To pretend they don’t know who trashy celebs are?

I think the whole MM news has highlighted it. But I notice it all the time on social media media when there is something about say the Kardashians and you get a comment saying “who?”

Now to be clear I don’t follow this type of celebrity and I have never watched a single episode of the Kardashians in my life - but I find it impossible that anybody under 60 doesn’t know who they are.

why do people do this?

Maybe Tyson Fury more so.

Its not impossible to zone out and have no idea who ever very well known people are if you have no interest.

I only recently heard the name Taylor Swift mentioned on the news but I had no idea who was. I now know she’s a singer but I couldn’t pick her out of a line up and I wouldn’t know any of her songs.

I know who Messi is because I’ve got a 19 year old son who loves football and spent his childhood collecting Panini stickers. In fact I know far more about football than reality tv or commercial pop stars

She's not being silly. People have other interests. I could tell you that Patrick Grant is going to be promoting his book at Budleigh Salterton Literary Festival next month, for example. I wouldn't expect you to know who he is or the title of his book.

I actually just googled Tyson Fury and realised I have never seen the man before. Heard the name...do not recognise the face. I was imagining that other boxer felly...Connor McGregor.

OP forgets some people have busy lives revolving around work and family so literally do not have time to watch or read the types of nonsense where trashy celebs feature

I have barely enough time to watch or listen to the actual news and books that interest me let alone anything else

Also, in addition to not knowing most of them, I have absolutely zero interest in being cool.

I’m 58 and not cool and although I know the name of the Kardashians that is all I know. I have never heard of MM.

I've heard of MollieMae but couldn't tell you anything about her and I don't know what she looks like.

I've just learnt that her now ex is not Tyson Fury.

She's nowhere in the same league as David Beckham, Taylor Swift or Donald Trump so I don't know why you keep linking them.

I don't know loads - that's why I have teenagers.

It’s amazing how many people are missing the point. No I don’t know who he is - and nor would I expect you to know people I like who aren’t globally famous.

But if you are a fully grown adult I simply won’t believe you don’t know who Taylor Swift, Mark Zuckerberg, Elon Musk, Simon Cowell, Kamala Harris et al - no matter how little interest you have in them or what they do.

I’m well under 60. I know the Kardashians as they are global and everywhere. I would have assumed MM stood for Meghan Markle like others have said. To me Meghan is genuinely famous.

I’ve never watched Love Island, but I know what it’s about so can imagine what Mollie-Mae looks like without even googling her which I’ll do now. I expect she’s beach body ready, full of tweakments, fake tan, contouring etc, not that there’s anything wrong with that, but it’s just my assumption.

DH & I had no idea who they were - after dd gave us ‘the news’ and we responded ‘who’?! she rolled her eyes & shrugged in frustration. Why on earth would we know? Don’t watch reality or daytime tv, don’t read trash newspapers or magazines ….not interested in the lives of people whose ‘celebrity’ comes from apparently wearing bikini/trunks on tv whilst vying to snog varying people (dd has now explained)..

I know the footballers because I like football, the politicuans because I'm interested in politics and Elon Musk because he's a cunt.

But now you're changing the list of people to include globally significant politicians. I do know who they are, but if I'd been someone my age who'd never used Twitter, I might not know who Musk is. If I didn't take an interest in politics I might not know who Kamala Harris is.

I've just googled these love island people. I'm astounded that people are "fans" of these orange chav looking fools famous for going on a reality show about shagging each other.

I hate football - literally leave the room when hubby and son watches it - but it’s impossible to not know who David Beckham is.

Some of us actually don’t. I don’t watch TV other than to watch films on Netflix. I don’t read magazines, or the newspaper. My online activities involve farming and horse things.
We run a farm and livery yard and have no interest in anything celebrity.
I vaguely know of the Kardashians but I’ve never seen anything with them in and wouldn’t know them if I fell over them.

Not everyone in the world enjoys mindless celebrity and reality TV rubbish… thank god. I hold on to that thought, that there are still intelligent beings out there, somewhere.

But these people are not 'trashy celebs'!

You keep mentioning people who are - for better or worse - exceptionally successful high achievers in their field. That's a world away from your thread.

Honestly never heard of Lionel Messi either. I’ve heard of the Kardashians but couldn’t tell you anything about them and there’s absolutely 0% chance I’d recognise any of them.
