To not want to buy property for fear of WW3?

Hi all,

I’m finally getting to a stage where I’ve saved enough for a house deposit, earn well in a remote finance job and am willing to leave London to go to South Yorkshire and buy a house.

Then a niggling thought in my mind says, if your house is destroyed in WW3, all your savings will go down the drain and you will be left destitute.

I appreciate that it’s a crazy thought to have but Iran and Israel are at each other’s throats and Russia has no intention of backing out of Ukraine. When people had their cities bombed in the past, how did they survive?

Tell me if I’m being unreasonable? If so, why?

Banks have more than one copy of data. There re very sophisticated back up schemes, so no your bank balance cannot be wiped by an attack

PerfectTravelTote · 07/08/2024 22:36

This is the family gathering I'm picturing

To not want to buy property for fear of WW3?
brightyellowflower · 07/08/2024 22:36

Build a bunker. That's your only hope. But in fairness, needs to be pretty big. Quite a logistical undertaking.

Honestly, unless you're a billionaire, you've got no hope anyway so no point worrying!

TinyTornado · 07/08/2024 22:36

If you are worried about ww3, I think Yorkshire would be one of the better places to be. I’d also consider Wales and Scotland.
Get somewhere a fair way from the major cities, and you have a lot of mountain between you and any blast.
if you can get some where with a bit of land you can start doing some prepping- lack of food and water will kill more than any bombs do. Find somewhere with access to water and learn some animal husbandry and simple farming practices for self sufficiency.
Australia or NZ are widely considered to be among the best places to survive an apocalypse.

  • caveat - any info given here comes from reading too much dystopian fiction. :)
weathervane1 · 07/08/2024 22:36

And imagine if WW3 doesn't happen and you've wasted the chance to buy the house of your dreams ... and then the moment passes. You really can't live by "what ifs".

twentysevendresses · 07/08/2024 22:37

America???? 😵‍💫

I can tell that you've REALLY thought this through OP 👌🏻

America- somewhere remote and with a good enough climate- no tornadoes, hurricanes or earthquakes.

Good luck with that!

Your house may survive WW3 for one

Yes, the city I live in was bombed to high heaven but our current house has stood since 1900.

Sheri99 · 07/08/2024 22:39

Good choice but it is getting rather over crowded here! 😂

HappyLittleNarwhal · 07/08/2024 22:39

For goodness sake 😂

Vintagevixen · 07/08/2024 22:40

Um...if WW3 starts we're all dead. Just buy the house!

Do you mean America or Yorkshire?

MsCactus · 07/08/2024 22:40

I think to be safe you should buy three houses in different locations and an underground bunker

LadyRoughDiamond · 07/08/2024 22:42

Before you make a decision, spend some time reading a few history books (I recommend Andrew Marr, History of Modern Britain) and listening to podcasts (The Rest Is History - Dominic Sandbrook is fab). You’ll get more of a sense of how cyclical these things are; an idea of how the world has been through, and survived, so many peaks and troughs. It’s natural to be worried, but history gives us a great sense of perspective and of hope.

NannyGythaOgg · 07/08/2024 22:43

If WW3 hits, it will be the last thing on your mind (probably literally as you wont be here any more). If you are still here. The only people getting out will be those with MILLIONS in the bank - and that ain't you.

The superpowers (egomaniacal idiots) such as Putin and Trump are 100% bluffing because now ONE GOES, WE ALL GO. They are stupid in a different way to the rest of humanity BUT they do know the consequences.

Dinosaurs existed for millions of years and (as far as we know) were wiped out by a single cataclysmic event.

Live life for today (financially for your reasonably expected demise) but. A traffic accident is far more likely than a world event

America has all three of these things

Of course I know that, I meant a state in America that specifically doesn’t have these things 😊👍

Lovingsummers · 07/08/2024 22:44

You can't live like that. I'm not sure how much savings will be worth in the event of the scale you're worried about anyway.

Exactly 😆😆

OP, your mindset is akin to not leaving the house on the basis you might get struck by lightening, or get hit by a bus or a piano falls on your head.
Yes it might happen, but part of life in general is about appropriately managing risks & rewards.

AutumnLeaves5 · 07/08/2024 22:46

I think it’s more likely that America will have destroyed itself in a civil war before your house in Yorkshire gets bombed in WW3…

Vizella · 07/08/2024 22:19

America won’t be letting refugees in. And how are you going to get there, swim?

Terea · 07/08/2024 22:55

i think you should talk to your GP, not Mumsnet.

LovelyDaaling · 07/08/2024 22:56

You can't live your life thinking like this. Yorkshire won't be top of the hit list in WW3.

JustKeepSwimmingJust · 07/08/2024 23:00

It’s a very slim margin between a large majority of housing in the U.K. becomes uninhabitable and pounds Sterling have no more value than the ability to use them to start fires.

there is no point keeping hold of money which is intrinsically valueless and not having secure shelter, which has actual value.

Build up a liquid fund as well, but the mostly likely outcomes in order are that ww3 either won’t happen, won’t affect your specific house, or will cause a systemic collapse where we return to hunter gatherer living.

unless you want to move to a remote island in advance, just live your life.

Mirabai · 07/08/2024 23:02

You sound young. I remember thinking WW3 was coming in Gulf War 1. Still here and property is worth a helluva lot more than it was then.

maddening · 07/08/2024 23:04

If you own your own property you could build a bunker in the garden?
