To feel relieved and optimistic that we finally have a PM who knows something about something

So impressed to see the speed rioters are being dealt with. We have someone at the helm who knows something about the law. As opposed to the series of buffoons we have had in recent years who literally don't know how to pay for something in a petrol station, let alone how to manage a pandemic. And the worst of it was they were so thick they didn't even know that they didn't know.

I think Starmer knows what he knows, if you get my meaning -he has his areas of expertise, and will know when he needs to refer to someone else's area of expertise.

I feel more optimistic now than I have done for a very long time

Well he is going to of course come down on these particular rioters like a tonne of bricks isn't he? I am not particularly impressed that they've been sped so speedily through the legal system when victims of much more serious crimes can wait years for justice.

Since you know so much about the criminal justice system and it's workings, why don't you explain the difference in sentencing when defendants have admitted affray etc to a trial where the defendant has pleaded not guilty for murder and why you expect both of those to take the same amount of time to go through the courts?

Two tier Kier is aptly named.

If only you could spell his name correctly.

bombastix · 12/08/2024 23:08

I agree OP. It feels… novel.

StuckOnTheCeiling · 12/08/2024 23:12

Yep, feels like we have actual grown ups in charge for once. I’m cautiously optimistic.

And where did I talk about murder trial in post? Please dont try and over dramatise to make a point. These people have been sentenced within a fortnight, that is much quicker than plenty of other more serious crimes that have been queuing in the system.

I thought it was a fair challenge actually which your reply does not address with any specifics.

Whats the specifics needed? Labour have publicly patted themselves on the back at the fact that these sentences have been sped through so quickly. I don't believe its fair that these particular criminals get fast tracked through so the government can make political capital.

But this is political. That poster asked you to contrast two criminal scenarios and consider why they might be different. That was the point you didn’t address

Are you joking...it was 2010 and David Cameron didn't have a fucking clue

Are you joking...the riots were August 2011 and by midday 12 October a total of 1,984 defendants had arrived at court for an initial hearing.

I must say I don’t think I’ve seen the Police or CPS move so fast in a long time. Which of course don’t get it twisted is certainly no bad thing. However I take the back log is almost sorted out then. Surely they’d have to deal with all that first, would they not.

bumblebee1000 · 12/08/2024 23:28

Now he needs to stop the boats and male migrants...finally the Guardian and bbc have had to admit that over 80% are not genuine refugees...mostly lads who will join mafia clans here or other crime syndicates etc...as an ex greenham common activist, am apalled at the attacks on women etc going on in ireland by many new males but at least they are doing some protesting !!...incidents in germany and sweden were covered up for years and now they have strong right wing movements or govts as a result of this pc nonsense.

tennesseewhiskey1 · 12/08/2024 23:28

This isn’t the first thread about exactly the same topic …..

macaroniandcheeze · 12/08/2024 23:29

It’s nice to have a grown up in charge, finally

bombastix · 12/08/2024 23:30

Yes but they have been running 24 hours and the police had all their leave cancelled! You cannot run the system like this all the time. And many offenders have convicted themselves by social media, tech and phone usage. Much easier to track and identify people.

Most criminals are not that stupid, frankly

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 12/08/2024 23:31

The thing is they've just launched a very quick turn around scheme to release prisoners early, to a very understaffed and over stretched probation service (not heard about any pay rises for them incidentally....) and all of a sudden it's back to lock them up 3/4 year sentences. So just refilling the scant prison capacity they're creating. Also under SDS40 most will be eligible for HDC around the 25% mark. So a 2 year sentence is suddenly 6 months in custody and then out to a beleaguered probation officer on 200% capacity, throw in 'probation reset' and they won't even be supervised for the final third or for any post sentence supervision. It's smoke and mirrors.

Yes because i was never contrasting a murder trial with the rioters in my original comment. Murder trials make up a very small percentage of trials at court, plenty of trails at the other end of the spectrum will have been leap frogged over for the rioters and i think that is wrong.

And I suspect you're being purposefully obtuse.

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 12/08/2024 23:34

In my area at the moment even a breach of a community order is taking around 3 months to get to court. Crown court trials 18-14 months for listing. Mags somewhere between the two, so yes these rioters will either be pushing other cases further back, or just costing a fortune in extended court hours and overtime

I agree. If the rioters hadn't been dealt with in the way they were, the far right/conservative voters would be having a field day with criticisms at the lack of action etc. Yet here we have rioters charged, convicted & sentenced within a week and what a surprise! It's still not good enough! "Two tier Kier" gets trotted out. This is definitely a case of them being unable to win no matter what they do.

I’m glad they’re getting jail time, but Who are they letting out to make room for them. I pray it’s the poor bloke who can’t pay their Council Tax and not a load disgusting Paedophile’s and r*ists
