escape from them in the online news sites where they appear when you are looking for something else.

See I’ve never seen them on online news sites. I guess it depends on the ones you go to.

HooverTheRoof · 14/08/2024 22:38

I don't really watch much TV, don't like pop music, rarely watch films etc so my Knowledge of celebrities is genuinely very poor. I might have heard of the names of some of them but couldn't tell you why they are famous or what they look like. For me if I say "who?" It doesn't necessarily mean I have never heard their name, but I still don't know who they are if that makes sense. I'm definitely not cool 😂think more scruffy, nerd type

DopeyS · 14/08/2024 22:38

I know what you mean. It's the same thing when there is a programme that has been huge and lots of people are talking about it. For instance Game of Thrones when it was coming to the end and obviously a lot of people were watching it. If there was a post about it the series there would always be comments like 'well I've never watched a single episode'. I always found it a bit strange, especially on a post about it 🤷🏼‍♀️

I liked the last Celebrity Race Around the World as I’d not heard of any of them so it was like watching a normal one.
I’ve not watched this new one yet.

RonGranger · 14/08/2024 22:39

35 here and no idea who Molly Mae is, MM would be Meghan Markle to me. Only know you meant Molly Mae by the comments. But I wouldn’t do the stupid ‘who?!’ comment on a post either 😅

I agree with you about some celebrities. I find it hard to believe anyone just hasn't heard of the Kardashians.

But I genuinely only have a vague awareness of Mollie-Mae - I couldn't have told you why she was famous, and I hadn't heard of her partner. I don't think Mollie-Mae has quite the same global recognition as the Kardashians.

I wouldn't go onto a thread about her to just respond with "who?" though.

neither would I. I also think 'coolness' is one of the dumbest, emptiest and possibly destructive concepts ever. I say that as someone born in 1960 and having rammed down my throat in the 70s and 80s and even later.

TheOnlyCherryOnMyTree · 14/08/2024 22:42

NetZeroZealot · 14/08/2024 22:26

Eh?
I'm 60. Never, ever heard of Mollie Mae until I saw her name pop up on here today.
Don't know, don't care.
I get my news from the BBC, Guardian, Radio 4 ... and Mumsnet!
I do know who the Kardashians are though.

I searched molly mae the guardian and the BBC and multiple articles come up from through the years. This is why is kind of weird when people are saying I don't watch love island so I don't know. I don't either but I read the news and listen to the news on the radio, listen to podcasts, use mumsnet. Pop culture is everywhere, that's why it's called pop culture because it is so popular.

thehourwaslate · 14/08/2024 22:42

How old are you @Emz1212 ? Perhaps it’s an age thing, in that maybe you’re right that everyone your age and younger will have heard of the Kardashians etc, whereas people a little older genuinely may have not?
