Why do people think it’s cool?

Emz1212 · 14/08/2024 20:15

To pretend they don’t know who trashy celebs are?

I think the whole MM news has highlighted it. But I notice it all the time on social media media when there is something about say the Kardashians and you get a comment saying “who?”

Now to be clear I don’t follow this type of celebrity and I have never watched a single episode of the Kardashians in my life - but I find it impossible that anybody under 60 doesn’t know who they are.

why do people do this?

But these people are not 'trashy celebs'!

You keep mentioning people who are - for better or worse - exceptionally successful high achievers in their field. That's a world away from your thread.

How can you compare knowing who Kamala Harris is with Molly Mae, for goodness sake?!

Madness.

I’ve said multiple times I don’t include her in that list.

I 100% don't know who Molly Mae is, or Tommy Fury, and I couldn't name the third Kardashian, but I know there was a brother. Are there more sisters? I know they have Jenner sisters (I was going to write Kendal sisters, but remembered that is the first name of one of them?)

I honestly got the Princes of England confused until Harry married Megan. Now, I'm good. I am 43 and stopped trying to keep up in the early 2000s with the likes of Paris Hilton and errrrrrr Lindsay Lohan, that's right. My gosh, my brain! Then I had kids etc. Someone mentioned Megan Fox to me the other day and I vaguely recall teh name, but nothing about what she looks like.

So I think it is very very possible. It's too much to hold in the brain, I'm desperately trying to retain my kids' friends names, and their teachers.... Haaaa!

I've just googled these love island people. I'm astounded that people are "fans" of these orange chav looking fools famous for going on a reality show about shagging each other.

I blame the Tories for closing the libraries.

Harsh...but fair.

Noonelikesasloppytrifle · 14/08/2024 21:44

I often don't know who these people are - I have never watched any reality TV. I do know who the Kardashians are and I would recognise Kim and probably Kylie but no idea about the others. I only know who Molly Mae is because it's on the BBC headlines. I'm mid forties.

I don't think I'm cool but I am fairly contemptuous about the whole celebrity thing at the moment. These people aren't talented, they are celebrities for the sake of celebrity. They are not role models that I would want my children to aspire to be like. I couldn't care less about their antics and possibly I project this in the hope that others will also stop caring.

Covetthee · 14/08/2024 21:02

I used to think the same and I think there are some celebs that are obviously well known, and people act like who they don’t know is a bit silly (eg madonna) esp when its a death thread.

BUT.. i do think its possible to not know so called bog celebs- my youngest niece recently telling me about all the music and ‘celebs’ she follows and I honestly had 0 idea who they were and having checked social media they have massive followings so you would have thought I would.

One example- Olivia rodrigo.. massive singer who apparently has sold out many 02 shows this summer and everyone under the age of 25 probably knows. I had heard the name but I honestly thought she was some reality tv star lol

Olivia Rodrigo is superb, I can't reccommend her most recent album, 'Guts', highly enough, she is a wonderful artist and I have many friends my age who, like me, are definitely over 25, who love her, she's really something special.
I follow modern pop music avidly, pop music has been an obsession of mine since I was a small child, and I certainly think contemporary girl pop, which has always been my first musical love, is just wonderful at the moment. Taylor Swift is my very favourite but there are many other brilliantly talented new, young female artists who are doing really well right now and are more than worth your time, Olivia Rodrigo, Chappell Roan, Sabrina Carpenter and Maisie Peters to name but a few!

AInightingale · 14/08/2024 21:44

I would seriously struggle to name more than about three Premier League footballers or a single UK cricketer, because I'm just not interested in sport. Yet people talk about football all the time and it's never off the telly or the papers. My brain and ability to take in any info just skims over it. Maybe some people are similarly just genuinely not interested in celebs and their world?

BuccoA · 14/08/2024 21:44

Oh good lord they have a child named Bambi. 🤡

Heber · 14/08/2024 21:45

Emz1212 · 14/08/2024 21:43

I’ve said multiple times I don’t include her in that list.

But your whole thread is about 'trashy celebs' and suddenly, your examples are globally famous, high achieving individuals.

I literally don't know what your point it, at this point.

SamW98 · 14/08/2024 21:45

Emz1212 · 14/08/2024 21:41

That’s nonsense - there are some people who you would just know.

I hate football - literally leave the room when hubby and son watches it - but it’s impossible to not know who David Beckham is.

Its absolutely not nonsense AT ALLa just because YOU can’t understand it doesn’t mean everyone lives by your standards.

Ill repeat I couldn’t pick 99% of reality tv people out of a line up and for the third time I don’t have a clue about Taylor bloody Swift

Really to keep implying people are lying just because they don’t have same interests as you is ridiculous and very rude.

Elphame · 14/08/2024 21:45

Emz1212 · 14/08/2024 20:58

I think people are missing the point.

I have never seen the kardashians, I know almost nothing about them, but I have absolutely heard of them and know roughly what they are famous for.

I don’t believe that people haven’t heard of them.

Why? They simply don't register on my radar nor in my own social media.

Someone very well known in an area I am interested in passed away this week, and my feeds have been full of tributes from a lot of well known individuals in the circles within which I move.

You won't have heard of him, though. Just like I have missed knowing about Mollie Mae

LuckyLerwick · 14/08/2024 21:45

Emz1212 · 14/08/2024 21:37

It’s amazing how many people are missing the point. No I don’t know who he is - and nor would I expect you to know people I like who aren’t globally famous.

But if you are a fully grown adult I simply won’t believe you don’t know who Taylor Swift, Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, Simon Cowell, Kamala Harris et al - no matter how little interest you have in them or what they do.

Well OP, that's a 'you' problem isn't it?

If you haven't got enough imagination to understand that people aren't all the same/like you or that they live different lives and have different priorities...but instead are absolutely convinced they are lying? Definitely a 'you' problem.

GoldenLegend · 14/08/2024 21:45

Rummly · 14/08/2024 21:39

Is that the astrologer? Or the one who was in Bridget Jones?

I’d defo go to Budleigh Salterton, or anywhere else in Scotland, to see either of them.

Nah, he's the beardy bloke off Great British Sewing Bee and I'm gutted his event was sold out before I even knew he was appearing!

BogusHocusPocus · 14/08/2024 21:46

I thought MM meant Meghan Markle.

I genuinely have no idea who Mollie-Mae is - and I'm ('only' 🤣) fifty.

Isometimeswonder · 14/08/2024 21:47

Patronising or what?!
I don't watch much tv and I don't read women's magazines.
I have heard of the kardashians but couldn't name them. No idea re others.

I can promise you that DP would have no idea who Zuckerburg or Kamala Harris are. Despite my best attempts, she barely cares about UK politics, let alone American, and tech billionaires wouldn't cross her radar at all. She only knows Musk because he called a diver a peado.

People have different interests. I know everyone you mentioned above, but DP had to explain who the "Little women" were to me the other day, because I'd never heard of the book (or many films apparently)

@twoforj0y I honestly don't know who either of those people are, I've never heard of them before.

Totally. I’ve got people that in my world I’d say are hugely well known but accept others don’t have a clue who they are

When you put MM my first thought was Meghan Markle 🤷‍♀️ I truly haven't a clue who Molly Mae or Tommy Fury are and I am under 60

Me too!

GlomOfNit · 14/08/2024 21:51

I don't say this because I want to seem 'cool' (I'm 51, screw that). I say it (if I even need to) because I genuinely don't know, automatically, who you mean by 'MM'. I only vaguely know that the Kardashians are trashy reality tv people and genuinely know no more than that.

I have no interest in this sort of stuff. I think it's shallow, trashy and exploitative of all of us. So why would I bother to know who these nobodies are? Not trying to be cool, just not interested!

CornedBeef451 · 14/08/2024 21:51

I am aware of the Kardashians since their dad now thinks he's a woman and one of them is or was was dating Timothy Chamalet - don't know which sister is which though.

PerkyMintDeer · 14/08/2024 21:52

I'm 40 and I genuinely don't know who a lot of these people are as I don't watch any reality TV (I just don't enjoy it), don't read gossip mags/websites/papers that share celebrity gossip etc. I also don't use social media apart from MN. Quite often I'll have the One Show or a morning TV show on and a celeb will be on and I'll have zero clue who they are.

I only found out this morning, for example, that Josie Gibson who presents This Morning won a reality show a while back (Big Brother or I'm A Celeb, I think?) and that's how she became famous.

I honestly don't think I'm better than anyone else, I just literally know nothing about Reality TV. I do watch Strictly, but that's it and these days I don't know who half the "celebs" are. I don't watch a whole lot of TV anyway. Mainly Crime dramas or things like Bridgerton etc. Only what interests me and, without any snobbiness here, I just genuinely only care about my interests...I don't feel the need to learn about Love Island or Real Housewives or whatever just because some other people do. It's just not a priority! I'm ND and if something isn't a special interest of mine I literally can't force an interest.

SnakesAndArrows · 14/08/2024 21:52

Emz1212 · 14/08/2024 21:43

I’ve said multiple times I don’t include her in that list.

Your OP literally is “Why do people think it’s cool to pretend they don’t know who trashy celebs are?”, using MM and the Kardashians as examples, and now you’re complaining that people are responding to your question with reference to your question?

I think you may not understand how discussion forums work.
