To not want to buy property for fear of WW3?

Hi all,

I’m finally getting to a stage where I’ve saved enough for a house deposit, earn well in a remote finance job and am willing to leave London to go to South Yorkshire and buy a house.

Then a niggling thought in my mind says, if your house is destroyed in WW3, all your savings will go down the drain and you will be left destitute.

I appreciate that it’s a crazy thought to have but Iran and Israel are at each other’s throats and Russia has no intention of backing out of Ukraine. When people had their cities bombed in the past, how did they survive?

Tell me if I’m being unreasonable? If so, why?

This isn't meant to be harsh, but have you considered counselling?

There's something eating you away in the back of your brain and it's finding it's expression here.

Buy your house and dare the drones to do their worst. You're actually all set for a lovely life. If WW3 comes to pass, you'll be able to say you told us so - and that is priceless.

Bear in mind that money these days has no intrinsic value, if the central bank or currency you have goes pear shaped due to war the notes, coins or figures on a spreadsheet will have no value.

To be sure you would need to change your money to gold or jewels now, which can be traded anywhere.

There must be some old ROC posts for sale in South Yorkshire, usually run about £30K, resistant to all but a direct strike, one bedroom, one desk, two bunk beds and a chemical lavvy.

Here's one in cumbria, sadly sold STC, only £15K

Check out this Land for sale on Rightmove

Land for sale in ROC Nuclear Bunker, Land to the North East of Dent Station, Sedbergh, Cumbria LA10 5RF, LA10 for £15,000. Marketed by SDL Property Auctions, Nationwide

Is this really how people are thinking?!

DaisyFloop · 07/08/2024 23:08

In a WORLD War, you would leave South Yorkshire for America?! 😂 sorry but that had me laughing

tara66 · 07/08/2024 23:08

Leaving your savings in a bank may be less safe than buying a house as banks are likely to crash in the event of WW3 and your money will be gone. So you won't have either house or money.

ElizabethCage · 07/08/2024 23:10

Apparently if there's a nuclear attack one of the safest places to be is Skegness and I still wouldn't move back there! Move somewhere you'll be happy and get a therapist.

MrsMop1964 · 07/08/2024 23:12

Has someone been watching Threads? It was South Yorkshire (Sheffield) that got nuked .

Of course I know that, I meant a state in America that specifically doesn’t have these things 😊👍

How will you get there OP?

Ww3 will be tech based I'm sure so you won't be able to book a flight online for a start! Whatever happens US will be in the thick of it. Your savings in the bank will be inaccessible as systems will fail. The best position you could be in is owning your own place and growing some food.

You know of course this is all ridiculous and you should just do what makes you happy now, assuming no apocalypse.

suburberphobe · 07/08/2024 23:13

Build up a liquid fund as well

No idea what that means...... visions of a well-stocked drinks cabinet. 😅

CiaDinnerout · 07/08/2024 23:14

@Vizella u are being unreasonable, due to history always haveing different fears during different eras, the tech advances but people are the same

You've never been to America have you

I think the question is, what will happen if WW3 doesn't start. You keep on renting, house prices rise over time, the value of your savings is nibbled away by inflation and in 20 years time where will you be?

We tend to consider the risk of taking an action while failing to recognise the risk of inaction.

An excellent reply.

Mittye · 07/08/2024 23:15

Gold, guns, knives, food/water and the ability to use them/fight would be your only essential items. You would be better being crushed by your house falling on top of you.

This!

Leeds is also a likely target because it's a financial hub.

As someone else pointed out, Skegness is a bit safer, or the very North of Scotland.

OlympicsFanGirl · 07/08/2024 23:18

You need to call your GP.

And a financial advisor.

Education79 · 07/08/2024 23:18

We have a neighbour down the road from our farm who is prepping for armageddon, they have half a garage full of tins and bottles and have made plywood shutters for the windows (not sure how much use that will be) and have sand bags in their shed.

My wife said should we get some stuff in, I said no point, they have all the stuff already, but we have a shotgun and they don't😁

Lovingsummers · 07/08/2024 23:19

I would choose to buy my house, enjoy my garden and the local area and live my best life. If the worst happened, I've enjoyed my time rather than doing nothing out of fear.

Coffeeandgranola · 07/08/2024 23:19

So I can totally relate to your thought process here OP. I went through years of catastrophing so many global events and panicking myself into all kinds of thoughts and actions that were so disproportionate. Later on in life I went for therapy for some seemingly unrelated issues that turned into a whole can of worms, and found that working through those knots relaxed my whole mind. I wonder if there is something underlying that you could get professional help to unpick here?

NamelessNancy · 07/08/2024 23:21

Dinosweetpea · 07/08/2024 22:25

Yeah because America definitely won't be involved in any war and they definitely don't have earthquakes, hurricanes or tornadoes 🙄 Safest place on earth...

Edited

And they'll definitely ok a visa for the OP to rock up for an indefinite amount of time.

Itiswhatitis80 · 07/08/2024 23:22

Hardly any houses got bombed in South Yorkshire in world war 1-2.

AffIt · 07/08/2024 23:22

I've just bought a house a mile away from a major nuclear Naval base.

If and when the red button is pushed, I won't know a thing about it. I'd rather be a shadow on the ground than try to survive a nuclear winter.😀

This!

Plus WW3 will leave international airtravel and foreign currency exchange completely unscathed and operating totally normally.

DBD1975 · 07/08/2024 23:28

Sorry to add to the issue but I don't think household insurance would cover you in the event of WW3 and if it did can you imagine how long you would have to wait to get your claim paid?

waterproofed · 07/08/2024 23:29

Have you considered counselling for your anxiety?

Port1aCastis · 07/08/2024 23:30

Have you been watching Where the Wind Blows?

Just buy a property asap OP as WW3 may never happen but your rent and property prices will increase.
