To not want to buy property for fear of WW3?

Hi all,

I’m finally getting to a stage where I’ve saved enough for a house deposit, earn well in a remote finance job and am willing to leave London to go to South Yorkshire and buy a house.

Then a niggling thought in my mind says, if your house is destroyed in WW3, all your savings will go down the drain and you will be left destitute.

I appreciate that it’s a crazy thought to have but Iran and Israel are at each other’s throats and Russia has no intention of backing out of Ukraine. When people had their cities bombed in the past, how did they survive?

Tell me if I’m being unreasonable? If so, why?

If you survive you can claim on the insurance.
In WW2 people with spare bedrooms were forced to take in evacuees so maybe you could end up with some more Londoners with you in Yorkshire.

I honestly thought I was prone to worrying but this has literally never occurred to me before. I think the chances of you living to rue home ownership in a post apocalyptic world are slim enough to discount.

😂Yes I imagine airbnb business will be booming in Yorkshire during WW3. I'll rent a room off you!

SaintHonoria · 07/08/2024 22:20

Buy it and build a secret bunker in the garden.

America- somewhere remote and with a good enough climate- no tornadoes, hurricanes or earthquakes.

Ahaha you cannot be serious!

Terriblegizzard · 07/08/2024 22:20

I’ve not re-seeded my back lawn for the same reason. It’s a lot of work, and what’s the point if the Russian’s nuke it?

Imperrysmum · 07/08/2024 22:08

Hmmmm won’t you have house insurance.

what if there’s a cyber attack (equally likely) and your digital bank balance is deleted :D

don let fear stop you from living your life. The worst things usually only happen in our heads :-)

Insurance doesn't cover damage caused by war.

WhatMe123 · 07/08/2024 22:21

And you think America is safe?
I'm a cbt therapist op and I think you may need to speak to someone about your worries, they're a tad out of control I'd say and I mean this in the nicest way possible 🙂

Like a refugee? Good luck to you if other countries return the favour like we do.

Most of South Yorkshire are very welcoming to refugees. Shame on the thugs who attacked their home.

Kipperthedawg · 07/08/2024 22:22

Ww3 is financial and tech based. I think we lost.

Vizella · 07/08/2024 22:10

Not necessarily. If my savings are liquid, then I can pay to escape somewhere safer. If they’re locked in a mortgage then I’m no better off than a poor person.

Liquid where though? Honestly, you're being barmy. Live your life and buy a place.

What? Really?
Clearly I've not been worrying enough and I'd better up my game.

America has all three of these things

Yeah because America definitely won't be involved in any war and they definitely don't have earthquakes, hurricanes or tornadoes 🙄 Safest place on earth...

Thedogscollar · 07/08/2024 22:26

Well on this logic I can sack off cutting the grass tomorrow.

NeighbourTrouble63 · 07/08/2024 22:27

You need to consider getting help for your anxiety OP. This is overthinking to an alarming and illogical extent.

If war breaks out in a country, it could cause a catastrophic amount of damage that would likely bankrupt the insurance company if it were on the hook to cover such damages.

Also the damage from war or related activities can be so vast and unpredictable that even high premiums might not be enough to cover the damage that insurance companies are liable for.

Singleaftermarriage · 07/08/2024 22:09

Ww3 will be nuclear. You won't be here so won't need a house!

This is the logic I use with DH when he starts wittering about stock piling and growing our own food.

If WW3 kicks off ain’t nobody got no time for that. 1 poof and we’re all gone.

Ted27 · 07/08/2024 22:28

I live in Coventry, both houses I have owned were damaged in the Blitz. They are still standing over 70 years later and will probably outlast me

Vizella · 07/08/2024 22:28

blackcherryconserve · 07/08/2024 22:20

This is just nuts.

For once, I feel great about someone telling me I’m nuts to think the way I do. It’s great to hear from some rational and sane person.

The truth is, my siblings keep mentioning this at family gatherings and it terrifies me. I tell them to stop, but they keep going on about it, even having fantasies of what role they would play in the war effort… now THAT is bonkers 😮

ChickenNuggetDreamland · 07/08/2024 22:16

Well, the house I live in survived WW1 and WW2...so you'll probably be alright.

The problem with this logic is that, if your house hadn’t survived the war, you obviously wouldn’t be living in it. If you live in an old house, then by definition it survived WW2. It doesn’t tell you anything about the probably of any given house being destroyed.

And you think planes will be running like normal 😱😂
AND if we go to War, America is right there too?!?!?!

Yes if it’s nuclear war you are going to have it slum it with all those “poor people” and that will be the worst thing that will be happening to you 🙄

PerfectTravelTote · 07/08/2024 22:31

How is America immune from WW3? Do you have a visa for America? Billionaires might have enough money to go wherever they want in the event of a large war but your house deposit isn't going to do the trick, especially if Stirling falls or there's a run on the bank.

At any given point in time there are wars going on somewhere in the world. Now is no different.

LostTheMarble · 07/08/2024 22:32

America? You’ve not thought this through. Nuclear war means heading as far north or south as you can. Extremely remote - maybe Greenland. Makes me worry for your zombie apocalypse plan op, not very prepared at at…

Do you think maybe there’s a teeny weeny chance that your siblings are winding you up?
