To pretend they don’t know who trashy celebs are?

I think the whole MM news has highlighted it. But I notice it all the time on social media media when there is something about say the Kardashians and you get a comment saying “who?”

Now to be clear I don’t follow this type of celebrity and I have never watched a single episode of the Kardashians in my life - but I find it impossible that anybody under 60 doesn’t know who they are.

why do people do this?

I have literally never seen or heard anyone say ‘’who?’’ when hearing about the likes of Donald Trump, and as far as David Beckham goes, he was everywhere in the 90s and early 00’s on account of the fact he was more than just a footballer, he was married to one of the most well known pop stars of the time, and was the front man of Calvin Klein. Had he been just a footballer I doubt he would have been such a big name.

As for Taylor Swift, I can definitely see why some people might not know who she is if you’re not her target audience or into her sort of music.

You’re comparing apples and pears trying to make your point. I think if anyone says ‘’who?’’ when referring to a well known, global personality, they are probably using it sarcastically to be dismissive, as if to indicate that they find that person’s opinions irrelevant. I don’t think it’s that they genuinely don’t know who the person is.

i don’t think it’s cool. I know there is a kardashian family and Kim, but that’s it. I saw a post about Molly-Mae and genuinely don’t know who that is. I don’t watch love island and have no idea who is in it each year. My friendship group is similar.

I don’t know who Kamala Harris is so that makes me a liar and uncool. Crushed, I will go hang my head in shame.

I’ve said multiple times I don’t include her in that list.

So why is your OP about your accusation that people who say they don't know her are lying ("to be cool").

I’ve heard of the Kardashian’s but wouldn’t know anything about them or who is who. I’ve only vaguely heard of Molly Mae because our kids have mentioned her but no clue about her. It’s possible for famous names to pass you by if you’re not interested.
I don’t think you can compare reality stars/influencers to people who have achieved massive things in sport/music etc.
Does that make me cool or uncool….🤣🤣

I don't do any social media, I only post on here. I try to avoid the news sites too, so I'm a genuine 'who'? person.

I don't know what she looks like either but I bet I can guess:
Long, blonde, carefully tousled hair. Slim but curvy. Tanned. Pouty lips. Slightly vacuous expression. Eyebrows darker than her hair.

I know who the Kardashians are in a general sense, as in rich US family and all the girls have names starting with K. Couldn't tell you which was which though.

Never watched a series of Love Island, or the Essex thing, Geordie Shore, real housewives or any of that sort of reality so wouln't know any people from that. It's not about thinking it's "cool" not to know, it's that I literally have zero interest.

I’d never heard of these two before today when I had heard they had split up. I don’t think I’m cool or better than anyone else for not knowing.

I've heard of the Kardashians, so I am aware theres more than one of them and assume them to be a family and I know one is Kim Kardashian.

I could not pick any of them out of a line up. (Just asked DP if he knows who they are and he suggested theres Kim, Khloe, Kolostomy and Klunge, but i suspect he's lying. If not he knows more than I!)

I have no idea who Molly-Mae is, or who she was with or has split up from.

Mostly, this is because I genuinely do not want to know.

I am pretty sure I am not stupid, these people do not interest me, if what they did was of interest to me, I'd know who they were... therefore... it is not and I do not.

I know who Irving Finkel is... only one of the greatest living wizards of our time, the like of which we will not see again.

I find this far more weird which goes to show that we follow our own interests and it's perfectly plausible that people haven't heard of trashy celebs.

Kamala Harris is the Vice President of the US and is now the democratic nominee for president as Boden has stepped down. Her running mate is a lesser known man called Tim Walz.

Anyway - I do not equate not knowing who a recent US president is with not knowing an influencer!

long ago i got the distinct impression that "celebrities" are relatively well known for doing nothing fancy in particular.
and so to NOT support that type of wasted existence i purposefully do NOT stay on top of any such self centered behavior.
so no, i have zero knowledge of current celebrities.

Nothing to do with 'being cool', a phrase that MN has adopted in a negative way. In relation to the people about who a lot seem to be very invested, I've never heard of them and have no idea what they do to be deemed 'celebrities', sorry love. I have never watched any 'reality' programme but apparently they're something to do with that genre.
As far as the Karkrashians, yes, I've heard the name but I have no idea what they do for their 'fame' and couldn't pick one out in a line-up.

Yeah I googled straight after and was highly embarrassed at myself. However, it's not something I take an interest in therefore there's no reason I'd know.

I don't think I am cool not knowing who they are, l just don't watch much telly for a variety of reasons, so genuinely don't know who they are. I have heard of the Kardashian's but would struggle to recognise or name them, but know some very clever professional people who could !

I am 61 and had never heard of this (now ex) couple until tonight. I don’t think I’m cool or otherwise and literally couldn’t care less.
