To not want to buy property for fear of WW3?

Hi all,

I’m finally getting to a stage where I’ve saved enough for a house deposit, earn well in a remote finance job and am willing to leave London to go to South Yorkshire and buy a house.

Then a niggling thought in my mind says, if your house is destroyed in WW3, all your savings will go down the drain and you will be left destitute.

I appreciate that it’s a crazy thought to have but Iran and Israel are at each other’s throats and Russia has no intention of backing out of Ukraine. When people had their cities bombed in the past, how did they survive?

Tell me if I’m being unreasonable? If so, why?

Just when you think MN couldn’t possibly get any more batshit, someone surprises you.

Well done, OP. You’ve raised the bar.

wellington77 · 07/08/2024 23:37

I think you need to stop buying so much tin foil and wake up! There’s a reason we’ve had a cold and not hot war since after WW2. Mutually assured destruction…. Ignore the hysteria in the press

Terriblegizzard · 07/08/2024 22:20

I’ve not re-seeded my back lawn for the same reason. It’s a lot of work, and what’s the point if the Russian’s nuke it?

Edited

I think Monty Don did an episode on this recently 😂

America- somewhere remote and with a good enough climate- no tornadoes, hurricanes or earthquakes.

I don’t think they will let you in.

Not necessarily. If my savings are liquid, then I can pay to escape somewhere safer. If they’re locked in a mortgage then I’m no better off than a poor person.

Better to convert your money into something that will be useful post apocalyptic war. Bottled water is my go to. Small bottles that I will be able to barter for other things. And before anyone starts going on about plastic bottles and landfill can I just remind them that in a post nuclear world items in landfill will be a resource not a liability.

Snowless · 07/08/2024 23:52

Will money be worth anything if WW3, because if I had food I wouldn’t sell for a million pounds. It’s just plastic paper with no real value!

Money is virtual now.

Unless you keep your savings in cash under the bed, it won't survive the technological collapse should WW3 wipe out the banking and commerce computer systems.

RogueFemale · 07/08/2024 23:56

If you're that worried, rent a place on a remote Scottish island, and convert your cash savings into gold bullion. Then worry about where to stash your gold bullion safely.

Bouliegirl · 08/08/2024 00:01

You buying your house or not will make no difference in the event of WW3

Katemax82 · 08/08/2024 00:06

There won't be ww3 though will there? A nuclear bomb here and there would put an abrupt end to it

Isittimeformynapyet · 08/08/2024 00:13

PerfectTravelTote · 07/08/2024 22:31

How is America immune from WW3? Do you have a visa for America? Billionaires might have enough money to go wherever they want in the event of a large war but your house deposit isn't going to do the trick, especially if Stirling falls or there's a run on the bank.

At any given point in time there are wars going on somewhere in the world. Now is no different.

I can't see why Stirling would be any more vulnerable than any other Scottish city.

JMSA · 08/08/2024 00:15

I sometimes think that on Mumsnet, if there's nothing in life to worry about, some members will think of something anyway!
Sorry OP! Just try to enjoy this position you're in and don't let fear take over.

BBCONEANDTWO · 07/08/2024 22:08

If there is WW3 the house and money would be the last thing you'd care about - food, water, protection would be your main concern.

well that's a bit dim..how do you get food water and protection when it's in extremely short supply in a war situation? By spending money on it. A few thousand in the bank would be more useful in the immediate short term than a house that you can't sell

I have good enough survival skills to safely get myself water from nature, but everything would probably be so contaminated it would be beyond salvage. Any bottled supplies won't last long. If it came to a serious attack, it really doesn't matter what you do or don't have. We're all going to suffer. Might as well have enjoyed a nice house and garden while the going was good!

Cantrushart · 08/08/2024 00:20

You've got two choices, convert your savings into gold or buy shares in arms manufacturing companies. The second one might be more reliable.

RedToothBrush · 08/08/2024 00:21

So where are you going to live DURING WWII?

I mean you are either going to die or still need somewhere to live.

Everyone else with a mortgage would have similar issues about how they pay. The banks aren't just going to kick everyone out. Who is going to enforce it? Squat for a few years.

You'll be destitute but have somewhere to live!

Waterway · 08/08/2024 00:21

If ww3 starts who says you’re even able to get to America? Or that they wouldn’t also be involved.

not buying a house on a fantasy ww3 situation is bonkers, if you have the opportunity to get out of renting don’t let this anxious thought stop you.

Sarahzb · 08/08/2024 00:22

Mate. Really? And Yellowstone could blow up...

lolit · 08/08/2024 00:33

Thanks op, I really needed this laugh

letsjustdothis · 08/08/2024 00:34

Just search for properties with cellars, you'll be fine.

Dobest · 08/08/2024 00:35

I'm starting to worry about WW4.

ZenNudist · 08/08/2024 00:37

Thinking about it my house has see 2 world wars, or the people who live here have.

You are nuts. Don't let fear rule your life.

Biggaybear · 08/08/2024 00:44

Vizella · 07/08/2024 22:14

Somehow in my mind, WW3 is much more likely to happen than being hit by a bus 😅 It’s crazy, I know.

Statistically its not.

I've always said to my kids not to do "what ifs". You think of 20 & I could think of 20 more. Just not worth it. Live your life & let things happen. You cant stop the world turning so why try.

Bellsbeachwaves · 08/08/2024 00:46

You'd own the land if your house got bombed if it's freehold

Bellsbeachwaves · 08/08/2024 00:48

Plus how do you know the computers or banks won't collapse in some ww3 apocalypse. Then where would your savings be?

...if you're going to really go for the slightly potentially irrational thinking...
