Made a bolognaise pasta sauce type thing with 1 kg of minced beef steak.
Onions, peppers and mushrooms added.
Have come home from work and DH and DS 18 have polished the bloody lot off leaving me with a measly ladle full of sauce
( pasta was cooked separately for clarification)
They are most of that too

Are the people eating these quantities very overweight or very tall out of curiosity? I had an ex who was very tall and ate very large amounts because he needed to.

AprilShowerslastforHours · 08/08/2024 19:38

Please don’t cook for them tomorrow. When they ask where dinner is point out they ate it. You cooked enough for tonight and tomorrow so you wouldn’t have to cook two days running. Therefore they can provide Friday’s dinner.

Pleasegodgotosleep · 08/08/2024 19:39

I would use 1 kg mince, couple of onions, 4 - 5 grated cartots, punnet of mushrooms and that would make 4 big tubs. Each tub feeding 2 adults and 2 kids. Eaten with pasta and salad that's more than enough meat per person. If I wanted to make it go further I'd either add red lentils to the bolegnese or add peppers, sweetcorn, mixed beans and spaces to make chilli.

Comparing how many people 500 grams of mince would feed is really irrelevant.

I can cook 500 grams and it will be enough for 3 hungry adults or teenagers. Or I can batch cook and bulk it out with carrots, lots of chopped vegetables and chopped tomatoes etc and it will feed many more.

It’s impossible to compare. Does your family consist of hungry teenagers and people who burn calories at work or is it elderly people not eating much or people working from home or sitting still most of the day,

True but OP has said it had onion, mushrooms and peppers ?I think) so assume slightly bulked out with veg, and it was 2 people with manual jobs.

Even with that info. almost 1kg of meat (excluding veg and pasta) is a HUGE volume to eat by almost all standards.

This reminds me of when I met my husband. He used to go to a farm shop who did a deal on buying 5lbs of mince. He used to cook all 5lbs into a bolognaise, then he'd get a grand total of 5 servings out of it all. For himself.

I remember being horrifed! He was shocked to hear that eating 1lb of mince in one meal for one person was not normal.

I made him my bolognaise with 1lb of mince, I served, we had a portion each together, then I portioned the leftovers into 3 spare tubs for the freezer. His mind was blown.

He now makes his mince go further...

It is indeed. I was thinking more of some of the people commenting though.

It’s not how much they ate that makes them greedy, it’s not leaving any for you that does.

I completely agree!

I would hate to get home from work expecting a decent meal, only to find out someone had eaten most of it.

It’s one thing to have a big appetite but it’s just plain greedy to not leave enough for the other person.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 08/08/2024 19:46

Virtually a kilo of meat between two of them?? Bloody hell! What a pair of pigs!

Not the point, I know, but next time you make bol, OP, stretch the mince with red lentils and plenty of finely chopped veg.

cannellonies · 08/08/2024 19:48

What veg do you use apart from carrots, celery, onions and lentils out of interest?

Finely chopped mushrooms or aubergines work well. Add some fresh tomatoes and a good glug of red wine.

Wow-I use 500g mince and that feeds 6 of us for two separate meals. That’s a huge amount of food. And yes I have boy teenagers in that mix

40g of mince each per meal?

MorvernBlack · 08/08/2024 19:53

My DH does stuff like this. We can't have meals where you help yourself from serving bowls, as he will take more than his share. Plus I will cook extra, so I have a meal sorted for another day and then find he's gone back for seconds and polished it all off.
He is morbidly obese, before anyone suggests he's being deprived.

The aubergines growing in our garden will soon be ready, I might try that then.

Silvers11 · 08/08/2024 19:58

No question about it. They are greedy buggers - and selfish too not to have asked whether it was needed for you or for other meals

My husband and I and both of average weight and height - I'm 5' 6" and he is 6'1". We're not particularly active, my husband is retired and I'm semi retired, so we're both knocking on a bit.

If I'm making bolognese I would add a couple of onions, three largeish carrots, lots of tomatoes, and a glass of red wine. I would also use 500g of mince if I'm making a cottage pie for the two of us, or a chilli. I've always allowed for 250g of meat per person for a main meal.

allthemiddlechildrenoftheworld · 08/08/2024 20:02

@Fleurdalys so they each ate 1lb of mince and you got the remaining 0.2lb!!! they are really awfully inconsiderate!!! I wouldnt be making them any food for the next week!!!

Waffle78 · 08/08/2024 20:03

Yep their greedy barstewards I hope you ordered yourself a takeaway and eat it in front of them.

Runnerinthenight · 08/08/2024 20:03

Its both greedy and ver inconsiderate of them, id be raging!
I am however astounded how far some posters can make 500g of mince stretch…

^This!! I use 2kgs of minced steak for 5! Now there's usually some leftovers, but...!!

My spag bol is legendary in our house!

Put what you want for you in lunch boxes before you eat, and leave what’s left?

There is no way in hell my dh wouldn’t leave more than enough for whoever isn’t there to eat.

I used to have to freeze leftovers or GB ex would have it for breakfast. He was also really stingy contributing to food. So I wasn't letting him have more than his fair share.

I’m sure her spag bog was much nicer than a takeaway tbf.

Finely chopped mushrooms.

I’ve also been known to add very finely chopped swede. A good knife is essential!

LoneHydrangea · 08/08/2024 20:10

Gluttons. And inconsiderate.

cannellonies · 08/08/2024 20:10

If there is only a little bit bolognese left it’s delicious on white bread with a sliced tomato and cheese, grilled in the oven.
