Feels like there's way too many Men on MN

I probably am being unreasonable however I'm on here primarily for female perspectives.

OP posts:
Sfxde24 · 08/08/2024 07:05

The name of this site has always struck me as very wrong. Most of the stuff I post and consume has nothing to do with being a mum.

AGodawfulsmallaffair · 08/08/2024 07:08

ElleintheWoods · 08/08/2024 00:22

What's wrong with being inclusive and just accepting everyone who wants to contribute?

Frankly there is no other British discussion forum with this level of activity and many popular threads have nothing to do with being a woman/mum. Eg the parking ones, the current riots ones, etc.

Exactly. Thank you.

There's plenty of childfree posters on here too.

Despite the site being "by parents for parents", you don't need to be one to contribute to most threads.

Perhaps Mumsnet should undergo a rebranding similar to Twitter/x.

Any suggestions?

If they follow the Elon Musk way of thinking then perhaps it should be XXXYnet.

Boomer55 · 08/08/2024 07:20

Gransnet has plenty of young women on there, and some men. This site has older people and childless people on it. Different opinions and perspectives can be interesting - otherwise sites become echo chambers,🤷‍♀️

Babaquestions · 08/08/2024 07:25

Mumsnet is a parenting forum so dads are welcome.

'Mumsnet makes parents' lives easier by pooling knowledge, advice and support on everything from conception to childbirth, from babies to teenagers.'

Peoplesnet obviously 🤣

Inclusive-net

TygerLyon · 08/08/2024 07:27

I generally don’t notice, but sometimes men come on and post in such a condescending “I’m a man, I’m here to settle this triviality that you women can’t possibly get your tiny brains around” kind of way that it’s obvious, and the fawning from some posters confirms it.

I’d far rather have a man free space, mainly because life experience has taught me to dislike most men, but I’m aware that’s a me issue.

Wheredidileavemycarkeys · 08/08/2024 07:29

This again? I suppose we’re due another “I don’t understand why there are child free women on MN” post as well 😂

Fluufer · 08/08/2024 07:31

I agree. So many of them come here not to seek opinions on parenting, but for conformation that they are right and their wife is wrong, then stomp off when it doesn't go that way. Then there's the "as a man..." who expect us to be oh so grateful for their contribution/solution.
The recent race riot threads have been absolutely overrun by vile misogynistic men too.

MattDamon · 08/08/2024 07:31

Yes OP, it's very noticeable. It feels concerted at times. Women post for support and instead they get very obvious mansplaining or responses blaming her for her 'choices'.

There is also a noticeable increase in comments minimising female boundaries, pushing pornsick attitudes (it's perfectly normal for a 15-year-old girl to have multiple sex partners, you're an interfering prude if you try to speak to her about it) and degrading women if they dare to want more than their obviously shite partner.

These kinds of comments have historically been challenged but there are so many now it feels like women are doing what they have always had to do: keep their heads down so as to not anger/attract the retribution of men.

Inclusive-net

Nice😁

savoycabbage · 08/08/2024 07:34

It's happened before and it passed eventually.

RainyWoodland · 08/08/2024 07:35

I see what seem to be full-time politically-motivated ‘troll-hunters’ on here, maybe left-wing activists? Who don’t seem to be mothers and who are quick to label people far right, racist, probably men, previously banned, if a poster isn’t enamoured with a certain perspective. They probably see ‘men’ in normal mothers, here to navigate motherhood, who don’t share their politics and they want them banned/starved from the support they can get from other mothers on the site.

These politically motivated types are going to perceive an uptick in ‘men’, because there are posters that disagree with them about the current tensions.

Having said that, I think it is better for this site to stick to its core user base- mothers, and discourage the people here for shits and giggles, who change the tone and emphasis - ie- attention-seeking, opinionated men and people without children who are here to lecture and put upon mothers.

SallyWD · 08/08/2024 07:38

The vast majority are women. I welcome men. It's a parenting site. Really useful for men to hear things from a female perspective and vice versa

Shiningout · 08/08/2024 07:38

Try going on the sex board... 90 percent of posters are men 🤢

Urgh. I think I’ll stay away, thanks. 🤢

Talk about a stretch. Must be hard work being in your head.

Leanmeansmitingmachine · 08/08/2024 08:20

It doesn’t bother me that we have men here. But what does bother me is the few incels and trolls and creepy fuckers trying to get stories from people.

It’s a lot easier than having your irritability.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 08/08/2024 08:22

Not keen on the ones who hang about on the sex board only and then send you PMs, apart from those, I don't care

Rather depends on their motive for being here. Most are fine I’m sure, but there’s plenty with nefarious reasons for being here.

bluebee17 · 08/08/2024 08:27

MN was not designed for women. It was designed for parents.

Clawdy · 08/08/2024 08:27

Years ago there was a "short story for children " competition on here, with the winning story to be published. I entered, and so did a friend. Have to say, we were both a bit annoyed when the winner was a man!

User56785 · 08/08/2024 08:30

I haven't noticed any men who want to hear things from a female's perspective on here? What threads have you seen that on?

Shoeboxcat · 08/08/2024 08:30

No men would mean no PigletJohn, and no one wants that!
