Why do people think it’s cool?

To pretend they don’t know who trashy celebs are?

I think the whole MM news has highlighted it. But I notice it all the time on social media media when there is something about say the Kardashians and you get a comment saying “who?”

Now to be clear I don’t follow this type of celebrity and I have never watched a single episode of the Kardashians in my life - but I find it impossible that anybody under 60 doesn’t know who they are.

why do people do this?

OP posts:

I really don't know who most of them are - and I really don't care!

This! Why do you think people actually give a shit who these nonentities are?

We have more important things in life.

LaurieFairyCake · 14/08/2024 22:12

Yeah shock horror people are fucking different Hmm

I know who the entire cabinet is and pretty much every Tory MP who lost their seat but the last reality show I watched was the first series of big brother - and I've never watched anything since

Miloandfreddy · 14/08/2024 22:12

My husband is 38 and he genuinely would not have a clue who Molly Mae is. He would have heard of the Kardashian's but wouldn't be able to pick one out of a line up or know their first names or what they 'do'

Izzynohopanda · 14/08/2024 22:12

LaurieFairyCake · 14/08/2024 22:06

I STILL don't know what Taylor swift looks like though I know that she's been doing concerts

Funnily enough I'm not her target audience Confused

I do obviously know what Kamala Harris looks like as she's the next president of the United States 🇺🇸

if Tyler Swift walked past me, I wouldn’t know who she was either, , even if she had an entourage of people with her (I’d probably guess she was famous then).

BiscuityBoyle · 14/08/2024 22:13

I always find it interesting when they have a name the person round on Pointless to see who gets high points. A lot of more recent celebrities score lower.

That said they had a photograph of the Queen once and only about 89 people knew who that was.

longestlurkerever · 14/08/2024 22:13

I genuinely clicked on that molly mae thread thinking it was about baby names. And assumed your reference was to Meghsn Markle. I probably wouldn't have said so if you hadn't asked- I'd have just scrolled on, but i think yabu to think people are feigning ignorance, they just don't read/watch the same things as you. I barely know who the Kardashians are either. I have heard of them but have only the vaguest idea of what they do or look like.

MeinKraft · 14/08/2024 22:13

Nothing to do with 'being cool', a phrase that MN has adopted in a negative way. In relation to the people about who a lot seem to be very invested, I've never heard of them and have no idea what they do to be deemed 'celebrities', sorry love. I have never watched any 'reality' programme but apparently they're something to do with that genre.
As far as the Karkrashians, yes, I've heard the name but I have no idea what they do for their 'fame' and couldn't pick one out in a line-up.

I think the OP meant not that people ignore celebrity culture to look cool, but that commenting 'who?' Is done for effect and it irritates me too actually, why go to the effort of posting 'who?' If you want to know then go and google them and if you don't just move on with your life.

Dobest · 14/08/2024 22:15

Molly what?

PaintedPottery · 14/08/2024 22:15

I had to Google who Molly Mae is. And I’ve only seen one comment on my socials about her and that’s from a woman in her 60s - which is what prompted me to Google!

SamW98 · 14/08/2024 22:15

I actually live in one of the towns TOWIE is filmed in and I couldn’t identify single one of the cast if I saw them in the high street.

The only local celebs I recognise are footballers (ex and current) and Rylan who I see out a lot

ValsCupcakes · 14/08/2024 22:16

I know who the Kardashians are, Molly-Mae and Tommy Fury and even one or two others but not because I follow them or watch anything they are in. It's because there is no escape from them in the online news sites where they appear when you are looking for something else.

Georgethecat1 · 14/08/2024 22:19

Emz1212 · 14/08/2024 21:37

It’s amazing how many people are missing the point. No I don’t know who he is - and nor would I expect you to know people I like who aren’t globally famous.

But if you are a fully grown adult I simply won’t believe you don’t know who Taylor Swift, Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, Simon Cowell, Kamala Harris et al - no matter how little interest you have in them or what they do.

I know most of these but had to google Kamala Harris.

I don’t find it hard to believe people haven’t heard of the Kardashian’s as an example. With tv on demand it’s easier to stay in your bubble of interest. I don’t buy magazines or go to the shops often, I don’t watch adverts etc.

I have no idea who Molly is.

Winter2020 · 14/08/2024 22:19

TheYearOfSmallThings · 14/08/2024 20:23

I genuinely don't know who Mally Mae is - I thought you were putting MM for Meghan Markle. I am well under 60 btw.

Same. I thought the person who put ‘Who is MM” was cracking a joke as (I thought) it was clearly Meghan Markle.
I have never hear of Molly Mae and have a vague idea that Tommy Fury is a boxer? Someone mentioned Tommy Fury on the thread so that is why I say that.
Not lying. Don’t think it makes me anything I just don’t know who they are. Everyone is not the same as you OP and they don’t know the same things. Genuinely.

oakleaffy · 14/08/2024 22:21

I thought Tommy was Tommy Robinson.{Because of far right news}
Never heard of Mollie May or Tommy.

ForGreyKoala · 14/08/2024 22:23

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 14/08/2024 20:21

I agree with you about some celebrities. I find it hard to believe anyone just hasn't heard of the Kardashians.

But I genuinely only have a vague awareness of Mollie-Mae - I couldn't have told you why she was famous, and I hadn't heard of her partner. I don't think Mollie-Mae has quite the same global recognition as the Kardashians.

I wouldn't go onto a thread about her to just respond with "who?" though.

Exactly this. I don't live in the UK and while I have read the name Mollie-Mae on MM I haven't the faintest clue who they are.

HappyAsASandboy · 14/08/2024 22:23

When I saw MM I assumed Megan Markle!

I have heard of the Kardashian's but would t recognise one in a photo and couldn't tell you anything about them other than they all have huge arses and fat lips.

I don't watch TV or read magazines. My Facebook feeds don't give me celeb stuff (more self help and STEM and economist articles!). My friends don't know who these people are either, so they do t talk about them.

I'm not being cool. I just genuinely don't follow these people and don't watch TV or read magazines.

ValsCupcakes · 14/08/2024 22:23

@MeinKraft I think the "who?" is often in response to some article talking about them as a celebrity or calling them "the star" in said article. It's probably said ironically as they aren't "stars" at all just people fooling about on reality shows.

I just looked up the 2024 Strictly line-up. Punam Krishan and Tasha Ghouri totally escape me - I've never heard of either of them, and that's because I've never watched the shows they're in. I've never watched Pete Wicks in anything either, but he's one I have heard of because they're stuffed in our faces in online news sites.

The OP also said " I have never watched a single episode of the Kardashians in my life - but I find it impossible that anybody under 60 doesn’t know who they are."

So the thread is also about people not knowing about celeb culture, or pretending not to know, to be cool, or something like that😂

BigMandyHarris · 14/08/2024 22:24

I do know who the Kardashians are but couldn’t name all of them.

I had no idea who MM was until today but guessed the bloke was probably related to Tyson F.

I’m not cool

MereDintofPandiculation · 14/08/2024 22:24

loropianalover · 14/08/2024 20:21

I often imagine the smug little chuckle they do and how funny they feel after commenting ‘sorry… WHO?? 🤣 how is this news!!’ for the fifth time in one evening.

Well, if you're imagining the smug little chuckle, then its clearly all in your mind.

longestlurkerever · 14/08/2024 22:25

OK I admit that I do find it a bit odd how many people haven't of Kamala Harris. Presumably you knew Biden stood down?

SamW98 · 14/08/2024 22:25

After reading this thread I googled Molly Mae and found out her now ex bf is boxer Tyson Fury’s brother - every day really is a school day!

Heber · 14/08/2024 22:26

We all have our bubbles to an extent, and it pulls us up quick when we realise that we're inside one! I'm really surprised that people don't know who Kamala Harris is, when she's mentioned about 20 times a day in our house 😂

NetZeroZealot · 14/08/2024 22:26

Eh?
I'm 60. Never, ever heard of Mollie Mae until I saw her name pop up on here today.
Don't know, don't care.
I get my news from the BBC, Guardian, Radio 4 ... and Mumsnet!
I do know who the Kardashians are though.

So did I, but going on some of the posts above we're not looking at the same 'online news sites'.
