Or are they just greedy bastards?

Made a bolognaise pasta sauce type thing with 1 kg of minced beef steak.
Onions, peppers and mushrooms added.
Have come home from work and DH and DS 18 have polished the bloody lot off leaving me with a measly ladle full of sauce
( pasta was cooked separately for clarification)
They are most of that too

I don’t get it really. On other threads we see folks writing they can eat a large pizza and a portion of Ben and jerrys. There’s a thread on a lone woman getting an Indian takeaway and folks are saying get curry, rice, chips AND naan, and on here 1kg is 8-12 portions and the men are greedy bastards.

Apparently mince and chicken feeds the 5000 but a box of six donuts is a single portion.

Eh? 😂😂

Ladymeade · 09/08/2024 19:26

Selfish twats! What exactly did they think you were going to have for dinner?

The OP said that the amount that had been left was enough for her, so she wasn't left with nothing to eat.

Well there’s can and there’s should.

Can some people ridiculously overeat - yes. Should 2 people be eating 1kg meat plus pasta - no. Even if large and doing a physical job and I’m not a magic MN chicken believer.

Olympic athletes competing in endurance sports are barely eating that much per day.

Haffiana · 09/08/2024 22:10

newrubylane · 09/08/2024 19:18

The average adult needs 45g to 55g of protein per day.

You need to educate yourself on the difference between meat and protein. They are not the same thing at all.

Thought she said, a portion of sauce (measly ladle of sauce and no meat) and also implied there wasn't much pasta either?

spikeandbuffy24 · 09/08/2024 22:41

@seriesoffortunateevents I think that's the difference between every day and occasional

Like tonight I have eaten a full (Aldi!) pizza
If I was getting a takeaway I would get enough for leftovers the next day so I got free delivery!

But I've I'm making cottage pie or lasagne I'm using 500g mince for 5 portions and it's not stingy. I have salad with the lasagne and extra veg with the cottage pie, plus you've got the onion and stuff in it plus pasta/potato

I batch cook a LOT and weigh everything to split it equally and each portion ends up being about 400-500g total so similar to a ready meal

anon666 · 09/08/2024 22:49

Omg I use 500g and that makes enough for at least three meals for three of us. One tonight, one in the fridge for tomorrow and one in the freezer for later.

So I would get 18 portions from that. 🤯

What Mathematical land do you live in?

Um, one where 3x3 = 9. And 9x2 = 18.

It’s not really about the quantity- it’s about the selfishness. Plenty of other posters have joined in to regale us with stories about their ridiculously selfish menfolk as well. It’s really depressing. I’m pretty sure there hasn’t been one instance on this thread of a woman taking more than her fair share (happy to be corrected though).

DominiqueBernard · 09/08/2024 23:20

We buy 400g steak mince and cook with 2 peppers, (tomato sauce and herbs) and with lasagne sheets and béchamel (500ml. milk) it makes 6 portions for DH, DD12, DD11 and me. So yes that's greedy, but the problem is that they left so little for you...so thoughtless.

Thesecretingredientiscrime · 09/08/2024 23:23

anon666 · 09/08/2024 23:10

Um, one where 3x3 = 9. And 9x2 = 18.

Alrighty then. How does that work? It's either nine or it's a bonkers claim of mince for 27 meals.
Three meals tonight = 3.
3 meals tomorrow = 3.
And three meals frozen = 3.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 09/08/2024 23:30

I think the PP means 3 meals tonight, 3 meals tomorrow and 3 meals frozen from 500g of mince so double that with a kg i.e. 18. I'd struggle to get 9 from 500g but everyone adds various amounts of other stuff which might bulk it out.

DancingPhantomsOnTheTerrace · 09/08/2024 23:31

@Thesecretingredientiscrime
Yes she means she gets 9 meals from 500g (3 meals times 3 nights), and the OP used 1kg, so that would be 18 meals.

@Sweetpeasaremadeforbees OK, thanks both for clarifying. The maths makes sense now.
I'm still massively side-eyeing it, but fair enough.

Yeah, sorry. I posted before rtft, so didn't realise what I'd walked in to.

I can understand why it was confusing.

Also it sounds like bullshit, but we are really small eater. Very slender husband, menopausal short dieting wife, two tiny slender girls, one veggie.

I had no idea our portions were such outliers, but I do try to batch cook, and reduce our intake of red meat. So the mince is more like one of the flavourings than necessarily a full protein portion.

I'm making us sound like a bunch of frugal, healthy weirdos, maybe we are.

Growlybear83 · 09/08/2024 23:47

@Ladymeade this is what the OP said

To be honest what they left for me was enough for me
It's more I was hoping it would feed 3 people tomorrow too!

I once cooked an entire side of salmon, left it in the oven and went for a shower. It was to be mixed with quinoa, veg and portioned out for a week. Came downstairs and my OH was finishing it off. The whole.bloody thing. He doesn't like salmon much. If I am cooking I need to be there at plating up or he would eat everything - literally everything in the pans or in the oven. It's insane.

Jesus. Is he the Tiger Who Came to Tea? Does he drink all the water in the tap as well?

Seriously, that’s terrible.

Thesecretingredientiscrime · 08/08/2024 18:21

Controversial mince opinions... 👀
If we did 500g of mince, we'd make a bulked out bolognese with lots of tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, plus finely diced carrots and red peppers. It does for about eight adult portions, half of which we freeze.

Teens and adults need around 50g protein per day. Minced beef has around 14g per 100g. Those of you bulking it out might not be getting enough protein.

Overnightoats1 · 10/08/2024 00:31

1kg of mince feeds 5 of us twice and I have 3 DC (8-12)! I usually make 1kg and feed half and freeze half for another meal.. Awful of them to not have dished up for you and kept yours to one side.. Even if they had cooked it - they still should have kept yours to one side - I think it's even worse that it's a meal you prepared! I'd definitely sit them both down and have a chat about being so thoughtless and how it's made you feel.. it's these little things that add up.. sorry OP- I'd be very angry and upset.

Anyway, they make cheese, ham salad wraps every morning at 6 am to take to work
I've frozen every bloody wrap in the house
Good luck with that at 6am

Bravo! 🤩 I love this level of pettiness! And the beauty of this is you can say “oh, they were starting to go stale, so I was trying to save them for you”.

It accounts for one meal though. You can bulk out bolognese with decent stuff and get plenty of protein elsewhere.

Yes but lentils have way less protein than meat so you need to factor that in if you're feeding teens especially if they do sports.

Dreamskies · 10/08/2024 01:35

HunterDuke · 08/08/2024 21:17

@CluelessAboutBiology he was sheepish but not massively contrite about the amount. He was more upset that I was supposed to have some (all week) and now didn't. He must have been really hungry. If I'd have said, he wouldn't have touched it. I didn't think it needed saying. I am now just explicit when it's not for him.

But you also said he’d do this every time if you’re not there at dishing up…. that he’d eat everything there was in the pans/oven. That’s not a one off, that’s selfish pig behaviour.

Tessabelle74 · 10/08/2024 01:46

Good grief! I use 500g of mince for 6 of us, 2 adults 2 adult sized teens and 2 younger kids! I'd be raging if they ate all that and didn't leave me any!
