Why do people think it’s cool?

Emz1212 · 14/08/2024 20:15

To pretend they don’t know who trashy celebs are?

I think the whole MM news has highlighted it. But I notice it all the time on social media media when there is something about say the Kardashians and you get a comment saying “who?”

Now to be clear I don’t follow this type of celebrity and I have never watched a single episode of the Kardashians in my life - but I find it impossible that anybody under 60 doesn’t know who they are.

why do people do this?

I genuinely don't know who Mally Mae is - I thought you were putting MM for Meghan Markle. I am well under 60 btw.

Agreed. That said, I had heard of the Kardashians - but only understood their story (kids of the OJ Simpson lawyer) when a friend explained that to me very recently. It must depend on what news sources you follow, surely?

Alifemoreordinary123 · 14/08/2024 21:25

I’m early 40s - I know who Molly Mae is and I may guess a Kardashian out of a crowd. Beyond that, I’m clueless. Don’t watch TV, don’t read celeb pages - I wouldn’t have a clue.

Scirocco · 14/08/2024 21:25

Cardassians are much more fun than Kardashians, btw.

nextdoorconundrum · 14/08/2024 21:26

I know who David Beckam is and I know A LOT about Donald Trump.. (because I'm interested in world affairs and politics...

Differentstarts · 14/08/2024 21:26

Because some people dont know who these people are they have their own lives and real problems so don't take any notice who was in love island years ago. Iv never watched love island. Iv heard her name mentioned on social media and things but I couldn't tell you what she looks like or anything. If you had asked me about a celebrity/reality star when I was 12/13 I would of known exactly what you where talking about and be right up to date in what's going on but as an adult no.

The amount of people who have totally missed the original point is mind blowing. I can’t get over how many people have come on here just to say they don’t know who Molly Mae is 🤦🏻‍♀️

I've re read the OP and still don't say what's wrong with saying that I've never heard of these people. My point being that it is perfectly possible for thousands of people NOT to know who they are, and that the OP is being unreasonable if she thinks that people are lying or trying to signal something else, other than ignorance when they say , "who"?

There's another example I've just seen on a thread entitled
"AIBU To think this is engagement farming?

There's a TikToker called flightles.bird whose been posting for 3 days about her husband's manic episode. She's gained 50k followers in that time and lots of people think it's genuine but it's giving me Carrie Jade William vibes."

I have no idea what Hopnscotch means by "Carrie Jade William vibes", but obviously it must mean something to other MNers

TheOnlyCherryOnMyTree · 14/08/2024 21:27

I guarantee OP the same people who are on this thread saying I've never heard of her will be back in a few years time when she hits the news again saying Molly Mae who? I think some people just retain info better than others.

Catza · 14/08/2024 21:27

Emz1212 · 14/08/2024 21:23

it isn’t hard to belive. I’m not sure how many times I need to say the same thing.

Just because you don’t care about football I still would expect you to know David Beckham. Just because you don’t care about politics I would still expect you to know Donald Trump.

The thing is, you didn't write about Donald Trump or David Beckham. In your opening post, you said that the recent posts about MM "highlighted" to you these, supposedly, disingenuous posters. I might be wrong (because I didn't look at the other thread) but I would hazard a guess that people didn't go on there to say they didn't know who David Beckham was. So this comparison is irrelevant in the context of your original post.

What? I didn't know that! I thought they were just a random rich family.

fghbvh · 14/08/2024 21:27

I remember when I was in my 20s mocking my dad for not knowing who any of the "celebrities" were in a copy of Heat magazine.
I'm now in my 40s and no longer keep up much with popular culture. While I have heard of Mollie Mae, I'm sure there are 100s of others like her who I have no clue about.
It isn't because I think I'm cool, far from it - I'm middle aged and am no longer interested in people like this (who are famous just for being young and attractive with seemingly no other talent).

ParrotPirouette · 14/08/2024 21:28

Emz1212 · 14/08/2024 21:15

You are so missing the point. I’m not saying you have to watch what I watch or listen to what I listen to.

My point is I don’t listen to Taylor Swift but know who she is. I don’t watch football but know who Lionel Messi.

Because it’s almost impossible not to.

I don’t know who Lionel Messi is. I don’t think I have ever come across the name before.
I don’t want to google because I just don’t care.
We do post ‘who?’ because we think we’re superior, yes.

oh I’m in a bad mood tonight, can you tell?

Molly-Mae I am thinking! Broke up with Tommy Fury. Social media explosion!

I genuinely have no idea who either of those people are

Moonshine5 · 14/08/2024 21:28

I don't think it's cool, I think it's normal - in my circle not everyone watches love island or Gogglebox - I don't but people I love, people who are intelligent do. It's not a judgement, it's a preference that's all. I didn't recognise the name Molly Mae when I saw the breaking news on sky so I had to google. Big deal

SamW98 · 14/08/2024 21:28

I’ve heard the name Kardashian but all I know about them is one of them used to be with Kanye and Caitlin Jenner is their dad (I think) - that’s it! I could unpick them out of a line up. As for this couple who’ve split up, I have no idea who they are. I’ve read on here they were from Love Island and I can honestly say I’ve never seen a minute of that show and don’t really know anything about it.

Im under 60 and I don’t consider myself highbrow but 95% of reality tv passes me by. There’s 10000’s of other things hinge to watch and read about other than low rent celebs.

ColinMyWifeBridgerton · 14/08/2024 21:28

I still don't get it, even after reading your updates.

Kardashians, Taylor Swift, Cristiano Ronaldo, Tom Hanks are all famous for being top of their fields. It would be unusual to not know them, but not unheard of.

I have no memory for names, have no interest in celebrities and was raised abroad, but seem very native. So I frequently run into the problem of people thinking I'm pretending to not know who Very Famous Celebrity from the 80s or 90s is, when in reality they just weren't on my radar for cultural and interest reasons.

Cultures can be insulated, too. At maybe 14 I went to dinner at a friend's house, whose parents fancied themselves sophisticated and very well educated. They openly laughed at me for not knowing who Karl Marx was. A week later I received the same reception at another friend's house for not knowing the big brother winner. Maybe it was deserved in both cases, I was a very head in the clouds teenager - but it just goes to show that many so-called household names really depend on the household.

Guess my oldness is reflected in the way I just wonder why and how they are all so rich and famous as most of them do not have any discernible talent other than self promotion

You're right, @Lifeomars, and it is intriguing that being famous for Being Famous has taken on such a vigorous life of its own that these "only famous" people make the national news every day. Whatever they're doing, it's clearly working ... but I still can't figure out what it is. Or, more accurately, why self-promotion is now so greatly admired by so many.

I must be a bit cool, though! I've got a pair of jeans designed by the younger Kardashian! They're the best jeans I've ever had. Unfortunately, I can't remember her name so I'm not cool after all ... It begins with a K 😆

well, I had no idea who MM or Molly Mae was until I looked her up...

FOJN · 14/08/2024 21:30

I don't understand why someone would think anyone else would pretend not to know who celebrities are because it's cool. I'm just not that interested. I have no idea who Molly Mae or Tommy Fury are, I don't think I'm cool.

Perhaps the OP feels insecure; she's described these people as trashy, I have no idea who they are so can't say whether they are trashy or not.

pictoosh · 14/08/2024 21:31

I asked the kids (15 and 16, girl and boy) if they know who Molly Mae Hague is? They don't. I asked if they'd heard her name at all. They haven't. Nor Tommy Fury. DD and I have heard of Tyson Fury. Ds is none the wiser.
I don't think they're household names or anything are they?

Just because you don’t care about football I still would expect you to know David Beckham. Just because you don’t care about politics I would still expect you to know Donald Trump.

But both of those examples are sports and politics. Beckham is famous for being a good footballer, Trump for being a present threat to democracy and women's rights.

Your thread was specifically about 'trashy celebs' and to quote you "I find it impossible that anybody under 60 doesn’t know who they are."

Which, as many posters have pointed out, is demonstrably untrue. I'm well under 60😂
