So so overwhelmed ☹️☹️

Sorry posting for traffic. I need motivation and well god knows what else.

My mental health is rock bottom. I am a hoarder. I live in absolute squalor.

Today is the day I need to blast through the clutter. The junk. The piles of clothes. The piles of rubbish. The empty packaging and empty boxes. Empty cups. Some mouldy. I know how gross this is.

I am overwhelmed I’ve allowed it to get to this point. I can’t see my floors. Dust is everywhere. No wonder I’m constantly run down and have allergies.

It’s all m fault. Everything is filthy. I’m so ashamed and embarrassed.

It’s just me though. No kids. No pets. No partner. So im not putting anyone else through this hell. My friends don’t know. They’ve never seen it.

I’ve made a start. I’ve almost filled a roll of bin liners up to take to the tip. Cardboard boxes ready to be ripped up for the recycling box. I can now see a fraction of my wooden floor.

But by God. It’s hard. So hard. This is just a quick break to write this and have a drink. (Of tea) now I’ll be back to it and hopefully finish one room by this evening.

I don’t even know why I’ve posted here. But if you’re this far, thanks for reading.

Well done OP!! You've done a fantastic job today!

My stepdad is a hoarder and has started cleaning out his garage recently and I'm so proud of him, I'm glad you've got your Mum to support you.

LemonadeQueen · 09/08/2024 21:33

Love this!

Nannylovesshopping · 09/08/2024 21:33

BronwenFrideswide · 09/08/2024 21:36

What a fantastic update @SoEffingOverwhelmed and you absolutely should be proud, very proud, of yourself.

LovePoppy · 09/08/2024 21:38

What a fantastic day you had @SoEffingOverwhelmed!!!

Icanttakethisanymore · 09/08/2024 21:41

Well done OP! You know you can do this - keep at it xx

Butchyrestingface · 09/08/2024 21:41

@SoEffingOverwhelmed I have hoarder like tendencies, hoarder-adjacent I would call myself. So sympathise tremendously.

I tend to collect clothes, specifically bags. I found setting up an account on Depop and Vinted and actually starting to sell my massive hoard of stuff was really motivating. The process of having to photograph, write descriptions, package things up, was quite laborious. And then the frustration of having to let go of tagged/never worn items for a fraction of what I paid for them ... But I feel like it has helped 'reset' my brain somewhat - made me less inclined to keep buying more stuff and bringing it into the house, which can only be a good thing.

The major issue there though is that stuff on online selling sites doesn't necessarily shift fast, and you seem to have made a great start at bagging up your clutter and hopefully - getting it out of the house. So I would only really recommend the above for someone who's already made some head way in getting rid of their clutter. Best of luck.

Get some help. Two unrelated cleaners. If you're feeling embarrassed just say this was a relatives place she died and I'm cleaning it out to live in. Well done congratulations and I hope it all goes well just think of it as the start of a new life.

Maria1979 · 09/08/2024 21:47

It's so hard to not get overwhelmed. I am not a hoarder but I am really lousy at keeping things in order. Im trying and it just gets messy again. Sometimes I just want to throw everything out but I cant because It's all things we need at some point. Bravo for the beginning of a better life!❤️

Fannyfiggs · 09/08/2024 21:51

@SoEffingOverwhelmed I think you should change your name to SOEFFINGAMAZING! ⭐ 👑

mightymam · 09/08/2024 21:55

Well fucking done @SoEffingOverwhelmed! I blitzed my bedroom yesterday and I swear last night was the best sleep I had in a long time. You'll be sleeping like a baby tonight! Keep going and start on other areas that need tackling.

forgotmypassagain · 09/08/2024 22:01

You are brilliant OP and you’ve inspired me to get stuck into my house tomorrow!

get a good sleep tonight.

Sending love and a huge huge well done.

Marine30 · 09/08/2024 22:07

Ah that’s wonderful OP. I’m so pleased for you. Seems like you’ve made a real break through and mum sounds like a legend too👍 👏

reelcat · 09/08/2024 22:10

You have done so well in just a day. You will feel amazing once it's done!

Hagr1d · 09/08/2024 23:06

Well done! The hardest bit was getting started and you've done that so now just keep going!! (After a good night's sleep in your clean and tidy bedroom!)

Summerhopesanddreams · 09/08/2024 23:07

Wow, well done, sounds like you’re doing a great job!

I’m sat here with a smile on my face thinking about all the positivity and happiness you have coming your way.

I’m sure you will feel much more relaxed in a clean and clutter free environment.

Please don’t beat yourself up about what’s happened, you can’t change the past so don’t give any time to those negative thoughts.

Just focus on enjoying life and take pleasure from the small things like being able to sleep in your own bed again.

keep going, you’ve got this!

Hello all you lovely people 😊

A progress update. (8 hours after I started on my bedroom) it is done. Still needs a thorough deep clean, skirting boards, inside wardrobes etc. BUT all the crap has gone into bags. I can see and walk on the floor again. It’s dusted, and hoovered. Bedding in the wash waiting to be changed.

After my last update I ran out of bin bags. And instead of doing the total normal adult thing to do like popping to the shop for some more, I cried. Called my mum, and cried more. She was right round with stacks of bags. She knows I’ve been struggling mentally for a while but probably not this bad. Anyway with her help, one room is done. She is an angel, and wasn’t phased in the slightest like I thought she would be.

Just wanted to say another massive thank you to every single one of you that has taken the time out to send you encouragements and offers to help me. It is so appreciated, and has been a huge help.

I will read every message again and again. And then some more.

To anyone who is going through similar - if I can make a start and a change -then you can too!

Bath is running then going to have some dinner

Amazing. You kept going despite setbacks and you reached out for help. Determination, tenacity and courage. Pull on those qualities you have again when you need them. Hope you had a lovely sleep. 😊

TadpolesInPool · 10/08/2024 06:25

Fantastic OP well done!

Of course you rang your mum! That's what mums are there for!

If you want some more motivation then look up clutterbug. Shes on youtube and does podcasts too. She has ADHD and is a former hoarder turned organiser. (She also does some cleaning videos which are great cos she hates cleaning so is very relatable).

She has loads of different videos but in several she mentions how she used to just have channels in all her stuff to be able to walk from her bed to the bathroom and to the kitchen. She had moudly food on plates in the oven and cupboards cos she would just shove stuff out of sight. So she really does understand and used to live like that.

Good luck with the rest. Be ambitious but don't be too hard on yourself if you slip up. Look up decluttering videos on youtube to keep you motivated (I listen to them whilst I declutter).

Wigtopia · 10/08/2024 07:12
