Is one of the headlines on the BBC webpage?

🙄

I don’t disagree.

Flyonthewall01 · 14/08/2024 17:27

I hadn’t even seen it, I had to actually go searching for it. So really this thread is just as inane as the bbc reporting it

Sirzy · 14/08/2024 17:27

I got a sky “breaking news” alert and thought similar.

TheTripThatWasnt · 14/08/2024 17:28

I saw that and thought exactly the same! In what kind of insane world is that even news, let alone headline news?

MorrisZapp · 14/08/2024 17:28

WHO

AgileGreenSeal · 14/08/2024 17:28

If it’s BBC … nothing would surprise me.

YANBU.

2 wannabees celebrities relationship breakdown is about as important as Joe Bloggs down the road marriage/relationship breakdown.

There are far more serious issues the News Channels should be reporting on.

Sleephound · 14/08/2024 17:33

Well, on seeing this thread I felt the need to look it up. I've never heard of either of them until today, which I'd guess is the point of making the split public. We'll done OP, for helping them along.

Tiredforfive45 · 14/08/2024 17:33

Look on the bright side…Surely it’s quite reassuring that this is a top news story, rather than some other awful thing that could have impacted negatively on many people’s lives.

A slow news day is a good news day.

Feliciacat · 14/08/2024 17:33

So. If you’re any kind of fan of Love Island then this is huge news. I agree that it doesn’t justify being a headline when so many atrocities are going on in the world. You are totally correct really.

I think the BBC are catering to what people are interested in and there are many people aged 16-30 who’d be all over that. It shouldn’t be big news but I understand why they’ve put it as such if that makes sense.

I’m honoured that you think my thread is as far reaching as BBC news 😘

Well what else is there to report? That reported deaths in Gaza are now at 40,000? That these are still countries that haven't signed the declaration prohibiting attacks on schools, students in war? That yet another settlement, Nahal Heletz, is being build? Cheaper groceries (that poor families in uk depend on) have increased in price faster than more expensive products? Naaa! Let them read celebrity news

Feliciacat · 14/08/2024 17:51

Starlingexpress · 14/08/2024 17:34

Why is it big news though?

It’s because Mollie-Mae and Tommy were the only couple from Love Island to get married and have a baby (as far as I know). It’s a lot of young girls’ idea of a fairy tale romance. They were extremely prolific; Tommy is a boxer and Mollie-Mae is a fashion designer off the back of her Love Island stint.

I absolutely agree with yours and other people’s sentiment that the priorities are wrong though! Especially about Gaza.

Feliciacat · 14/08/2024 17:53

There’s a massive thread on Telly Addicts (a Mumsnet sub-forum) about this topic actually. Head to there if you want to see the perspective I’m talking about.

MarmitePizza · 14/08/2024 17:53

I have no clue who either of them are (other than I have heard of Tyson Fury and guessed he may be related). I got a BBC news alert to my phone about this - ridiculous.

redalex261 · 14/08/2024 17:55

Never heard of Mollie Mae or Tommy whatsit. Could not give a fuck about their relationship status. Agree it is not news, certainly not headline news on BBC.

Neveranynamesleft · 14/08/2024 17:56

State of the world today and this is headline news. Absolutely ridiculous beyond words.

Agree!

After watching that devastating story about the man in Gaza who went to pick up his twin's birth certificates and came back to his bombed house and his precious family killed....

I could do with a bit of light celebrity news.

Nor me. I guess it’s two wannabes trying to boost their (non)celebrity status?
Definitely isn’t headline news by any stretch of the imagination.

DownNative · 14/08/2024 17:58

Very doubt the world is paying much attention to that.

Western media I've no doubt will be which would suggest that would be a reflection on Western society itself.

Any ideas what you feel it shows about the West? Entitled? Short attention span? Other?

Yes, I think there is definitely an element of the BBC and Western media in general catering to multiple different audiences.

This would be one example catered to a specific audience and another unrelated headline would be catered to a completely different target audience.

News media can cater to more than one audience at the same time....right?

FourChimneys · 14/08/2024 18:05

It popped up on my phone as breaking news. I'd not heard of either of them (the joys of not owning a TV are boundless) so just rolled my eyes and scrolled on.

Superhansrantowindsor · 14/08/2024 18:05

Absolutely ridiculous. I have no idea who they are and even if I did, their romantic status is none of my business.

sanityisamyth · 14/08/2024 18:12

Never heard of either of them and wondered why I needed to know about their lives!
