To not want to buy property for fear of WW3?

Hi all,

I’m finally getting to a stage where I’ve saved enough for a house deposit, earn well in a remote finance job and am willing to leave London to go to South Yorkshire and buy a house.

Then a niggling thought in my mind says, if your house is destroyed in WW3, all your savings will go down the drain and you will be left destitute.

I appreciate that it’s a crazy thought to have but Iran and Israel are at each other’s throats and Russia has no intention of backing out of Ukraine. When people had their cities bombed in the past, how did they survive?

Tell me if I’m being unreasonable? If so, why?

If there is WW3 the house and money would be the last thing you'd care about - food, water, protection would be your main concern.

Imperrysmum · 07/08/2024 22:08

Hmmmm won’t you have house insurance.

what if there’s a cyber attack (equally likely) and your digital bank balance is deleted :D

don let fear stop you from living your life. The worst things usually only happen in our heads :-)

Drogdab · 07/08/2024 22:08

Your house may survive WW3 for one

Drogdab · 07/08/2024 22:08

And yes you would have more important things to worry about.

Singleaftermarriage · 07/08/2024 22:09

Ww3 will be nuclear. You won't be here so won't need a house!

Not necessarily. If my savings are liquid, then I can pay to escape somewhere safer. If they’re locked in a mortgage then I’m no better off than a poor person.

But what about if you buy a house then get hit by a bus?

You really cant live like this OP

Have to say I laughed out loud at your calm and reassuring manner there!

MyOtherCarisAVauxhallZafira · 07/08/2024 22:13

I live on the outskirts of London, in an area heavily bombed in ww2 especially, my house has survived two world wars and so has most of my neighbourhood.
So your panic around this even happening (ww3) is irrational, then add onto that even if there was a ww3 what are the chances of a random part of Yorkshire being targeted, it's not like you're moving to downing street, and then add on even by some crazy long shot ww3 does happen and Yorkshire undergoes the modern equivalent of the blitz, your house will still probably be fine.

Chypre · 07/08/2024 22:14

We've deliberately left London because of WW3 fears, after being actively involved in "extraction" of our friends out of Ukraine with a newborn - it took them 75 hours with no water, food, fuel or cell signal. It became very clear, that best thing is to stay away from big cities divided by river. In own property away from big cities, you can plan as you please - to stay put or bug out. The WW3 of now is more about cyber attacks, disinformation campaigns and small drones anyway, not Blitzkrieg.

OneTC · 07/08/2024 22:14

Buy one with a bunker

Somehow in my mind, WW3 is much more likely to happen than being hit by a bus 😅 It’s crazy, I know.

WW3 - Where are you escaping to ? And how do you plan to get there 😂

TheYearOfSmallThings · 07/08/2024 22:15

I think the question is, what will happen if WW3 doesn't start. You keep on renting, house prices rise over time, the value of your savings is nibbled away by inflation and in 20 years time where will you be?

We tend to consider the risk of taking an action while failing to recognise the risk of inaction.

ChickenNuggetDreamland · 07/08/2024 22:16

Well, the house I live in survived WW1 and WW2...so you'll probably be alright.

Like a refugee? Good luck to you if other countries return the favour like we do.

You know this an irrational worry, right?

America- somewhere remote and with a good enough climate- no tornadoes, hurricanes or earthquakes.

If you survive you can claim on the insurance.
In WW2 people with spare bedrooms were forced to take in evacuees so maybe you could end up with some more Londoners with you in Yorkshire.

I honestly thought I was prone to worrying but this has literally never occurred to me before. I think the chances of you living to rue home ownership in a post apocalyptic world are slim enough to discount.

Exactly. I half think this is a wind up.

Didshejustsaythatoutloud · 07/08/2024 22:20

We're a' doomed!!
Don't do anything, sit in yer wee house rocking back n forth.
Don't do anything
Nothing

blackcherryconserve · 07/08/2024 22:20

This is just nuts.

LiterallyOnFire · 07/08/2024 22:20

If there's going to be a world war, being a tenant through it will just be an extra layer of aggro.
